I just signed up for Simplii with their up to $200 sign up bonus and will be getting their no AF cashback VISA to complement my other cards. 4% on restaurants (up to $5k/year), 1.5% on gas/groceries (up to $15k/year), and 0.5% on the rest. Seems like a nice free card to just have on the side or to use strictly for restaurants.

Does anyone use the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite?

https://www.scotiabank.com/ca/en/per...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

Cash back card, we got a call today from them trying to sell us a CC because we have our mortgage with them, this card seems to be quite a bit better overall than our current everyday card (Costco MC) as a cash back card

Also a much higher initial limit than our Costco MC even though we have been perfect with them amazing credit we can’t get higher than 15k with the Costco card. $120 a year fee waived first year and also the second card would be waived for us upon signup

I use the Scotiabank Momentum Visa Infinite. I also do my banking with Scotia, so my ultimate package chequing account also covers the annual fee. Good card, and the cashback has been higher than the old MBNA cash back card I used to have.

I'm on it and it's racking up a good chunk of cash back for me - I was previously on the Passport Infinite card which had great travel benefits which became useless circa March 2020 so I switched. Scotia is pretty generous with credit limits - I think I'm somewhere in the 30-40k range no questions asked.

I combine it with a Tangerine World card which lets me pick 3 categories at 2% cash back which covers the stuff the Momentum card doesn't do well - all my restaurant charges go on Tangerine at 2% while the rest goes on the Visa.

So CIBC bought up the costco card last month(or was it August?), any rumours whether if the rebates are gonna change?

Can also consider the CIBC DIVIDEND® VISA INFINITE* CARD. I struggled to pick between the 2 when I changed cards a year ago but ultimately chose cibc.

CIBC Dividends Visa Infinite is a pretty solid card if gas is your priority
4% on gas and groceries

Hondaracer 10-09-2021 07:20 AM

So now looking at it I’m not sure if that card is best for us because we spend so much on restaurants..if that Scotia card had even 2% back on restaurants it would be a slam dunk but now I’m not so sure hmm..

Amex Cobalt then? I'm not an Amex user but I don't seem to see a lot of acceptance of it around here.

I have been using a travel rewards points card for the longest time as every year I travel (pre-covid). Now with Covid, don't really know when travelling will be normal again in my life, which has caused me to consider a cash-back credit card going forward. As I have a mortgage with TD now, looking at opening up with their All-inclusive banking plan (monthly fee waived if min balance maintained) + cashback infinite visa card (annual fee waived by having their all-inclusive banking plan). The credit card is offering 6% for first 3 months on all purchases.

Well the CIBC one has 2% in dining, transportation, and recurring payments then 4% in groceries and gas. You can also link the cibc card with chevron and save 3 cents everytime or 10 cents when you get enough points with their program. Which is roughly every 3rd fill up depending on how much your fills are.

Amex Cobalt user here.

Switched based on a referral from Eff-1 and loving every bit of it. Acceptance has grown tremendously over the years. There are some dick bag cities that suck at adopting Amex (Montreal is one of them) but they've really upped their game in growing acceptance with lower fees for small businesses.

Their app has a list of stores/restaurants you can filter out based on your map location so you know where it's accepted so that helps a lot. I like their travel coverage and it has been competitive against my Visa and Mastercard programs. For those of you who enjoy unique opportunities to wine and dinning offers, Amex does a pretty good job of ensuring exclusivity, but you pay for that via monthly fees etc.

Given your tendency to dine out and ball out, Amex is the way to go. I rarely use Visa or Mastercard anymore. Thank goodness I'm on CERB. :D

Hmm I will have to start taking note as to if the places I frequent accept it or not

I feel like Vancouver generally has a fairly low acceptance of Amex..

Figure out where you you go regularly and see if your preferred vendors accept AMEX or not. Vancouver originally never had the best acceptance rate for AMEX but it has improved significantly. From a business perspective, it would be good to encourage and accept Amex typically because of the clientele it attracts and their specialty in corporate T&E programs.

I been using the Alaska reward card from MBNA… its a pay card, but if you’re a dedicated person you can churn it. In Canada it’s run by MBNA but the Alaska points program is run by Alaska Airlines and they don’t talk to each other, just “linked” by your account numbers.

Therefore you can apply and get the 50k points or whatever the current bonus is, you can do your spending etc for half a year or whatever to get the reward and Mayeb not arouse suspicion too much and then cancel and apply again, tell them you already have an Alaska points program and they’ll connect to it and off you go. Within a year you’ll have a “free” flight+ to Japan or whatever on their partner airlines (JAL is one of them) I think I’m almost up to 3 flights worth of points during Covid.

twitchyzero 10-11-2021 04:23 PM

dunno if this is worth mentioning but i can never get through the mbna's policy phone line to ask if their travel medical covers covid because their booklet doesnt mention it

bcaa does so for an extra $20/trip i get that just in case

68style 10-11-2021 07:30 PM

I think with the Alaska card, because it's pay, it goes through a different customer service line... I always get an answer immediately and they're like bending over backwards nice to me. That alone feels worth the cost lol

I've had an AMEX for about 10 years now, the acceptance has grown over the time I have had it. Most of the new machines that small stores have now accept AMEX. I carry a Visa too just in case my Amex is not accepted.

Rallydrv 10-13-2021 11:21 PM

Amex just increased mem fee on gold card. For now it's $150 with $100 rebate, but goes up to $250 next year. Some more perks tho. In general I travel alot, don't care about lounge, as already have with star alliance. Big issue is I have about 300k points that I will need to transfer to aeroplan or other Amex card if they allow. Guess need to call and find replacement.

Amex hands down has best service, for disputes, insurance etc. And barely any hold time when call. However don't get Amex thru bank, as they don't have rebates, buy local (one month a year), front of the line etc.

twitchyzero 10-14-2021 07:03 AM

unfortunately my free card went from no fee to $90 to $120, but yes they have been adding more perks

Euro7r 11-24-2021 05:10 PM

I just applied for a TD cashback credit card for strictly usage for home expenses for myself/fiancee to keep track of. I currently own BMO/RBC/Amex credit cards and they have always been instant approval in the past when I applied for them. For some reason this time around, TD didn't approve instantly and mentioned they need more time to review my information and should receive a decision in 7 - 10 business days.

I haven't had much dealings in the past with TD besides when I was a kid when I had a student account, which I closed like 15 years ago. Is this normal for TD?
