seeing if you guys know why this is message is showing up
something like "this iTunes cannot connect to the phone"

some background info
Iphone 5S originally sync'd to a PC, now trying to connect to mac. Using an aftermarket cable. ITunes is up to date.

gonna be trying the original cable tomorrow, but I'm just wondering if someone knows if it's a different problem.

Why go with them when the carrier unlock is cheaper and 100% legit?

I guess you did not want to wait the 90 days to unlock for $50 from your carrier?

I find the aftermarket cables to be a little finicky

So I've had my 5 since the week of release. Have around $200 left on a hardware buyout

Would Rogers unlock my phone for free if I give them some BS about euro SIM cards etc for travelling?

I doubt it, will charge a fee, $50?

Depends on how long you have been out of warranty. Apple is usually... if its a month.. they'll prob just swap it for you

I got an iPhone 5 for my mom, and she's coming from a 3GS.

Is there any app/program that I can use to transfer the SMS/text from the 3GS to the 5?
I know you can do a backup and restore with iTunes, but it doesn't let you selectively restore SMS/text. I want to do a fresh restore and just transfer the SMS/text over, nothing else (settings, app data, etc.)

Iceman_2K 02-05-2014 10:29 AM

From what i've experienced, if you do a restore from backup, its all or nothing...

trd2343 02-05-2014 10:37 AM

^Yea, that's why I am wondering if any 3rd party app or program that can do that

You can jailbreak both phones and extract the text message database file from one phone and put it in the other. But if you're not jailbroken, then the easiest way to do it is just delete everything (apps, emails, contacts, etc.) except the text message on the 3GS and then back it up in iTunes. After that restore from a backup on the iPhone 5. That way very little will get restored from a backup.

Haven't really been in the loop for iPhone related stuff but is it still worth it to get a 5S or would a 5/5c be good enough?

Currently using a Nexus5 and need to replace it with something else since my screen cracked and thinking of getting an iPhone.

I currently use a 5 and I used a 5s for a bit. Honestly speaking I don't notice the speed difference of the 5s as ios7 and games aren't really that intense just yet. The 5c is really nice to hold, so I would probably get that if I had to get a new phone as the 5 isn't available anymore. If you wouldn't mind something used (just beware of stolen devices) there's quite a bit of iPhone 5 for sale with some great pricing.

Don't get a 5 or 5C. The difference in price isn't that much and the 5S is far more future-proof than the 5 or 5C.

skholla 03-16-2014 10:37 AM

5S will have a longer supported life span, also will run ios 8 better. Big difference in camera between the 5 and 5S, also the Touch ID is really convenient.

Although I agree with the fact that 5s will last you longer i have to disagree with the camera. owning both the 5 camera is already excellent. The times I notice the 5s camera advantages is night shots with flash due to the dual tone flash and also when taking night shots with out flash it is a bit more clear.

The Touch ID is convenient if you use it, I have my phone lock at 15 minutes so I never really use the lock code so either way its very similar.

Apple has determined that the sleep/wake button mechanism on a small percentage of iPhone 5 models may stop working or work intermittently. iPhone 5 models manufactured through March 2013 may be affected by this issue.

Apple will replace the sleep/wake button mechanism, free of charge, on iPhone 5 models that exhibit this issue and have a qualifying serial number.

As of April 25, 2014, the replacement process will be available in the U.S. and Canada. In other countries, it will be available as of May 2, 2014.

Don't get the iphone 5c. Is exactly the iphone 5 expect is put into a plastic case. If you must try to get your hands on the iphone5.

Honestly though I would wait till the iphone6 comes out. Only a few more months and for sure the screen will be bigger and with better upgrades.

godwin 04-26-2014 01:44 PM

Wait a bit and get 5s on a discount (there had been one before Easter already), though you probably have to be on the ball if you wait until iphone6 comes out.. Apple are really good at keeping previous model stock low.

Personally I would only get 5s if I can get it on a discount, since the 64bit and touchID are new. It is always better to get new technology when they are on the 2nd or 3rd revision. You will get a new phone in 3 - 4 years anyways.

As for the 5c, I am actually surprised the maturity of it. If you need an iPhone right away without any discounts, I recommend that. In my household, we made the transition to all lightning connections including the family mobile, no one is complaining either 5c or 5s' performance. In the end, the less pixels of the iphone 5 series don't tax the CPU and battery power as much as an ipad would.

As for the whole Android and Apple argument, it really depends who do you entrust your personal data with. Someone who gives it to you for free? or someone who have an incentive to keep you happy to keep buying their hardware. If you use Windows at home then Android will probably serve you better, since the magic of Apple is you do have to buy into the whole eco system.

question for you guys.

i lost my black 64GB iphone 5, but thankfully i bought rogers' replacement policy (lost, stolen, broken insurance) which has a deductible of $179. when i go through this policy to get a replacement, do you think they will send me a 5S since the 5 is discontinued?

You'll most likely get a refurbished iPhone 5.

DanHibiki 05-27-2014 10:43 AM

So I cracked my iPhone 5 screen awhile back and got it replace by a 3rd party store in crystal mall.

I stupidly cracked part of it again and on top of that my audio receiver doesn't seem to be as loud as before.

I want to take it into apple store and have it replaced for $269.

Has anyone had experience with this situation before? Would they be able to tell it was replaced by a 3rd party and do they have guys look at it in the back first?

corollagtSr5 05-27-2014 10:55 AM

I'm sure if your paying apple $269 to fix it, they aren't going to care if it's been repaired before.

But that is indeed their official policy
