Thinking of getting one. My 32gb is meh. I find that my recordings are being being recorded over since i forget to extract it within a day. Damn parking mode. Might get the 128gb

Running 64gb EVO as well.

I get about 3 days worth, with both front and back cameras, highest quality w/ compression.

I did turn down the motion sensitivity for parking mode down to 1 though.

Looking to update my Blackvue dr400hd first gen to something new as the battery crapped out on me. I'm looking at the Blackvue dr650 one channel or the finevu cr-500. Which one do you guys recommend? I can't find any review comparing the two.

Replace the battery. $5 and it takes 10 mins. While you're at it clean the lens.

anyone ever used their dash cam video to avoid paying a deductible on comprehensive claim?

a pebble flew off a construction truck at highway speeds...not your average rock chip...about the size of a loonie on front bumper...cracked the paint real good. It was actually visible/audible on my dash cam. If successful would this come out of the truck driver's pockets or affect the truck's insurance premium? Or would they just be able to waive off the deductible with a video proof?

Have a blackvue 3500. What program do you guys use to compile footage?

You can Youtube how to change the battery, batteries are available on ebay. Had the CR500HD before, you'll need to change the batteries way more often than the Blackvue, go with the DR650 or perhaps Blacksys CH-100B better systems with better features than the FineVu which is >2 years old now.

Windows Movie Maker, it's pretty easy to use. Import, trim, export. I usually use the preset for YouTube if I'm uploading to YouTube. No point exporting in a higher bitrate as Youtube will compress the shit out of it anyways

I've been using the Evo 128GB since boxing day on my 650-2ch, it was on sale for $50 CAD IIRC. Downside to 128GB is the app doesn't populate all the video clips sometimes, too many files. The ADATA 64GB from NCIX/Memory Express also works and it's usually $20-25, their 128GB is crap though

Don't get the Finevu CR500. It's fairly old tech at this point. I had one. Lasted about a year before the battery gave out. Also, for some odd reason, it only recorded when it felt like it, and would not record sometimes. The one accident I was a witness to (and it should have captured), it wasn't recording so it was of no use. It's relegated to my junk pile now and has been replaced with the 1st gen DR650.

The new 2nd gen DR650 has the Sony sensor so picture quality should be a bit better. I find my 1st gen DR650 not very sharp (even with the hacked 13Mbps firmware) and license plates aren't really readable until I'm make 4-5 ft away from the car. I'm hoping maybe the current gen stuff is better.

I'm using the 128GB Evo+ on my DR650. Haven't had any problems with it. I'm using the 13Mbps firmware so it's recording in higher bitrate and it seems OK. No serious issues with dropped frames.

Get the Xiaomi one. I think it has the best software and hardware combo right now for single channels.

I put in an online claim so we'll see

yeah I have trouble making out plate numbers on my g1wc when I'm moving unless they're directly in front of me

would increased resolution or higher frame rate help?

the Xiaomi's image quality looks superb...too bad it's battery-based

i'm considering the blacksys cf-100 to have rear coverage but it doesn't seem to solve the license plate issue

xxxrsxxx 04-18-2016 09:29 PM

Wondering if anyone can help out. My parents have a dual channel dash camera and was involved in a hit and run. When I play the video, I can only see the front footage. Is the rear footage on a separate file or how does it work?

inv4zn 04-18-2016 09:58 PM

camera model would help greatly.

My blackvue names them
___F.mp4
___R.mp4

Had a breakin at my condo parking lot. A woman checks to see if my car is locked.

dinfung 04-23-2016 10:15 AM

did you send the footage to the RCMP?

I have several clips covering the event, which lasted about 30mins as they went car to car and checked for open doors. Already phoned it into the non-emergency line as one resident had stuff stolen.

They drove in in a 2000-2003 Ford Taurus, but the video quality is too poor to read the plate.

Mikoyan 04-23-2016 03:43 PM

Well, my house got broken into yesterday. Wife happened to be driving home and saw the guy walk out of our driveway. VPD were able to arrest the guy a few blocks away, within 20 minutes based on her description. We forgot about the dash cam, and footage places him right at the house. Cops said the prosecutor was going to charge him with the B&E anyways as he was caught so soon after the break in with all the stuff, but the video puts him right on the same block at the same time as the break in, so they're confident the charges will stick.

FYI, fingerprint dust is pain in the ass to clean up.

Not posting footage, as it's just a dude walking down an alley.

jeedee 04-23-2016 03:45 PM

^glad to hear you or your wife didn't get hurt and that piece of shit getting arrested

Yeah. All our stolen property was recovered. Dude had stuff from other houses with him too.

Career shitbag from what I was told. Car theft/from car b&e's etc. He was breeching his conditions, so we'll see what happens. The system is what the system is.

cunninglinguist 04-25-2016 06:59 PM

Do you guys think it's better to have better framerate or better resolution when picking settings?

Depends on the dashcam, XiaoYi for example 1296P is just interpolated so it's not all that noticeable. For 60 FPS vs 30 FPS at night time it just doubles the frame so again not all that noticeable.

I tested out a few cams that supported 1080 at a true 45 fps and it does pickup license plates better at night for sure

45 FPS no HDR
Spoiler!

30 FPS with HDR
Spoiler!

The difference is very noticeable but after that experience with the Evoque I stuck with 45 fps. I can always crank up brightness in post but much harder to enhance it so that a plate is legible

Update the blackvue application, it should play both at the same time.

extracrunchie 04-26-2016 08:17 AM

What is the best camera out today in terms or reliability and quality?

I have the blackvue 400 season 2 and the image is not clear, Im just waiting for a chance to upgrade it...............don't really want to get another blackvue.

TOPEC 04-26-2016 08:49 AM

What's wrong with blackvues? Been using the 400 with out PMP since the beginning n it's still good, no lens fogging n still working great today. Then switch over to a 650 2CH on PMP so it's recording constantly n no issues. Will be getting a 750 2CH on PMP for my SUV. Never had any issues with blackvues.
