Anyone imported a JDM LHD convertible before? Any tips or places I should start?

Having my mid life crisis and thinking of a convertible to drive around on the weekend while rocking my khakis and new balance 996's.

Badhobz 08-19-2025 04:08 PM

There’s some importers around here. Specialize in jdm stuff but after taxes and duties I don’t think it’s worth it. Especially if it’s a 996 convertible. Those should be cheap as hell

LOL you see 996 and immediately think Porsche.

He was talking about 996 New Balance shoes! :lol

bcrdukes 08-19-2025 04:35 PM

lol i have the same problem
I see magazines that mention 996, and immediately I think Porsche, but then I realize, oops, they're talking about New Balance shoes. :D

Beat me to it, my tip would also be, 'Don't do it'. For your midlife crisis, you deserve least amount of headache as possible. bcedhk, what are you looking for where a jdm import is preferable to finding one here?

Beforward : self serve site, lots of stock always moving. Would need to find a local paperwork guy, or do it yourself, from what i remember its not worth the 300$ or whatever.

Mark at braveauto : dont know if he is still around, try searching the site, i used him twice, to try and buy an nsx and s2000 years ago, great service, never actually won a car tho (my cheap ass always got outbid)
Full refund for deposit both times.
Full service from japan onto the ship.

Could try looking on pistonheads as well - uk site
Buy a noble m12 POGGERS

Feel free to messg me if you need opinions on stuff

Inquiring minds would like to know why on the "Don't do it" part. :considered:

Badhobz 08-19-2025 08:18 PM

cuz if its LHD you can basically get it here. the only JDM LHD cars are bmw's and other euro trash that you can pretty much get here.

It MIGHT be cheaper, but it also might come with HUGE headaches with unknown history, not properly inspected, weird regional mechanical changes that might have specalized parts associated with that shit, etc etc.

Like if you want a JDM z4, why even bother? how about a JDM 997? same shit... its all going to be euro crap and you add convertible to that mix and youre just asking for convertible top failures. When's the last time you saw a z4 around here? or even a 996/997 convertible? or SL/SLK that's 15 years old?

$$$$ down the toilet.

whitev70r 08-19-2025 08:30 PM

Yah, my worry would be the compatibility of parts that are unique to Euro vs. NA. You'd think it is direct interchangeable but I don't think everything is. That would mean importing part = more time in the shop than usual, and finding a good JDM mech. Not worth the extra effort for a mid life crisis. A midlife crisis honestly should be something that has 2 wheels and >600cc.

Midlife crisis should be wasted on getting into hardcore body building / marathon / high end bicycle riding, AND chasing girls half your age.

Don't waste it on a JDM car.

(If you really insist on doing some JDM stuff, relocate to Japan and start dating Japanese girls!) :fuckyea:

Everything I've ever looked at importing was cheaper, lower mileage, and in better shape than the LHD ones for sale here, but I haven't looked at Euros. If you search enough you might find one that was an NA or EU car that was imported to Japan privately and avoid any hidden JDM quirks.

Thanks!

I'm open books right now when it comes to which car, but i think it's mainly either 996s, Cayman, Boxster or SLK? I've been browsing at FB Marketplace from time to time, and I do notice several 996's, Cayman or Audi TT's (almost most TT seem to be RHD) that were brought over from Japan. Hence, I figured maybe I could do it myself to save more money since my partner is fluent in Japanese.

bcrdukes 08-20-2025 07:59 AM

What is the price difference between a local 996/Boxster/SLK compared to the JDM import?

Are you looking for the thrill of importing to scratch the itch + mid-life crisis? Trying to understand the thought process so we don't steer you in the wrong direction.

There's a guy in my MBA cohort who imports JDM Toyotas for his personal use. He's got an older Alphard that he shares with his wife and recently got another JDM Toyota for his daughter, but his purposes are more utilitarian than anything. That, and he drives them to the ground until they don't make sense to be repaired anymore. For him, it was a matter of cost savings as oppoesd to getting a fun car. Let's be real. None of us dream of owning a late-90s Alphard to be cool (unless you are Badhobz.)

Badhobz 08-20-2025 08:05 AM

ITS COOL! FUCK YOU DUKES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bcrdukes 08-20-2025 08:05 AM

I only name dropped you because you are rich enough to do this for the purposes of trolling. :D

Badhobz 08-20-2025 08:10 AM

Im trying to drive my little spy balloon around like she's a big boss in a TVB drama. They always seem to sit in the 2nd row of alphards...

Ill be the non-descript, non-verbal driver (although ill probably mutter profanities in Cantonese while driving, just to make it authentic)

I'm no expert, but I've been seeing 996's (2001-2005) ranging in the high 20's to mid 30's. Most are usually 100k+. Ironically, 2 of the 5 i browsed were also imported from Japan.

There's some JDM examples for < 30k with <100k km.
