Size Matters

Never found the US imported prawns to be as big as the ones off the BC Coast

It's sweet, juicy and succulent and contains alot of "meat". Between the Dungeness crab and Spot Prawn (for the same price), I'd choose the latter any day.

Jayboogz 04-26-2014 02:18 PM

support your fellow Canadian fisherman! American spot prawns aren't as big because they keep top grade down in the states when there graded. With the popularity of these prawns they will sell almost anywhere

TNT Downtown has spot prawns for $13.99/lb

Aside from going to their pier, how can you tell if they're american or canadian?

JHatta 04-26-2014 08:23 PM

I came in looking for pictures of cooked dishes with BC spot prawns

Vale46Rossi 04-26-2014 08:25 PM

This?
I remember there used to be a guy on RS that owned a seafood distribution business or smth
and I remember buying spot prawns directly off of that guy, and it was really good and he gave me a pretty good price too (cheaper than tnt for bigger and better prawns)

but I think he got banned from RS for selling prawns lol....

Ask the guy that sells it to you. From my knowledge Tnt superstore buys from a wholesaler in van that buys from the states. If you goto your mom n pop shop should be Canadian. I'll let you guys know when the season starts our market will be flooded with Canadian prawns and wholesalers will avoid buying from the states

I was in contact with him via PM, and when I responded back it said he was banned.

That was straight up bullshit. Dude is giving us a good deal and he gets banned for it.

Bought 2 pounds today from the downtown TNT. 30% of them had eggs in the tummy. Too early in the season but the price was alright at $14.

Got my fix.

Keep them away from the prawns. That chemical smell probably kills. I did sniff the greasy foams though.

Chef Robert Belcham, famous for his Spot Prawn Boil at Refuel (Saturdays during the month of May) taught me his simple secret to some of the most succulent prawns ever: Just pour boiling water over a single layer of prawns in a roasting pan until covered. Wait 5 minutes, peel and enjoy.
