Regarding TSN's POY, it all depends on your definition of PLAY. Is it only what D. Sedin did with the puck after getting it? Or the entire play, starting with the faceoff win to the puck goin' in the net?

I tend to go with the latter.

It is this. Goal of the year is a totally different category. Also, Play of the Year isn't just limited to meaning "Individual Play of the Year"

That's why Backstrom's tic-tac-toe play is in there. His goal was just a quick release goal, but was nomitated into the competition because of the entirety of the play.

AzNightmare 05-26-2010 06:16 PM

^ that's a good point.

I initially thought this contest was just about the individual play.

Well, Sauve was supposed to be a definite first rounder but fell under the pressure and had a pretty bad first half of a season. In the second, he recovered.

Eitherway, we'll see in about 2-3 years time. He's going to with Victoria or Manitoba next year.

you forget: June 25.

Also, Draft Combine is this Friday at 4pm. There are always some funny interviews to be had.

Nice... NHL pays 10x more than what he was making before. :D

Let the draft/prospects talks begin

shawn79 05-27-2010 02:52 AM

Would you take Kirill Kabanov at 25th overall if he falls to us?

Of the 100 players invited the NHL Scouting Combine, maybe the most interesting player was Russian-born forward Kirill Kabanov.

Kabanov's struggles on and off the ice this season have been well-documented -- his court battle with the KHL, his wrist injury, leaving his team in Moncton three games into the playoffs, getting booted from Russia's World Under-18 team.

I wanted to hear Kabanov's story, and during the 10 minutes he and I talked, he was brutally honest about what happened and where he believes his future lies.

"I can you tell one thing -- I will stay in North America forever," he told NHL.com. "CHL, AHL, NHL -- I don't want to go back to Russia." He even went as far as saying that he's considering giving up his Russian citizenship."

With Russian-born players under a microscope for a number of reasons, his words in his Combine interviews are vital. Kabanov's talents are unmistakable, but his off-ice decisions are what teams have to take into consideration.

If he is still there, I would.

murd0c 05-27-2010 06:50 AM

I would take him no questions asked. He just needs proper guidence off the ice and the canucks would be able to provide that!!

Gillis isn't going to risk draft picks on chance players IMO

The argument is going to be moot anyways.

It is almost certain that he will be picked up before that time.

punkwax 05-27-2010 07:23 AM

I would have to agree wth Hondaracer.

However, I have not seen Kabanov play. If he's THAT good, the smart thing to do may be to draft him. You can't take the "safe" pick every time. Risk = reward every once in a while.

He was touted to be first overall for a bit but now still in the top 10 by all accounts.

No way he is going to drop THAT much.

Tim Budong 05-27-2010 09:29 AM

drafting is a crapshoot,
thats all

Kabanov's stock is "lower than expected" are due to the fact his discipline on and off the ice are questionable.

Wrong. His ranking in this years draft is 12-15 max. He hasn't been touted first overall for a LONG time.

Jordan Schroeder was ranked in the 10-13 position in last years draft and he dropped to 22nd for Vancouver to pick.

raygunpk 05-27-2010 02:45 PM

i have a feeling kabanov will go 2nd round at best

Gt-R R34 05-27-2010 02:56 PM

we could use another bure =D

btw, with Stevie Y signing, i have a hunch that he'll trade to MTL Lecav. for Price and some closer expiring contract. to match cap.

They need a new #1, price talent is there but MTL fans pwn him, he can't take that kinda pressure.

shawn79 05-27-2010 02:57 PM

kabanov was a top 10 prospect last season, leaving moncton QMJHL due to attitude problems and being kicked off russia WHJC dropped his ranking to late first :S
thats bullshit!
