kev1n9121 05-27-2013 07:25 PM

hey guys was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers on servicing my bike. i try to do the basic maintenance but there are some things i dont want to mess with (i.e. brakes, replacing chains and whatnot). i was wondering how many times you guys bring your bikes into shops for service each riding season? i plan on riding till around october then storing the bike away for the winter season and then bringing it back out again in the spring next year. would it be smart to say bring it into a shop every 3 months just to get it checked out?

Gwilo 05-27-2013 07:56 PM

Not to be snarky but check the owners manual first.

about every 4000 to 6000 km oil change (dyno oil) and every 6 months something has to be done

every two years swingarm pivot bearing - steering bearings - fork oil - transfer case oil - valves per manual

so you split the list up and every year you do half to keep costs down each year

gdoh 05-27-2013 08:00 PM

go by your owners manual. 3 months is all depending on how much you ride, ive had mine out since february and put roughly 8,000 km on it. if you dont ride that much then your bike should be in pretty good shape just keep an eye on the basic stuff like oil, chain, lights, tires and what not

kev1n9121 05-27-2013 08:59 PM

yep i've checked the owners manual and it seems like the next big service is in a couple thousand km's. i've owned the bike for about 2 months so far and put on ~1000km since (i basically ride only when it's dry out)

Gwilo 05-28-2013 06:01 PM

If you are new to riding, pick up a good tire air pressure gauge ( about $ 15.00) and a good tire pump (bicycle type) that way you can check your tire pressure on cold tires every few days.

When looking for the gauge make to look for a style that will work with your bike. I have two bikes and two gauges as they only seem to fit on one bike each :(
