Don't go to any of those donair places.

Instead

Donair place next to celebs, and babylon cafe near english bay.

Donair King get the chicken

Babylon get the lamb.

Fritz is ok, smoke's has a better poutine. Just go to fritz and get their 40 mayo dips and fries.

Meat and bread no complaints, I'd eat there more often if I was in the area, since they have good special subs

pajos is good only on a sunny day and if you want to sit outside, if you don't want to lineup daves is ok (fries suck though)

there are no good greek places in vancouver, I'm gonna say that olympia pizza and niagra falls are pretty good, but I wouldn't go out of my way (besides I only eat calimari)

Try Zakkushi on main. also make sure you try bbq master under superstore. Steveston pizza company has amazing pizza.

taco luis. 9.5/10. last rate i gave was 10/10.

but because of the elimination of hst. what they did was they added price. so once you order something, you'll pay the same price as hst. damn you taco luis, but i still love you.

Just came back from Guu Garden on Nelson and Howe. I give is a 7/10. Food was great but just very slow.

PJ 04-06-2013 11:31 PM

The Guu on Robson is pretty fast from what I remember They have a section where you sit on these legless chairs on the floor with your shoes off. Very Japan-like, so that was cool. I like all the imported drinks and treats too.

Red fish blue fish in Victoria harbour. Wife had the tempura salmon and tuna belly bacon tacones and I had the 2 pc. cod and chips. Hella cheap, fresh, creative menu and great food. Took a long time, but to be expected as it was bumpin. You better go before noon if you want to eat in less than an hour and a half. Doesn't seem that long, til you consider that it is a food trailer.

Oh man, the line-up there is always insane, but I love RFBF. The tacones there are my usual go-to item on the menu. You should've swapped the chips for the seafood poutine for an extra $2.75. Best $2.75 decision I've ever made. :sweetjesus:

westopher 04-07-2013 10:59 PM

i thought about it, but then saw it was miso clam gravy. I HATE MISO GRAVY WITH SUCH A BURNING PASSION. Might have been good there, since everything I was there was a total winner, but I wasn't willing to risk it for a first timer.

j.f0ng 04-07-2013 11:05 PM

Ah gotcha. I don't mind miso, so I guess that's why I thought it was so good.

westopher 04-07-2013 11:09 PM

I don't mind miso usually, but the miso gravy is basically always a packaged base made for gfs/sysco and whatnot. Packaged gravy has got to be one of my biggest mind exploders. My ex-roommate used to be a food rep and always tried to convince me how good of a deal he could get on pre made stocks and gravies if I wanted to stop making stocks everyday. He would even show up at the restaurant to convince the manager to convince me.

As somebody in the industry, are you not afraid to get a server to ask the kitchen "how it's made"?

Maybe I'm stepping over the line, but when I go out and get a burger, I will ask them if the patty was made in-house.

If gravy is such a make or break for you, wouldn't you just ask?
:suspicious:

I have very educated guesses on the subjects. Sometimes you just know haha. Hell, some places it will say the burger is made in house right on the menu and it will be a straight up lie.
*cough DONELLY GROUP*cough

bcrdukes 04-08-2013 10:22 AM

Slightly off topic but what is it about Donelly Group that people dislike so much about it? Is it almost an insult to be a cook for them or something? (Serious question.)

westopher 04-08-2013 10:31 AM

I wouldn't say its an insult to be a cook for them. Its a job, and it would be arrogant to insult the cooks there like that. Its just that its expensive, and the food is pretty terrible. From an industry perspective, I hate them because of their constant special treatment from the city when it comes to liquor licenses. There have been some notable exceptions made in the past and present for them, that are clearly due to something fishy when you learn about the ins and outs of our archaic liquor laws. As I said too, the fact they blatantly lie on their menus is pretty disgusting. I know a lot of girls who've worked there as servers/managers and they weren't treated very well. I've also been treated like shit as a customer there when I first moved here and didn't know any better than to set foot in there.

donelly group also has an extremely high turnover of bartenders and staff.

sonick 04-08-2013 02:48 PM

semi-related off topic note, Derek Roy's brother is a bartender at Library Square & Queen's Republic.

Had the steak tartare and cheese toast to start, I'm addicted to steak tartare so it satisfied a craving but Hy's is just on another level

Then had the bone in strip steak with veggies and lobster Mac and cheese on the side steak was great and the lobster Mac and cheese had huge peices of lobster!

Good to know, as many places tend to skimp on the shellfish in their dishes..

Looks like a good meal, from the pics
