My wife went last year - said it was overpriced and disappointing. I agree with skholla, for something so easy to cook (i.e. boil for a minute), it's not worth buying here.

I CANTTTT WAIT :D

Just over 1 month away! Though it's probably gonna be overpriced again this year :okay:

US spot prawns usually come in a few weeks earlier.

Absolutely overpriced for what you get.

Like skholla said, you're way better off with just buying your own spot prawns and using Robert Belcham's way to cook them.

If you want to be fancy and you get live shrimp, put them in a bowl and give them a nice rose wine bath from BCLiquor (instead of the salted version at Asian supermarket).. then just blanche them. You can finish it with egg white if you want. This works the best as the shrimps are still alive, my friends and I do it on the boat just on Howe sound. The shrimps just go into toxic shock, as the alcohol gets into their bodies. there are so many oyster mushrooms now you can make an easy meal / picnic. They are so easy to catch, just drift and with pretty much any net you will easily get a dozen or so, heck even with a sea kayak. Then use fresh pasta to catch to sauce.

If you want to eat with the shells too, flambe them with a bit of oil and higher % alcohol, with some brandy or whiskey. Do the math first, as getting mass to ignite require quite a bit of precision. I find it the best to do it with a Pyrex bowl, as you can see the fire going to adjust the air fuel ratio.

for an awesome sauce for boiled prawns, try my recipe. Finely chop fresh red chilli and green onions, then pour into soy sauce, finally heat up 5 tablespoons of oil REALLY hot, then pour the hot oil onto the soy sauce/chilli/onion mix. Be careful not to burn the oil but you have to heat it enough to almost smoke. Best sauce for spot prawns

When will spot prawn season be and what do you think the prices are going to be like? I think last year the lowest was around $12-13?

godwin 04-06-2014 09:58 PM

It should be anytime now depending on ocean temperature until end of May (that's when the larvae are laid and adults mature and die).. Shrimps have a 4 year life cycle.. also note real spotted shrimps should have at least 3.5cm main shell and at least 2.5cm tails.. any smaller it is not spotted shrimp or it is an illegal catch.

Honestly shrimp season is all year round.. I rather have them March -> April that's when the shrimps are not moulting. Having a festival is just a trick to get people excited and sell old and dying shrimps.

catching spot prawns?

how is that done.

godwin 04-06-2014 10:27 PM

Depends when and where.. when the sun is out, the spot prawns can be caught with a net in shallow waters when they are feeding.

Else you need a crab trap. Compare to fishing, it is like shooting fish with a barrel.

The catch limit is twice a day for recreation.

Once you have done it once, you will realize how much they are making selling $10+ pound.

I find it more enjoyable in the great outdoors when there is food involved.. actually I am pretty happy that no license is need for hunting feral pigs!

deep water 200-500 feet deep, rock sea bed you kind of need to know your spots. i work in tofino and there are a few boats i trade my dungeness crab for prawns!! cant wait!! =D usually i need to give some cash ontop cuz prawns are way more expensive then my crabs! two years ago i used to supply a prawn/crab distributor and was able to get wholesale price... 80 bux for 10lbs!

planning to grab a few prawn traps myself.. but the area where i catch my crab dont have big sized prawns and going to the spot i know in fortune channel is out of the way

The Spot Prawn festival is to celebrate the opening of the Canadian season (which opens first week of May ends Mid-end june/july depending on catch)

The season is NOT anytime now until may.

Should get your facts right before trying to educate others

godwin 04-07-2014 09:01 AM

*sigh* Commercial of course there are a season because there has to be enough for them to catch to be viable. Recreational? Not so much.

Check page 107 or Appendix B of the DFO report. It is not species specific but close enough for most in our general area.

actually, spot prawns and shrimp are completely different. thats like comparing crab and king crab

Jayboogz 04-07-2014 06:32 PM

Recreational sport fishing will always complain that the stocks are depleted due to commercial overfishing. In Canada commercial shellfish fishing is one of the most sustainable industry's in the world compared to other country's.

Thing is recreational fishing for fun they don't understand that these shellfish and prawns migrate and change areas due to where to food are.

Cassijon what does your family do in the seafood industry?

Jayboogz 04-07-2014 09:11 PM

sonick 04-07-2014 09:14 PM

IIRC at least three years ago for $8/lb. 2 years ago it was around $10/lb. Last year it was like, $13/lb.

skholla 04-08-2014 07:31 AM

Must have been over 3 years ago... Last year it was $15 at the warf, also the same at t&t but was as high as $19. 2 years ago it was $12-17, 3 years ago $10-15.

heleu 04-08-2014 10:53 AM

Which wharf do you guys buy at? I've went to Steveston several times, but none of the spot prawns are live.

I'd much rather buy from TNT, Pricesmart, etc and buy the live ones at about the same price.

Fishermen's Warf @ Granville Island, spot prawns are live from that days catch, usually sells out a few hours after the boats come in for the day.
