GT680W great camera

I just received my GT680W last week and it is a great camera. It's very small and great day and night videos. The build quality is much higher than the G1W that I have in my other car and much smaller too.

It does have motion detection parking mode if that is what you're asking but you will need some kind of voltage regulator though.

Looks to have similar if not the same internals as the GT550W which I've been very happy with (at least the specs and menus look very similar). Plus it's newer and cheaper!

debating between the GT680W and this LS650W. Anyone tried this one before? LS650W NT96650 FULL HD 1080P Car Dash Camcorder 6G fixed lens [LS650W] - $66.50

Also, how big does the GT680W sit on the windshield? If you guys can throw up some pics of your setup it would be much appreciated!

only con is the small battery but that wont matter if it's hardwired

Nice, I like this no logo one even better!

I haven't got a chance to install my PMP yet so I haven't tried out the motion detection function. The battery does suck though.

Where's the best place to pick up one of those?

Vulgate 02-02-2014 09:09 PM

For voltage regulator? They are ever available on ebay and amazon Battery Discharge Prevention | Dash Cam Talk

For the GT680W, foxoffer is a good place to buy from. The new RX300 appears to be good too as tests shown RX300 almost equal the GT680W. I would only get that if it was cheaper as the GT680W just looks more high-quality; don't know if it is in actuality thou.

I believe in one of the dashcam threads, they mention magic power or something similar to that from ASR locally and I am sure local sponsors have them as well.

Vulgate 02-02-2014 09:20 PM

Actually for myself, I am skipping the voltage regulator and plan to run the dashcam off a battery pack instead. I am looking at the RAVPower Element 10400mAh (great reviews) and it should $33 from Amazon.com

Running off a battery pack.. That's actually a great idea!

I have a 5500 mAh one lying around somewhere, how long do you think that will last?

Cop pulls over 2 cars, almost gets hit by me(would have changed lanes but that grey civic was in my blind spot).

Ride 02-02-2014 11:52 PM

If u hit that cop I don't think it would've been ur fault as long as u had the video footage of course. That was a pretty dangerous move on the officers part just to kill 2 birds with one stone

One item you have to worry about when incorporating a LiIon USB pack. They are not designed for automotive environment (ie spikes, surges), or being constantly charged. In the end, you will still need a circuit to decide measure the LiIon voltage and the car's operation mode / amperage to decide whether to charge it or not. Since weight is not an issue, NiMH offer a safer chemistry (try explaining your jerry rigged camera battery burst into flames to ICBC), and a charging system which is easier to work with (it is more linear). I suggest use a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/555_timer_IC and turn off the charging circuit for 8AA NiMH batteries after 30 minutes.

Also USB supplies 5V you need to step it up to 9V and half amp for most automotive cameras.

If you decide to go ahead with the LiIon solution do consider to incorporate a backup power source instead of 100% relying on the battery. It would suck if the battery life is shortened and the camera doesn't power up when you need it most.

how fast were you going in that 70 zone? the other two cars didn't seem like they were doing that much faster.

I think I was going about 75, I was behind the bus the entire time on King George, while those two were passing me on my left (i wasn't going over 75 when I passed him, since there was an incline) Maybe the angle of the bus blocked him from hitting me with radar, if he used it at all?

godwin 02-04-2014 12:59 AM

That's with the Sony CMOS.. I am not sure it is worth 2x the price of the one with Samsung CMOS like the one I posted earlier.

Radar resolution ain't that great, police often have trouble with situations like 2 cars abreast.

Chances are the police car had been tailing the 2 cars behind you for a while.

Video shows the cop camping at the intersection a few hundred meters back, unless they slowed down earlier im guessing they were going about 85, which is pretty lame for an empty highway
