IIRC, you need to use the BB desktop manager and 'add applications', then go through language selection. I've got asian characters incl chinese trad/simp; but only eng/kor/jap inputs.

The data plan is a 'rider contract', it's a secondary contract that tacks on to your existing plan, but is separate of anything else.

Is there any way I can use GPS without signing up for Rogers Data Plan?

I did some research and someone mentioned using BIS for GPS via downloaded mobile Google maps, but BIS still needs data plan right?

The data plan is required to download the maps. Downloading Google Maps only downloads the application - no maps are downloaded with it. Maybe (and I'm guessing here - I don't know for sure) you COULD use Wifi to pull down the maps, but then you'd have to be near a Wifi source when you're using Google Maps.

If you acquire the phone yourself and you add data on, then no there won't be a cancellation fee. The data is an option that is added on voice plans. I suggest you call *611 to confirm, as you'll need to call them anyways if you want to add data on your existing phone plan.

It is only subject to cancellation fees when its part of a promotion (ie. getting a brand new bold on a 3yr contract)

this is the only reason i'm steering clear from BB right now.

no intentions on getting a data plan yet but i'd miss out on the gps function.

my e71 has third party gps without data plan usage , but no BBmessenger..

the agony..

Sooo I got my Bold about a month and a half ago and I love it, I came fromt he iphone 2g and the Bold is SO MUCH BETTER...but......

I've had it replaced once, the trackball light was flickering and was dim, as was the keyboard.

I've been using the replacement phone for a week now, and it is also doing the same things, it started out really bright and now its dim again.

IS this normal for the Bold??!?!

Should I call and try and get another replacment? Try and get a Curve 8900 instead? Get a better plan?

Any suggestions would be great

i think it's normal its suppose to make the screen the most comfortable for yer eyes, well thats what i think it does

Alby 04-08-2009 04:41 PM

it shouldn't be flickering, but the screen and keyboard light seems to dim in and out depending on your environment lighting. the LED light is a light sensor as well.

Yes, got it work yesterday at one try

I just bought the phone, so I never update or install any app. in it.
That's probable why I have no problem with it.

Alot to learn. This is my 1st smart phone.

illicitstylz 04-09-2009 11:05 AM

K did some further research.

According to crackberry forums, there are two " major " free GPS applications that don't require data plan.

1- AmAze
2- Telmaps

Can anyone vouch?

not the bold itself, but you can get a 3rd party gps app which does.

I tried it... I'm pretty excited about the new features. They changed the interface around for a bit.

But I wouldn't install it, it's quite buggy right now, and you can tell that they are still testing it, because they have the "Send Comments" at every menu.

I just swapped back to .237
