Hamilton's latest watch is from the new Indiana Jones currently bombing at the box office

https://i.imgur.com/lT8PcTP.png

https://i.imgur.com/WJjwOyM.png

It's basically a 2020's homage to a 1980's homage to a 1940's watch with 80's quartz technology, and updated to more acceptable modern sizing... $700 MSRP is kind of insane but AD's will be about $100 less and grey market even less.

trollface 07-02-2023 08:18 PM

You gotta be at least 65 to wear that

I guess after they made the Murph for Interstellar, and a few for Tenet, they're in the movie watch game.

Badhobz 07-04-2023 09:24 AM

MURPH!!!!!!!!!!

Hamilton has a long history of movie tie-ins, both with watches that did and didn't exist when the movie was made (so prop watches). Of course some prop watches get turned to real ones, like the Murph... They actually swap watches in the movie, and Cooper wears a Pilot Day Date before that, which did exist.

It's an interesting take on the German B-uhr design, but kind of ugly really

And how about the X-01 from Space Odyssey?

You can find more of their appearances here

Ever want to own a moon phase watch but don't want to shell out thousands for one?

Casio has some quartz models that sell for about $70... I don't know if they are true moon phase, or it's just a 30 day clock though

People are going crazy for them on reddit right now. They come in square, round (with and without day date), and Apple

Found my old Seiko I bought on my first trip here in 2003! Seiko 7T92 chronograph "Hong Kong Limited Edition" number 53 out of 1000. I didn't wear this for very long, as I also bought a G-Shock on that trip and it was my main watch until it was replaced with another G-Shock, then another.

https://i.imgur.com/9uiXLTq.jpg

I just replaced the battery thinking maybe I could use the chrono for cooking, coffee, etc. But as you can see, for some reason they made the 1/20 seconds the most legible subdial, while the minutes subdial (shared with hours) has an index that is barely legible. So it's utterly useless as a chronograph unfortunately.

I realize now how small this thing is when I wear it. Can't tell with a wrist shot of course, but looking down, it looks like I'm wearing a women's watch LUL

Speaking of which, I also found the Movado I bought for my wife in the late 90's... it doesn't get much more 90's than this! But actually I think it looks pretty nice even today, so I replaced the battery in it as well.

I’ve got this Citizen Eco-Drive that’s about 20 years old… it’s always been one of my favourite watches and I feel like it’s aged really well. Still runs fine on the original battery too if I leave it out in the sun for a bit to charge up!

I am posting because there’s some discussion on moon phases and it does have a little moon phase feature on it that I always thought was fun! I have never seen another Citizen like this one, seems hard to find info for even when I search the model number. Probably the only thing my ex-wife ever did right was buying this for me haha!

Badhobz 07-11-2023 10:07 AM

thats a good looking watch. Citizen watches generally are quite handsome.

68style 07-11-2023 10:13 AM

I is Citizen watch?

SkinnyPupp 07-11-2023 03:03 PM

That's pretty neat that it actually shows the 29.5 steps of the moon phase. So I guess Citizen really do a true moon phase, and don't just time it to the day calendar. Cool!

What is that 12 step dial for on the right?

68style 07-11-2023 05:37 PM

It’s for the month haha so many movements on this thing

Fucking DUH of course it's the month! FailFish

That's a pretty cool take on one of those overly complicated watches. I just found out Sinn makes a chrono model that is pretty nice.. Costs about $5500. I assume that's about as cheap as it'll get for a mechanical watch like this...

68style 07-11-2023 07:00 PM

That looks brilliant!

It’s hard for me to like the rectangle watches, square is sometimes nice but round is always the best I think

SkinnyPupp 07-12-2023 10:28 PM

Right when I say that, Longines comes out with these for $3000 :ahwow:

Loving the new offerings from Longines. Just saw the new Conquest chrono in reverse panda and I'm really considering it as my next purchase. When they get heavily discounted of course...

What do you guys think of buying expensive watches from microbrands vs all the big name guys?

I mean 1/2 the money you're paying for a Rolex is just for the name on your wrist... so what do you think of these boutique manufacturers that are about the same price as a Rolex but with none of the pedigree? How do you justify a Zenith watch for example? They're like lower end Rollie and Panerai/IWC prices... but I had never heard of them prior to a few months ago.

Seems like they still sell out so people are buying them. I'm not sure who these people are, but I definitely noticed this phenomenon since I started paying more attention to watches recently.

I am also finding it interesting how many people are gathering a consortium of watch aficionados together to design a watch in like... asia... or USA... and then just having it "built" in Switzerland. There's a whole bunch of them... Dumoreau ( https://dumoreau.com/ ) is one that comes to mind as a Cali company. Farer ( https://farer.com/ ) would be another one from the UK. A SINN or Hanart would be about the same price for some models as a Dumoreau or Farer, but carry a lot more brand panache having a massive history as watchmakers and doing everything in-house.

Seems like they're selling well... but again it's an almost $2,000 CAD watch and I'm a bit confused what people think they are getting for their money? Is it super wealthy people that just thought it looked good and it's a cheap wearer for them? Or are people thinking they are collectible and paying up to grab a limited edition?

I am totally not sure and open minded for education / discussion :)

It really comes down to branding, and some branding works for some people, and not others. Zenith or Hanhart have history going back to the 1800's and that's branding (especially with companies not even owned by the original family, but even that's branding in a way). That type of branding may appeal to you or me, but to other people it doesn't matter. That Christopher Ward or Farer with the unique modern takes on 'entry luxury' is what appeals to them.

The quality of the movements themselves will be the same, since they are the same movements. I think that's why you can get a heritage brand for $2000 or a new microbrand for the same price. The rest of the watch, well that's a risk with the newer brands, but the more famous microbrands seem to have pretty decent reps.. People are buying a lot of them, and we don't really get many reports of bad QC (compare that to Seiko).

A Rolls Royce and a BMW 7 series have about the same material cost in the same way that a Rolex and a Zenith have the same material cost.

You could easily argue that all luxury goods fit into the category of "paying for the name." The reality is you are paying for the name. But that doesn't mean that you are getting ripped off. Scientifically, a $25k Daytona does nothing better than a $400 Tissot quartz.

You can spend $7500 on a Panerai that'll be worth $5000 after 2 years. You can also spend $15000 on a Rolex that'll probably be worth $15,000 or more after 2 years. You tied up twice as much money, but it actually probably cost you less to own, even including the opportunity cost.

Be careful not to fall into the trap of thinking you can 'rent' a luxury watch for free with the expectation you'll be able to sell it for the same, or even marked up. The hot resale market got insane over covid, but that was resellers and speculators more than customers, and people buying a commodity aren't looking for a sweat-caked Rollie with scratches on the bezel from normal wear and tear.

SkinnyPupp 07-14-2023 03:58 AM

I was at the art museum again today, and went back to the Chinese Market pocket watches they had on exhibit, and noticed a familiar name

https://i.imgur.com/gOEDgFB.jpg

This is a zodiac calendar watch made in the mid 1800's by Guinand

Yup, that Guinand, which would eventually move to Germany and make Sinn's watches throughout most of its history until the 90's until he bought them. They make some really nice pilot chronos, one of which is one of my personal 'attainable dream watches' if the day ever comes that I can justify spending like $2K on a watch (I know that's peanuts to most people here, but I'm not a big spender)

I would agree that this is definitely not a guarantee. But if you can buy a halfway desirable Rolex at MSRP, the chances of being able to own it for "free" given increases in MSRP over time is pretty good I think.
