Galaxy S2 Root/Unlock How To:

1) Download the following files:
Samsing KIES - What's new for Software & Manual SAMSUNG
Odin for Windows and CFRoot Kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1103399
To check what version you have: hit Menu / Settings / About phone / Baseband version

2) Install KIES
Unzip the 2 files in Odin
Unzip the 1 file in CF-Root-SGS2_XXXXXX.zip

3) Power off the phone.
Hold the following buttons down: Home and Volume Down. While holding these buttons down hold down the Power button too. So now that you're holding all 3 down the phone will turn on. When you see the Samsung GTi91000m you can release all the buttons. You should now be in Download mode with a big green Android.
http://localhostr.com/file/RCKvAM3/down%20sgs2.jpg

4) Plug in the phone.
Run Odin3 v1.85.exe
It should detect your phone in the first box under ID:Com and will highlight it yellow
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/5705/odinm.jpg
Make sure that Auto-Reboot is checked and F.reset time are the only ones checked
Click PDA and choose the tar file CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4 you extracted in step 2
Click Start.
When it's done flashing your phone will reboot. Unplug.

5) Now you're rooted and back in Android. You'll need to connect using wifi and install the following app:
https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_result
Run this app. Click Step 1 then when it's ok click Step 2
Your phone should black screen and reboot. Give it a minute. After it reboots you're unlocked.
(Note: When all is working. Copy out the Galaxy_S_Unlock folder on the phone via USB and keep it in a safe place. This folder holds your encrypted IMEI/Mac Addresses/Etc.)

I'm doing this all from memory so hopefully I haven't missed anything.

FAQs:
1) Yellow Triangle: Means you're running custom kernel/rom. Doesn't affect anything. Can be removed but it's a lot of work for nothing.
2) Bell GPS navigation: Does not work if you aren't a Bell customer. This app checks to see if you're on the Bell network before it'll activate the license so use a different app like Navigon, Copilot, Sygic, etc.
3) The unlock app can be uninstalled when you're done. It's not needed afterwards.

The problems of SGS is not solved yet and they roll out a new SGS2. Awesome.

hongy 02-14-2011 10:58 AM

that's what samsung is best at

^This, my brother and I have the Captivate and Vibrant and we both have to plug in halfway through the day.

J____ 02-14-2011 12:50 PM

^ r u guys using juice defender? my phone lasts the whole day with moderate use and up to 3 days with light use with juice defender.

dasani604 02-14-2011 01:34 PM

Or flash a different kernel. My SGS has been lasting on average longer than a day with moderate use (as in no youtube/vid watching/intense game playing).

Gnomes 02-14-2011 02:18 PM

The point is - all these problems should be fixed by samsung itself. Not through 3rd party apps, kernels, etc.

Preemo 02-14-2011 03:34 PM

Yeah, it's true. It's really sad that I have to resort to another ROM to fix my GPS and get awesome battery life.

If Samsung devoted more time into user experience and their bloatware, maybe I would save up for one. I know Samsung is a hardware behemoth but damn, with all that money they are raking in, crappy software should not be their forte.

ya the phone sucks in battery vs the iphone. I'm on a custom rom/kernal with juice defender and it lasts pretty long. But it feels better and quicker than iphone 4. The samoled screen also takes more battery too.

shaping up to be a Q3 release
Quote:

During the Nexus S launch event this morning I had a quick conversation with Samsung VP Paul Brennan who stated the incredibly thin Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S II will be released in Canada. They are still working our the carrier details but he’s optimistic that it’ll launch either really late Q2, but more likely early Q3 time period (definitely in time for the back-to-school time).

No word on price points but Brennan also stated that Canada might beat the United States in releasing this device.
how disappointing considering my contract is up early June and It's being released in UK May 1
I dont want to wait until end of the summer, I guess they want to compete with the upcoming IPhone? Odd that he also mentioned Canada will likely get it first before US.

The release date for the UK, Germany, and the rest of Europe has been pushed to early May. Read our full article here

Alright, we have to warn you about this one. It’s not looking pretty, but at least we now know.

We have just learned that the Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 Android 2.3 Gingerbread Smartphone will be released at the beginning of May 2011. The 16GB version will be priced at $820USD, while the 32GB will cost $949. This information has been acquired from popular online electronic retailer Clove.

Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy S II is looking to be one of the most expensive smartphones on the market. It does say that the prices are subject to change, and we sure hope so. Given Samsung’s history of failing to update their phones, in conjunction with the fact that customers can get the Atrix (on contract) for as low as $129.99, it’s likely that there will be little interest in this particular Superphone. We all know this phone is packing amazing hardware, but few can justify paying over $1000 for a smartphone.

Would you pay $1000 for this phone?

Check out of our review of the Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II, i9100) here.

We’ve also compared the Motorola Atrix and the Samsung Galaxy S2 here

Also, it appears that the radio inside the Samsung Galaxy S2 will enable it to properly function on AT&T’s network, so it’s likely it will be offered their soon, and thankfully, probably subsidized by a healthy amount. In Canada, it will function on Rogers, Bell, and Telus’ HSPA+ networks, and be able to receive healthy download/upload speeds. No word yet on whether it will function on T-Mobile, but we will keep you posted as soon as we know.

twitchyzero 04-17-2011 10:45 AM

on paper this phone trumps all upcoming phones except for

1. resolution is worse than the iphone4..a phone from 2010
2. no HDMI out (pretty important if it's capable of recording 1080p @ 30fps)
3. plasticky profile

m3thods 04-17-2011 10:46 AM

^ the cost is the only reason i'm not excited. the software updates i could care less because the ROMs pumped out on XDA are far superior to stock, but $1000 for a phone is crazy.

ime2006 04-17-2011 01:22 PM

SGS S2 has 2 different versions.

1 with Tegra 2 built in, one is Exynos.

I am ganna get Tegra 2 version or iphone 5

PS. Can't believe people who own SGS, still on stock kernel and rom ???
That's just a pure waste!!!!!!!!!!!!!

twitchyzero 04-17-2011 01:43 PM

exynos benchmark's been looking really good..tegra 2's going to be more run of the mill it seems

gdoh 04-22-2011 11:19 AM

any update on when this is supposed to come to canada??

twitchyzero 05-09-2011 02:41 PM
