Anyone here been to American Cheesesteak on Davie St?
They opened last week and I would love to hear any reviews.

Tried la taqueria on cambie for the first time yesterday

$10 for 4 tacos, didn't expect them to be so tiny lol, left hungry

Overall didn't really enjoy the food, pretty bland if you don't douse them in their hot sauces

+1. While the tacos aren't the greatest, they're a tad expensive. There isn't much choice in Vancouver when it comes to Mexican.

Haven't gotten to writing the post for it on my blog as I want to go try a couple more times, but here's pictures & some initial thoughts.

American Cheesesteak Co. | Menu

1st visit

ACC Fries. Good crisp double fried fries w/ garlic parsley parmesan. $4.
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6113/...0f182f13_b.jpg

The Philly w/ provolone. Small, $8, felt underwhelming, bread dry/chewy. Went around 3pm.

2nd visit.
The Coppola. Ridiculously overpacked with meat, and I find for $10 (2 more than a regular philly) so much better and worth the value. Could have been the time of day, this was at like 1130pm or smth.

shaved prime rib, sautéed mushrooms, onions and green peppers, hot banana peppers, house-made roasted tomato sauce and provolone.

Love how La Taqueria's blowing up. I remember when they opened back in October 2009, I went there almost every week for lunch. I guess I'm a hipster. Of food.

went to Martini's on Broadway again
left satisfied as always

great pulled pork poutine, and calamari was nice and fresh as always (not to mention huge portions)

Bleh..

The place up the block is better.

I had the mole from Dona Cata....seriously? Shredded chicken....
The same chicken used for the tacos and stuff. And the dish, honestly, sucked.

The Tacos are ok, sauces make them great though.

Up the block North or South? There's only El Caracol south of Dona Cata.

Dona Cata's claim to fame is tacos, so I wouldn't expect a great mole. Would you go to a steakhouse and order lobster?

I really like the East Hastings location. I've been meaning to try the Cambie one but the lineup is bullshit all the time. Has it really gone downhill? I guess with most restaurants in Vancouver, they eventually come crashing down pretty fast :D

I do agree that the prices here are a ripoff but then again many "working class" foodstuffs in Vancouver meet that criteria anyway.

Tried this place tonight, ordered the original. The bread for the sandwich was disappointing and the beef itself was a little too rough. The sandwich itself overall was mediocre. I'm a harsh critic when it comes to cheese steak sandwiches, I've had the best ever in Philadelphia.

6.5/10, but will come back next time to try the prime rib ones.

The academic pub house, it SUCKED!!!

Food was good the first time i went but then it took about 45 minutes to come.

Second time going today and it took forever also, waiter did not come to us, the food wasn't as good. Still pissed.

I am never going there again..

bcrdukes 11-07-2011 12:25 AM

Unfortunately, you can't rely = on places like the Academic Pub House to be good on a consistent basis.

BlackZRoadster 11-07-2011 08:20 AM

Black & Blue steak house.

Part of the Glowbal chain. They serve 3 types of beef. A regular which i forgot the name , PEI blue ribbon, and Snake River Wagyu.

I had the foie gras , oyster rockerfeller, and Onion soup to share with my fiance. Foie gras is good but you only get 1 piece for $19. Compare this with le crocodile at $25 for 3-4 pieces with a scallop, makes le croc a good deal. The oysters were 4 tiny oysters, wouldnt order again. Onion soup lacked richness in the broth, and the cheese was not strong enough, it was piping hot though.

Foie gras 8/10
Oyster Rockerfeller 7/10
Onion soup 5/10

Main dishes: We ordered the PEI blue ribbon rib steak 32OZ to share. Steak was really good, they include 4 sauces on the side. The jus and the green sauce were really good! I like this steak more than Hy's, Gothams, or Shoreclub. We also had the steamed spinach which was nicely seasoned with garlic. Fried mac and cheese sticks (4 pieces) was ordered as well.

Steak 9/10
Spinach 8/10
Fried mac and cheese 7/10 (Very light tasting and not rich in cheese taste like other steak houses)

Overall 8.5/10 I would definitely visit again and again. This place is loud and not like a typical upscale steak house. It's more of a night club / lounge atmosphere with great steaks :)

Chimichurri, right?
Edit, ya. Double checked. The 4 sauces are
Cabernet Jus | Chimichurri | Peppercorn | Bearnaise
