When Apple replaces a phone, they transfer all carrier information from the old phone to the new one. Since Apple themselves host servers that unlock their own phones, your newly replaced phone would also be unlocked.

On a sidenote, I jailbroke my iPhone and phone feels great with a few tweaks!

If I unlock my Rogers iPhone 5 would I be able to use in Asia (Manila and Japan)?

Are there any like band specific things I need to worry about? When I take a look at the Apple website it has the different models listed and what countries they work in. Each country I'll be in is listed in different sections.

Apple - iPhone 5 - View countries with supported LTE networks.

Or is this just for LTE? 3G etc will work just fine?

3G should be fine, if you have a AWS capable iphone 5 you have more choices.

You should be able to get 3G. My girlfriend has her iPhone 5 from Korea and she has 3G bands. I believe most of Asia shares similar bands as well. IIRC, Apple also marketed the iPhone as a global phone?

Marketing is quite different from reality. Reality to support different bands, each band needs an antenna, you only have so much space on the phone.

Also just saying it is a global phone, but geographically it might be limited to certain providers for various reasons. Great example is China unicom or TMobile US before the AWS versions.

Having said that, I think a iPhone 5 should be fine as long as it has been unlocked by Rogers. It looks like Philippines and Japan both use the 2100mhz band.

Its global in that you will get 3G service, but you may not get the full LTE service. The 5C or 5S on the other hand will get full LTE service as it supports all the LTE bands and 3G bands.

Stupid question... I'm about to sell a couple iPhones on eBay, is it worthwhile/safe to post the IMEI in the listing or is that just dumb and asking for trouble?

MTV Cribs 01-05-2014 04:14 AM

I recently saw it on the news where scammers are cloning phones with legit imei numbers now. The even go to stores and take pictures of the imei number on the box.

Why eBay? Just do local on CL and get cash. And I'd never post the IMEI or serial number online. That's just asking for trouble.

Was going to do both, will hit up CL first. What are decent prices for the following?

Iphone 5 32gb black unlocked by carrier 8/10 (minor wear marks, no dents or scratches)

Iphone 5 32gb white unlocked by carrier 6/10 (couple dents on corners, no cracks or scratches, works 100%)

search craigs for some prices and average them out to your liking

godwin 01-05-2014 06:29 PM

Also it depends if they phones are locked or unlocked.. because Apple has locked down their iPhone database.. and DMCA. There have been a huge increase for unlocked phones. It costs something ridiculous like $150 to unlock an off contract iPhone in the States. If your phones are on contract and have been unlocked, they can fetch a premium.

If your phone is unlocked it is worth selling it on eBay.

Just cracked my iPhone 5 screen. Cheaper to get it fixed at one of the repair stores or thru apple?

can anyone comment on the ios7 jailbreak? is it worth it? what are some cool things that you did with the jailbreak that has enhanced the iOS experience?

tomatogunk 01-07-2014 03:02 PM

nothing really. iOS 7 adopted a lot of features that were once jailbreak-exclusive. The only reason why I jailbroke my iDevice is to have Flux run on it.

Where is the cheapest place to unlock an iPhone5? Thanks.

Does the Apple store unlock the iPhones when you have surpassed the waiting period?

curious too. I jailbroke my iPad after no jailbreaking since iOS 6. I couldn't find any jailbreak stuff worth having on it lol. beside the obvious, extra way to load ipa onto the phone:ilied:

The carrier does the unlock on apples activation servers and all you do is restore the phone through iTunes. Once complete you will get message saying that your iphone has been unlocked.

The carrier that sold you the phone, ie Rogers bell Telus fido.

This will be a no BS permanent unlock, won't go away after an ios update like the software unlocks. Usually costs $50-90 depending on the carrier.
