Kariya can go screw himself.

That guy is all about the money and we don't need players like that on our team

canucks not getting kovy

Ronin 02-04-2010 08:15 AM

Not surprised. The trade doesn't make sense and personally, I would be disappointed in Gillis not sticking to the plan if he traded away anything more than Cory, Bieksa and a pick for Kovalchuk...which is probably not enough to land him. Kesler and Raymond aren't going anywhere for a rental.

Yes, it would be amazing to have a player with that kind of talent around but Kovalchuk is just one man and I definitely think anyone willing to meet his $11.3m a year salary demand is INSANE. Kovalchuk is awesome but he isn't Ovie, Crosby or Malkin. He won't elevate an entire team by himself like one of those guys would and is not worth more money than them.

Ronin 02-04-2010 08:16 AM

Oh and fuck Kariya. $6m a year for that guy? Another terrible trade. If you're going to trade picks, trade for young talent. I wouldn't argue if Gillis wanted to trade a high draft pick for Backes. That guy is entering his prime but fuck Kariya.

I don't know about that, he took a 8.5 million dollar paycut to sign in Colorado and try and win a cup there. I'm pretty sure no other player in the NHL has taken that big of a cut (maybe Selanne did it the same year?) when they could have got 4-5 times what he signed for on the open market.

I'd be happy to get Kariya if we didn't have to give up to much but Backes would suit our needs a bit better right now.

He used that as a loophole so he could reach UFA status earlier. He'll continue to insist he did it to be with Selanne and to try and win a cup but his main reason for it was early UFA status.

At a team rally following the Ducks' game seven loss to the Devils, Kariya promised to bring the Cup to Anaheim in 2004. A verbal agreement with then-GM Bryan Murray was broken by Kariya after his $10 million-per-year contract was not qualified. Murray intended to re-sign Kariya at a lower amount (believed to be in the $6–7 million range, to which Kariya had verbally agreed) and use the extra money to find the final piece to the Cup puzzle via free agency. Instead, Kariya took an $8.5 million paycut, ensuring himself unrestricted free agency at season's end, when he and former Ducks teammate Teemu Selanne signed with the Colorado Avalanche on July 3, 2003.[

This is what pretty much vilified him to every single Ducks fan... He did great things for the franchise but for him to say what he said, and then do an about face? Makes me somewhat glad my boys won the Cup without him, and that there's a new #9 in town!

Greenstoner 02-04-2010 10:41 AM

My long shot pick for upcoming games :

Van Tie Ott
Crd Tie NSV
Edm to win at Min
SJ to win at STL
ANA at LA to win

lol, $3 dollars bet = $637.35 in payout.. lol

Grandmaster TSE 02-04-2010 11:00 AM

min over edm
crd over nsv

SumAznGuy 02-04-2010 11:20 AM

With the Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes well under way, Atlanta Thrashers general manager Don Waddell released a team statement Thursday afternoon to explain why the club is exploring the trade market for their 26-year-old superstar.

Kovalchuk became the subject of trade rumours after reports surfaced that he could not come to terms on a multi-year contract with the only NHL team he's ever played for. The Russian sniper is in the final year of his current deal and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

"Our goal from the start of this negotiating process was to sign Ilya Kovalchuk to a long-term contract," said Waddell in the statement. "During the process, Kovy affirmed his desire to be a Thrasher for life. We've spent several months exploring scenarios with Kovy and his agent to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, and offered many lucrative packages in an attempt to meet his financial objectives. Unfortunately, we've reached an impasse and at this point he has declined all of our proposals and we can't reasonably go any higher.

"Ultimately, we offered Kovy more than $101 million over 12 years, which would have been the highest contract signed by an impending unrestricted free agent in the history of the league. If accepted, this contract would have been the second highest offer ever to any NHL player. We also met his desire to be the highest paid player based on average annual salary with a separate offer of 7 years at $10M per year ($70M). This offer is $0.5M higher per year than any other player.

"If we went beyond these offers, we would not be able to retain the young players on our roster when it came time to sign them, or invest in other top tier players needed to assemble a truly competitive team. Therefore, we are aggressively exploring all of our options as we move forward."

for sure, ATL could have offered him the max $11M and he still would have said no. ATL isn't going anywhere anytime soon, which is sad.

Gumby 02-04-2010 01:53 PM

If Kovalchuk wanted out of ATL, why does their GM state that "Kovy affirmed his desire to be a Thrasher for life"?

Somebody's not telling the truth...

It just doesn't make sense:
1) I want to be on your team
2) Pay me the max
3) Yeah I know that means the rest of the players will suck

Kovy doesn't want to be seen as the bad guy.

Kariya pulled the same thing. Look at what I posted up top.

Expresso 02-04-2010 02:09 PM

And Waddell probably respects Kovy enough not to bad mouth him. He has probably been a pretty good player for the organization for the last couple of years.
