Read 7seven's post below to know that this isn't exactly a "great" pickup.

My only concern for $2.5 mil is that his recent stats where more a product of Detroits system, but I guess we will find out soon enough.

murd0c 07-03-2009 10:32 AM

he will be getting more ice time and play a bigger role with the canucks, I have a feeling his stats will get better not worse.

411ken 07-03-2009 10:35 AM

I'm happy with the signing.. now if Sundin signs for relatively cheap, We will be fine..

Samuelsson/Sedin/Sedin
Demitra/Sundin/Kesler
Burrows/Wellwood(if he signs)/Hodgson/Grabner
Rypien/Johnson/Hordichuk

Lets hope so.

From reading Red Wings boards this is what I've gathered on Samuelsson

Pros: hard worker, cycles the puck very well, shoots a lot

Cons: not the best skater, always shoots into the goalies chest (Red Wings fans call him Logo Hunter), prone to turnovers, very streaky player

murd0c 07-03-2009 10:44 AM

no matter which way you look at it that's really the only stanly cup experiance we have on the team now. It's ad's us some depth and he has the experiance playing the big games which we don't have.

If the plan is to play with the twins he just needs to be part of the cycle and shoot the puck which is needed on that line even tho it was getting better last year.

I wonder if they are still going to try to sign sundin? I have a feeling this might be his replacment and theres going to try to give Hodsgon and Grabner a shot at the big time.

That leaves them with enough cap space to get a #1 puck moving d in a trade which they need.

Anson Carter probably missed half of the opportunities he had when he played with the Sedins and he still got 33 goals. If Samuelsson can hit the net, instead of fanning or missing completely, he should easily be able to equal Carter's total if he plays with the twins.

If it's true that he loves to shoot then he'll fit right in with the sedins..and as long as the puck is going towards the goalie, that's fine... and who knows, maybe they'll have a swedish connection...and I know Burrows had a great season and I like the guy but I will be happy to see him back on the 3rd line as a checker that scores. But then again, this is AV so lines will not last forever.

silk 07-03-2009 10:50 AM

didnt most of us complaning canucks not shooting the net enough ? there... we got a player who shoots alot, although he is so called "logo hunter" but at least there is potential to score a goal if he shoots.

why complain ? as long he shoots, there will be rebound... if someone can finish the job, winning 60+ games isnt too hard.

rsx 07-03-2009 11:09 AM

I'm happy with the new Pyatt replacement.

Hondaracer 07-03-2009 11:10 AM

Few points from team1040:

samulson is considered one if not the best conditioned athlete on the wings

played with the twins on the same line in the olympics

a right hander

cup experiance

CRS 07-03-2009 11:24 AM

10.8 - 2.5(suspected) = ~8.3 mil left in cap space.

murd0c 07-03-2009 11:26 AM

We have offered him an extension at 1 million but he has yet to accept or file for arbitration.

More like 7.2m.

RRxtar 07-03-2009 11:40 AM

NHL numbers.com is saying $7.282 remaining cap space. I think we are done with big signings at Forward. Maybe add some depth but thats it. I would expect to see a ~$3m #4 and ~$1.5m #6 defenceman signed or traded for tho. We also still need a backup goalie (Sandford) at about $.6m

Sedin Sedin Sami
Burrows Kes Demitra
Raymond Wellwood (RFA) Bernier
Hordi Johnson Rypien

Hansen (RFA)
Grabner
Bolduc

Mitchel Bieksa
Edler ?
Salo ?

SOB (RFA)
Nicholat
Rome

Lu

Schneider

Red Wings site says he shoots right.

I really hope that a team site would have the proper info.

This guy is the absolute pinnacle of Canuck idiotness. I wish the guy could just listen to him talk.

Prior July 1st, he favours a Splash. Now he's all up in MG's jock for opting not make splash  Then he backtracks and says retaining our players is a SPLASH.

then in the earlier topic of Matts Sundin's worth of $10 million last year vs. Gaborik's worth being $7.5 on his contract expiry.

He responds:

gaborik is neither.

When just a page before, he knocks on Gaborik because inflated contracts shouldn't be necessitated by "intangibles" which for some reason, he has no qualms with Sundin being offered $10million for 2 years. (supposedly for this year and last's)

Lastly, post July 1st, he comments on how superstar contracts have a tendency to "handcuff" teams yet he has no qualms that our own superstars handcuff our team. (ie. Luongo asking for $8m)

Seriously. Mike Gillis could fart and Hondaracer would think it's a good move. His arguments and opinions swing back and forth so much depending on which way is most convenient of sucking Canuck balls. That lack of objectivity seriously negates the merits of his opinions.

Not really racist! 07-03-2009 12:35 PM

Good to know we picked somebody who loves to shoot and has cup experience!
Time will tell....

Wondering what defenceman we will be getting..

Yet they offered 2M a year for 2 years to Bernier. Sounds like someone is getting ripped off.
