Your use case is different, and you'd be much better served by a Cayman.

I'm mid-life, I have kids and I totally understand the whole need to buy a convertible. Don't buy a motorcycle - your kids don't need to see their father end up in a body bag or suffer from a life-changing injury. Buy a 4-seater convertible so you can take your kids for rides.

As some here know, I bought an E46 convertible a few years ago during COVID. It was a neglected example and it's automatic. But, I can at least work on it during my spare time and the parts network is very strong with numerous OEMs who still make parts, unlike Porsche. BMW still makes parts for the car and even their parts are not unreasonable. Don't overlook peak-era BMWs - E46, Z3/Z4, and even a 1-series convertible with the N52.

Another tip - get in the habit of putting on SPF50 (if it's not already part of your skincare regimen) to keep the freckles and sunspots at bay. You'll need it once you get used to driving with the top down.

As fun as the E88 is with the N52, I miss driving a Miata. At some point, I'll probably make the hop back to Miata life and leave the bimmer behind. Maybe once the kiddo is old enough to stay home by himself. Haven't thought through what the criteria is yet.

Wouldn't it be worth more running than not?

It highly depends on the kid. If your kid is going to stick with you and go everywhere you go like mine is trending, you'll be shut out of the Miata life.

It's extremely tempting for me to go buy a ND, but damn if it's hard with two kids and it'll just be a 5 figure lawn ornament if I did.

yray 08-25-2025 08:05 AM

https://www.richmondvw.ca/used/2015-...d12402254.html

are they that desperate to sell this :lol

Badhobz 08-25-2025 09:59 AM

But it says it has mechanical issues. Still surprised it has 237,000kms on it. Whoever owned it, totally got their moneys worth.

Ugh... I have definitely "hustled" on Hwy 3 on my way to Area 27 as well, so I kind of feel bad for the guy. But generally speaking, speeding anywhere close to towns is almost always a bad idea...

3 places I've been ticketed where the RCMP are seen often and you should never speed:

-Princeton (always lurking)
-Merritt (always lurking)
-Keremeos (to a lesser degree, but still got me one time)

EvoFire 08-26-2025 04:41 PM

I think typically around town is going to be high risk. Highway 1 going through Kamloops and hwy97 going through West Kelowna are known to be heavy ticket spots

Dunno where else to post this, so I guess it fits this thread's criteria.

I was recently in Iceland which meant we had to rent some cars to drive around in. Now, me being an oldschool car guy who is still driving a '90 civic Si and a '98 civic, I have very little exposure to the newest cars and all the recent technology (read: past 10-15 years worth of "normal" features in cars these days). I usually laugh to myself when I open up my sunroof in the EF and say "oooh technology!" :lol

The two cars I was given to drive were a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and a Mitsubishi Outlander (dunno what years but pretty new-ish). Holy FUCK was this an annoying ass experience, NO exaggeration. The god damn car dings you when you're TWO WHOLE FUCKING KM/HR over the speed limit?! fuck off! And then this collision prevention bullshit when you're (barely) close to another vehicle, hitting the brakes for you because oh dear me, you're a wee bit too close teehee. The Outlander was even MORE annoying. Yawn? Fatigue warning "time for a break?" how about fuck you? Look at the radio, steering wheel vibrates "DiStRacTeD dRiviNg!!1 oMg!!!". Even through construction the damn collision prevention kicks in because it thinks you're crossing the line into other traffic/the shoulder. Please dear whatever the fuck god everyone prays to, tell me these features can be DISABLED....??? Otherwise I'll never buy a new car ever again unless this shit is not part of the car.

I did all the driving while we were there and holy fucking shit was I annoyed. I fucking hate that new cars these days automatically assume you're a retarded driver who needs all of these support systems in order to drive safely. Back up cameras make people idiots at parking but all of this shit I just described.... no wonder there's so many idiots in new cars. Fuck.

Traum 08-26-2025 08:00 PM

I don't have any experience in either of the cars you mentioned, but I would guess that they might be European-specific features?

If stuff like this were to be found on US cars, I'm sure our southern neighbours would be flipping out big time, and Trump might even slap a tariff on all cars having these features.

(Oh wait... Trump is already slapping tariffs on cars made outside of the US... )

wtf did they set all of the assist to max annoyance?

i rip it in that gen RAV4 through NYC/Toronto, have never set that thing off even with a very aggressive following distance/running yellows.

the dings for the speed thing have to get turned off but NZ/Aus are SUPER strict with speeding so might be a god thing

Gumby 08-26-2025 09:38 PM

If you can’t adjust the sensitivity of those driving aid tools and/or disable them completely, then that is a poorly designed car…

Our work trucks come with the retard lamps on the side view mirrors (red indicator for when theres a car in your blind spot)

I bought 4$ fish eyes and slapped them overtop lol

4$ Fisheye > 1800$ blind spot detection system

Also: on topic of licencing.... GS8 mentioned the govt is getting rid of the 2nd test for your class 5 licence.
Yup its true.

what the fuck

The govt should be adding an annual exam for all drivers, not taking tests away. Make it online, make it VR, do something to reduce traffic and accidents.

Increase distracted driving tickets to automatic impound.
Doing your eye lashed on way to work? Impound.
Checking RS real estate thread on your way home at a red light? Impound. you know who you are

God dam it canada why you so soft

Anyone else also think about what the real cost of an accident is?
Dude rear ends someone by texting on highway
> Fire truck blocks off 2-3 lanes like usual for 1hr
> Tow truck finally shows up
> 10,000 20,000, 30,000? Cars stuck in traffic for an hour.
> How much fuel is burned by those cars?
> How many businesses have missed appointments and deliveries?
> How many people bill the customer / client for travel time?
> The trickle down effect, how deep does the rabbit hole go

Il see myself out

Mandatory driver exams for people at 70years old then every 5 years after.
Ticket for dumbasses who dont turn on their headlights in rain/dark

Manic! 08-27-2025 08:32 AM

That's 293.5 mp/h. The car has 2959 HP. Being electric you can add another 25% to 50% when comparing to a gad car because of instant torque.

But the "retard lamps" only turn on/off, they don't make any noise or worse - prevent you from changing lanes...

ICBC probably doesn't have enough resources to implement that. There are long wait times for a road test as it is.

whitev70r 08-27-2025 10:21 AM

^ just make that 1st road test a bit harder (higher failure rate = more fees) including ramps on hwy and off hwy. I understand the 1st road test doesn't include that now. The only difference for the 2nd one is exactly that ... hwy entrance on and off.

You arent wrong

Id happily pay 1% more in taxes, to reduce my drive time by 10 minutes per day. (1% goes to more licensing and traffic prevention programs)

Buuuuuuttt that will never happen, maybe when the sky turns orange
