We're reasonably close to Vegas... only 2,000kms or so!

whitev70r 06-14-2023 03:55 PM

Seattle wins Cup before Canucks ... :ahwow:

teggy604 06-15-2023 07:28 AM

Vegas won the Cup with a depth of forwards and arguably the deepest 6 defencemen in the NHL.

I remember Bieksa complimenting Vegas on their defensive depth.

Pietrangelo, Zach Whitecloud, Shea Theodore, McNabb, Martinez, and Hague.

Then you add some players who were overlooked. Marchesseault was undrafted out of junior hockey.

The only star players on this team are Eichel and William Karlsson.

Eichel asked to be traded from the Sabres after disagreeing with the Sabres medical team about having fusion surgery on his neck, instead of a disc replacement. Eichel chose to have disc replacement.

You have a bunch of forwards, that for various reasons other teams did not want on their team, and yet have talent and mental toughness to become better players for Vegas.

Players who played with a chip on their shoulder.

Their captain Mark Stone went into beast mode in the Finals, and especially game 5.

The Vegas GM also made a good trade in acquiring goalie Aiden Hill.

Eichel wins a Stanley Cup before McDavid hahaha. Both players were drafted no. 1 and no. 2 in the 2015 draft.

68style 06-15-2023 08:06 AM

... William Karlson is NOT a star player.

Stone and Pietrangelo are way bigger stars than Karlson will ever be and Pietrangelo has slipped significantly the last few years.

pastarocket 06-15-2023 08:18 AM

Vegas' defensive depth is the main reason that they beat the Panthers.

This team is well coached and very disciplined on defence.

I cannot remember any time that the Panthers had any sustained pressure in the offensive zone during the Finals when both teams played 5 on 5.

Golden Knights' defence is big, physical, and fast. They move the puck out of their zone quickly. Remove any gaps in open ice quickly between their players and Florida's forwards. They have defencemen who can skate well and can make the quick first pass to their forwards. Vegas also has big defencemen who can punish opponents with their physical play.

You compare the Vegas top 6 defencemen with our Canucks defence to see a big difference in calibre between a championship team and lottery pick team.

Like I said before, Bieksa complimented Vegas on their defensive depth.

Vegas' biggest weakness is their penalty killing. 77 percent on the PK during the regular season. Their PK during the playoffs was not that good either.

Their defence in terms of 5 on 5 play is stellar though.

teggy604 06-15-2023 09:26 AM

hey don't forget Mikko Rantanen. He won the cup with Avs before Jack, and Connor. And he was pick #10 lol.

But I agree defense wins cups. "unlike scoring defense never quits" a little quote from Mighty Ducks 3 Coach Orion lol.

Finally! It is about time that the Canucks, and Aquilini, open up their wallets to buy out OEL to create salary cap room.

This is what would happen under a buyout scenario for the team:

Ekman-Larsson has four years and $29 million remaining on an eight-year, $66 million contract he originally signed with the Arizona Coyotes in July 2018. He was traded in a blockbuster deal to Vancouver in July 2021 with Arizona retaining 12 per cent of his salary.

According to PuckPedia, the buyout will allow the Canucks to save $7.1 million against the cap this upcoming season. However, it will now keep a portion of the contract for the next eight seasons.

I was a big fan of doing this even in the middle of last season and I hope to god they follow through. Not only is he fucking up our salary cap, causing us to lose other good players and wasting a spot on our roster... he's also preventing the development of other players and prospects. Best thing that happened during last season was him getting hurt to show it for real. It's super super worth it, I think we eat like 2.5 mill in cap space every year for 8 years after... but it's fucking worth it. Overall they also save salary dollars. Here's the details:

OLIVER EKMAN-LARSSON BUYOUT RESULTS
A Oliver Ekman-Larsson buyout spans 8 years, has a cost of $19,333,333 and savings of $9,666,667. Ekman-Larsson is 31 years of age at the time of the buyout; therefore, the buyout ratio is 2/3. With $29,000,000 in salary remaining, the cost is $19,333,333, and the savings are $9,666,667. Buyouts span twice the length of the remaining years and because there are 4 years remaining in the contract, the buyout length is 8 years. The buyout cap hit is displayed in the Cap Hit Calculations table below.

This contract was involved in a retained salary transaction. The resulting costs and cap hit are therefore split between each team based on the percentage of salary retained by the respective teams.
Arizona Coyotes: 12%

Buyout cap hit for 8 years will be $2.417M

Just another fuck you from Dim Jim

whitev70r 06-16-2023 01:03 PM

Damn ...paying for Benning's worst trade! OEL thanks Allvin as well, now he can retire like a king.

Razor Ramon HG 06-16-2023 01:09 PM

2023-24: $146, 667

24: $2,346, 667

25: $4,766,667

26: $4,766,667

27: $2,126,667

28: $2,126,667

29: $2,126,667

30: $2,126,667

The cap hit in 25/26 is gonna suck.

Hondaracer 06-16-2023 01:15 PM

Can hate Aqualini all ya want, can’t say the guy doesn’t spend the money required though

If I was him I’d be calling every team making sure Dim Jim never got hired again lol fuck

bobbinka 06-16-2023 01:20 PM

Ah yes, making room for Connor Bedard

68style 06-16-2023 01:36 PM

.. or Pettersson?

I'm so happy about this honestly.

When Alvin was walking around at year end saying buy-outs weren't an option I was like fuckity fuck fucks!!!

winson604 06-16-2023 03:00 PM

Now the Loui E contract officially extends into 3 different decades if you look at the trade tree lol

murd0c 06-16-2023 03:06 PM

We needed cap space and now we have it, love it or hate the buy out it had to be done. At least it gives the Canucks a lot more room to do what they want and I'm very curious what trades Allvin will have in store in the nest week and a half.

The best part is is screw's the Coyotes out of a buy out spot for the next 8 years now LOL

highfive 06-16-2023 04:32 PM

Coyotes loses 1/3 retaining salary spot not buy out.

I've always said the same thing. He's not afraid to throw money at the players

MarkyMark 06-16-2023 06:45 PM

Yeah he's not cheap, unfortunately with a hard cap and lots of teams willing to spend to that cap you're only as good as the people you put in charge and not handcuffing yourself with garbage contracts.

spoon.ek9 06-16-2023 08:28 PM

shelling out the money hasn't been the issue. it's the meddling with decisions made within the club to try and move past the 2011 era that have burned this club for the last decade.

we'll see what management does next here because i swear to god, if they fill up this new cap space with another boneheaded contract i'm going to be pissed. lots of work to be done especially with Bear out until approximately December. our lack of depth in defense is still a glaring issue.

rumours persist that garland, boeser and myers are being shopped.

Razor Ramon HG 06-16-2023 08:50 PM

I feel like we're going to move some assets around and overpay for Matt Dumba, lol

Hondaracer 06-16-2023 11:08 PM

Wonder if OEL retires

68style 06-17-2023 12:06 AM

Fuck I hope so, he was an absolute embarrassment last season.
