The Vancouver Canucks have a new general manager, as former Bruins assistant Jim Benning has agreed to a multi-year deal to join the team's front office.

Benning, a former Canucks defenceman who spent nine seasons in the NHL with Vancouver and the Toronto Maple Leafs, was an assistant with the Bruins since 2006. Following his playing career that ended in 1990, he worked as a scout for the Anaheim Ducks and the Buffalo Sabres before a six-year run as the Sabres' Director of Amateur Scouting starting in 1998.

Benning won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011.

Newly-appointed team president Trevor Linden parted ways with former general manager Mike Gillis last month and fired head coach John Tortorella in early May.

surely Benning will sign an overrated, washed up, mediocre goaltender who only had one good season in his prime, and has not won a playoff series since 2007, yeah you know totally going against Linden's "re-tooling" and getting "younger" philosophy, over a young and upcoming Lack who's handled himself decently after being handed the #1.

not to mention he's looking for a retirement contract which means term + $$$ and he still wants to be a #1, but he will give some of that up and split playing time if he signs with a legit contender which we are not

he was also a cancer to his team and whining the whole season until he was traded.

logic not even once

inb4 i was trolling
inb4 i wasn't even being srs
etc.

murd0c 05-21-2014 09:58 AM

Benning will trade fro Malcom Subban and then will trade for the rights of PK and we will have all 3 bros here :troll:

NHL Rumours: Miller's new connection to Canucks - Sportsnet.ca

Quote:

May 21. Now that it's official that the Ryan Miller era in St. Louis is over, speculation has begun swirling as to where the most valuable free agent on the goaltending market will land.

Mike Liut, Miller's agent, spoke with News 1130 Wednesday and said that Miller will target a Stanley Cup contender, which only further cements the Anaheim Ducks as a strong candidate here.

Miller's wife, Noureen DeWulf, is an actress who probably wouldn't mind a move to California, and the L.A. Kings are set in net.

All signs point to Anaheim letting pending UFA Jonas Hiller drift to the open market. Although Frederik Andersen (age 24) and John Gibson (20) are both talented, they're young. Bringing in a pricy but proven veteran in Miller could be the way to go, and it doesn't hurt that Miller's value likley dipped with his 2014 playoff performance.

Many believe the San Jose Sharks to be a possibility, which makes a ton of sense with Antti Niemi's status as a sure No. 1 in question. (Niemi is signed through 2014-15 with a $3.8 million cap hit.) But Sharks beat writer David Pollak is doubtful that Miller is on the Sharks' radar.

"I’ll agree that he might be if the Sharks were in their usual mode, looking for that one last puzzle piece to get them over the hump," Pollak writes. "But Wilson has said that is not where the team is this off-season. That this is the year the Sharks may have to take one step back to eventually move two steps forward. And hard to see their interest in Miller (or his interest in them as far as that goes) because of that."

What other contenders need a goalie? Pittsburgh, perhaps, if the Penguins' new GM decides to move Marc-Andre Fleury.

And Liut won't rule out the Vancouver Canucks, considering expected new GM Jim Benning has ties to Miller.

Benning was the director of amateur scouting for the Buffalo Sabres when the team selected Miller in the fifth round of the 1999 entry draft.

Liut is also eager to speak with Benning about David Booth's future as a Canuck. The forward has been the subject of buyout rumours:

don't think so, Miller is barely an upgrade if any on Niemi and will be 4 years older + more than likely get paid more than 3.8 mil. Their GM has also publicly stated he expects Stalock to battle for the #1 job and he will likely be making around 1.0-1.2 mil per. Their biggest problem is Left handed D especially when Vlasic went down my god it was terrifying with Stuart-Irwin-Hannan for those final 3 games were dreadful to watch trying to get out of the zone.

Shitty pass.....lol

FS1992EG 05-21-2014 05:41 PM

Anyone know why Montreal plays a rookie in the Eastern Finals instead of Peter Budaj?

dbaz 05-21-2014 06:07 PM

Cuz it's budaj. Plus rookie has proven himself in big games at every level so far
