this is the advantage of living 5-10min from steveston haha |
All the hype has really jacked up the price. Last year, I could get them for like $7.99/lb ... maybe price will drop still but I remember distinctly it was the long weekend in May. |
Just ate 5lbs fck so goot |
Wheres the best place to buy em? |
I'm also bargain hunting |
seriously.. all the guys on here that gets it for cheaper because you got hook ups, dont even bother posting to show off. if you want to share your source then ok, if not then dont bother posting. anyone went to china town to get them yet? I need to get some asap, been craving them for a long time. |

Apparently even Chinatown doesn't have the prices of yesteryear; ~$10.99 see,s to be the low this year. All being bought up and shipped to Asia :okay: |
Prices won't go down, they are spot prawns which are only caught for two months out of the year, even for me i buy them off of my seafood wholesaler for $10 per lb. And I would stay away from the stuff u can buy for less than 10 because to normal people you won't know how to spot the good ones from the bad ones. There are these white spots on the prawn which mean they are almost about to die. Its hard to explain. Anyways... There's a seafood place on like 50th-51st and victoria its a chinese seafood store check it out. Its called tien wun I believe. The last time I went there they had some pretty decent prawns |
Rumor has it, the season is pretty much over? :( Anywhere to find the last batch of Spot Prawns? |
I haven't bought any since last week. Will try to grab some tomorrow. Isn't the season supposed to finish at the end of the month? T&T and Chinese seafood stores sell for $14 a pound. The one on Victoria is pretty good, also Superstore sells for a couple dollars more. I heard they were going for $19 a pound at Londsdale Quay. Still the best deal without a hook up is Organic Ocean at fishermens warf, at $12 a pound. |
Went to TNT today..wanted spot prawns, but it was $16 a pound so instead, i took advantage of their other special.. $8/lbs on lobsters.. |
Yes, the season is over, I'm out in tofino right now and the prawn fishermen have all their gear docked. |
I only had two spot prawn meals this season. The $8 lobster is awesome. But I had to cut it up myself, and splitting the head/body open in half while it's still live is pretty gruelsome. :okay: |
Damn I didn't even pick up any this season!... but I went pretty hardcore last year so I guess it evens out lol ... got myself a whole bunch of Live Uni at the wharf though! :fuckyea: |
Where do "real" Japanese restaurants get their uni? I had uni from Octopus Garden and Ajisai... Both places gave me major stomach ache 2 hours after eating. I have narrowed it down to uni because it's the common thing I had in both restaurants. It's not live. It's the ones in the white containers. |
I guess different restaurants get it from different suppliers, varying in price and quality. I know Kamei Royale and Ebisu on Broadway both get super fresh top grade uni from a very reputatable source. :) |
