well having money doesnt stop these guys from accidently trying to murder you. I wouldnt be so concerned about myself, but spy balloon occasionally drives the old beast, and if anything happened to her, id fucking burn that place down.

Hondaracer 07-14-2025 10:44 AM

That’s why with virtually anything, I try to do as much as I can myself.

Wife will ask, can’t we pay someone to do this or that if it saves time

And I’m 1000% on board with the concept of time is money and paying for someone to do a dirty job like an oil change is worth it. However, EVERYONE is so fucking incompetent these days can barely trust someone to flip a burger let alone work on your vehicle.

Hehe 07-14-2025 10:53 AM

I know this is RS and all, but seriously... move to Tesla or at the very least, EV for your DD.

Teslas dominate every single crash test there is on the planet and have proven track record to save drivers even in the craziest crashes.

And there is no maintenance really for EV. One of main reasons to switch to EV fully was the services were getting extreme. Hondas were easily $150 for even the most basic service and for the Porsche Cayenne was 4 figures every time I went in.

Yeah, cheaper to DIY or 3rd party, but really... with how cars are designed now, oil change... maybe. Anything else is a pita to work with.

yeah crashes that are caused by them!!! they are the literally the worst drivers on the road right now. :yuno:

But you're right, the maintenance or lack thereof is tempting.

One of the "mechanic" people I've met in the last year, guy got a gig to fix my other neighbour's minivan...

Now, being the nice guy I am, I decided to help the guy for free to swap out a transmission...

I warned the mechanic... the case of the transmission is aluminium, so don't be using your big impact gun to slam on the transmission pan after changing the filter...

What does that fucking moron do to save 10 minutes? Impact guns the bolts on the pan... Every single bolt stripped their hole and as soon as he started filling up the transmission, it leaked everywhere. The minivan owner had to get the vehicle towed to another shop and got a massive bill to sort out the transmission.

Buddy goes "oh what a weak transmission... junk!" and takes zero responsibility for impact gunning the transmission bolts.(The impact gun he has a giant super duty one used for working on huge trucks.)

The other option was to NOT have done any maintenance on the Lexus as it would have been perfectly okay any way. :D

EVs are gay
Crash tests are gay
My Chrysler ICE vehicles from the 80's and 90's are so simple, maintenance is a breeze, parts are almost free... and the turbo 5 speed is still fun to drive and tinker with

EVs are for women, homosexuals, delivery drivers and people who hate driving.

I agree with this. Ever since hopping into a self-driving Tesla, it was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a car.

Badhobz - You damn well know this is my dad's strategy. Oil changes? Maintenance? Check engine light? Fuck all that! :fuckthatshit:

Here he is today driving around in this 200,000KM+ Lexus RX300. He's laughing at you right now. Fuck that guy. :okay:

Badhobz 07-14-2025 11:14 AM

Your dad is like a fucking legend. Thats pinnacle toyota ownership. Its so well built that it maintains itself!

I can imagine him already saying to you, "I told you so!" :rukidding:

I spoke to him on the weekend and asked if he changed the oil this year. He laughed at me and hung up.

Destination Toyota in Burnaby on Still Creek by Costco charges under $120 for oil change and you get to use their $10k coffee machine. They have quick service for oil also, so you don't need an appointment.

Self-driving cars are fine for your grandma or when you're wasted... like why does the world want to take the joy out of manually using a clutch, feeling the turbo spool up, hearing all the mechanical noises and always be thinking "is that normal or do I hear a misfire/vibration/clunk", it's like a feast for the brain to be in control and drive. I also like how driving makes me feel slightly in danger all the time, it keeps your situational awareness sharp. You're always checking mirrors, looking out for that wild person speeding 80+ kph faster than you behind you, cops, errant pedestrians, feral housepets running wild. Driving is fucking fun.

Machines and AI are GREAT for some things, like counting and sorting coins, twisting reality with art, and storing huge amounts of data and information.

Machines and AI are working towards reducing your enjoyment of life in some ways though:

1. Destroying dating through apps and algorithms which ruin the serendipity and pursuit-nature of romance
2. Destroying driving through reducing traveling down to a passive experience with more and more regulations coming
3. Destroying 3rd spaces when virtual worlds and virtual shopping is better, easier, and cheaper than the real thing. I.E. cheaper to Nintendo Golf or Tennis than the real thing, No serendipity farming at the Blockbuster store picking out a movie with your hot girlfriend.

Technology has made life so amazing and so easy in some ways... and I think it is fair to say tech has made some aspects of life worse, MUCH worse in some cases, and society has yet to react and keep up with the times, might be why we see so many fucked up people in pain across every city and town in Canada these days.

I’d rather just take the bus.

Great68 07-14-2025 11:32 AM

I do as much work on my cars myself unless it's something I don't have the specialty tools to do (or would be a massive PITA to try to attempt without).

I primarily do it because I enjoy it, it's like a hobby. Ensuring the job is done right is a big secondary bonus. Saving money is actually my lowest motivator.

I actually look forward to "Annual Oil change day", where I do all three of my cars in one go. Time is money, but I have the process down so tight that I can change my car's oil faster than the time it would take me drive to/from a shop and wait to have them do it. Win/Win.

Like Westopher I'd rather take a bus than own a Tesla and it's certainly not an uncommon thing right now. I was out at dinner on Saturday with a couple friends and we needed an Uber and one of them, someone who isn't into politics at all, goes, "Can we get something other than a Tesla?".

While some people still cling to Tesla there's plenty who are totally turned off of them including those who aren't interested in politics - their sales numbers reflect that.

Jason00S2000 07-14-2025 11:37 AM

I will 100% admit that the Plaid I got a ride in was the fastest car I've ever been in.

But while fast.... it just didn't feel... like what fast should feel like. Then again, I was only the passenger, maybe the actual driving sensation of a Plaid is fun.

This is sigable :lol

bcrdukes 07-14-2025 11:38 AM

I would rather own a Toyota MIrai or take the bus than:

1. Own an SUV
2. Own a truck
3. Own an EV

Hondaracer 07-14-2025 11:41 AM

Newer gen model S plaid is the only car that is actually a good looking design in their entire lineup.

I’ve said this before but we have friends with like a generation old model 3, just the base and the guy is like “man what a nice car! Such a good looking car!!”

And I literally have to bite my tongue and be like, are we looking at the same vehicle? lol

One of the grossest things you’ll see on the road is the Tesla owner with some “anti Elon” sticker on it. Like fuck bro you got your entire personality on display eh?

Tapioca 07-14-2025 11:44 AM

RS is like the 1%. The reality is that driving in urban/suburban environments is pretty terrible on a daily basis because of stop and go traffic, higher volume, and tight parking spaces. That's why EVs and SUVs with autonomous features sell - people want to be isolated from the road and they don't actually care about the act of driving.

Re: oil changes. If you have a garage, I don’t see why you wouldn't do them on your own. It's like the simplest thing to do and requires nothing more than ramps and simple hand tools for the majority of cars. If oil changes are in the 200-300 range, you can save 75% if you DIY. Filters from RockAuto are like 10-20 each for OEM and Castrol Synthetic or Pennzoil can easily be had for $40/jug when on sale at Canadian Tire or Walmart.

bcrdukes 07-14-2025 11:47 AM

Yo, Tapioca. You really are in the 1% if you're paying $40/jug of oil at Cambodian Tire and Walmart. It goes for even cheaper than that! :D
