What's the difference between salt and ice melter?

Is it just ice melter is more expensive, but works faster, works at a lower temperature, and safer for pets?

edit:
Salt also does not work (or not effective) at melting ice when it gets below 0? But if you shovel frequently, would salt be more than enough to keep your sidewalks clear?

Princess Auto has mini shovels on sale for $6.99 (here in Kelowna anyways, are their sales chain-wide?), good for tossing in your trunk in case you get stuck.

Earlier in the day, a group of 10 Porsche owners decided to do a trip to Whistler, well, they didn't make it out of Whistler as the popo had them pulled over and was ticketing all of them for not having snow tires. Not sure how they got home.

A bit further up near Pemberton... a Car2Go Smart car in the ditch. :fullofwin:

Salt stops melting ice when temperatures reach below a certain point (10 to 15 degrees below zero). Ice melter works when salt becomes ineffective. - 40 or something ridiculous like that.

The danger with salt is, it will melt shit then the water will refreeze when temperatures drop further. There are all kinds of mixtures out there that do different things. I'm no chemist, so you'll just have to read what's on the package, as far as effectiveness goes. I've always trusted Alaskan Ice Melt, but there are other brands out there. Anyway, that's about all I know. Just answered because nobody else was posting. Where's godwin when you need him, eh?

Hmm, that's a very good point, never thought about that. But I guess as long as temperature here doesn't drop below the salt's effective temp, it should be ok?

This. I got back from a trip to Kelowna this weekend, expecting to wash the car. But once I got home I saw the wheels were black. The roads just outside Merritt looked like someone literally dumped tar on them (only the slow lane though, odd). Had to use the pressure washer to try and get most of it off

Badhobz 12-11-2017 07:12 PM

I just fixed some trim vibration noise on my maz and I can't even go test it out due to this brimy shit they have on the roads

We won't officially be into La Nina until late-January/February, so I'd guess we probably won't be seeing much of the white stuff for at least another several weeks.

Well, to whoever thought of this shit. They should take this crap and pour it on their dicks and let it sit for the whole winter.

:fuckthatshit:

Obsideon 12-12-2017 08:36 PM

Hmm I wonder how much snow we will get and when is the first big dump?
Any predictions?

MG1 12-12-2017 09:01 PM

fliptuner 12-12-2017 09:05 PM

As long as the brine's flowing and the salt is spreading,it's all good.

:awwyeah:

I prefer rock salt. The back of my car has turned from baby blue to gun metal grey and my license plate is obscured. :lol

Oh trust me, my car is the exact same. But the brine they use is far less corrosive, so I'm fine with doing an extra car wash or two every month if it means I have less frame and component rust to worry about.

Rock salt is usually way more corrosive to metal compared to the special formulas some places use. So to each their own, but no thanks

Badhobz 12-13-2017 09:52 AM

Hence the need for winter beaters. My poor poor sportwagen :( she aint pretty no more.
