steveston docks has em for $15/lb

moody 05-10-2015 10:12 AM

I went yesterday. The day before mothers day to the steveston fisherman wharf. Man was it packed. There's not much there but there are a lot of eye candy and ppl walking there. Anyways. Spot prawns $8/lbs med size. Pretty cheap! And one boat was offering a huge bag for $30 or 3 huge bags of prawns for $75. They the prawns were 15min old. I would've gotten if I didn't have dinner plans..

LP700-4 05-10-2015 05:43 PM

Can confirm 8 bucks /lb for med sized ones. Boat with bags for 30 bucks are flash frozen.

Was there hour or so ago

Ch28 05-10-2015 07:01 PM

Any idea how big these bags for $30 are?

SpeedStars 05-10-2015 08:06 PM

$8???? Gonna swoop by tomorrow after work. Hope they still have some specials

FYI, I was at Steveston Pier today -- those are just shrimps, not spot prawns. And they are generally pretty small too. A typical spot prawn is easily bigger than the size of my thumb, but the shrimps I saw today were usually smaller than my pinky.

I went on Saturday and didn't see anything either. 930am ish

I could've guessed, $8 is too good to be true.

I'm in Victoria for the weekend. Anybody know where the best place is to buy prawns there? I'm thinking Fisherman's Wharf, or would that be too touristy?

hi-revs 05-13-2015 12:29 PM

Wheres a good place locally to go for spot prawn?
Not buying to bring home per se, but dining for them?

Gnomes 05-13-2015 06:26 PM

Sorry to derail topic but any sightings of sea urchin @ Steveston? I couldnt find any spotted prawns nor urchin this past Sunday

westopher 05-13-2015 11:30 PM

Got 20lbs of live spot prawns in at work today. Trying to deal with those little fuckers on a busy line while cooking 20 other things at the same time is hilarious.

knight604 05-14-2015 12:13 AM

TnT has it at 16.99 per/lb

$16/lb at the seafood market on the corner of Gore and Keefer in Chinatown. You can pick your own, unlike T&T.

I m not an expert but I was there last week and I pretty sure there is frozen spot prawns.

an asian guy sells them at the end of the dock and he has 3 different sizes, the biggest ones are just as big as the ones at tnt market, and its 13 bucks a pound.

I dont remember the other 2 sizes are for prices, but I m almost 100% sure its spot prawns, the line up is long af.

as for the tiny ones you mentioned, those are sold in almost all the boats, those are not spot prawns, just tiny shrimps.

someone should go confirm tho.

I've gotten the normal shrimp from the end of the dock, different sizes as well, possibly the same guy you're talking about. When I got home and dumped the bag out, the sizes varied and I got a bunch of tiny ones with the size I supposedly bought. Not worth it.
