Bought new snow tires for the EV from Tire Rack. Cannot find any snows for the vehicle here in Canada. All four tires cost me $245 USD. I crossed the border expecting to pay duties and taxes since the tires are made in Japan. Nice lady took the paperwork, then looked at me and said, “You can go, sir.” Score!

What's everyone's experience with bringing wheels back into the country? Trying to figure out how to bring back ~$1700 CAD worth of wheels (a set) without being taxed.

I've brought wheels back before but they were like $500 CAD only (got taxed cause within 24hr).

If I can come back without being taxed for $1700 if I stay 24hrs or 48hrs, I can make it a roadtrip to Portland or something :alonehappy:

Bring back a wheel at a time and pray

Teriyaki 01-29-2019 10:24 PM

Done multiple sets of tires with no taxes over the years, immediate turn around in PR and Blaine.
Most were in the 800-900range. Was fully expecting to have to pay (calculated that it would still be cheaper than buying locally) but have always been waved on through.

I believe the 48 hour rule was raised but even then its nowhere near $1700. You'll probably get better odds though.

nvm

$200 pays for your time and a trip to Portland?

MG1 01-30-2019 10:39 AM

Depends.............. a road trip is always something I look forward to. An excuse to go for a nice drive. I love driving. Especially in the US. Polynesian Days in Beaverton, for example. Food Trucks in Portland. The casinos, lol.

Freeway driving, so good. Get to blast all my weird music and singalong at the top of my lungs. Maybe I'll tag along with Akinari. That way I can declare half of his wheels for him................ not. Unless, he wants to go to Vegas!!!

This is basically what I do when there's a big dif in price between US and Canada and I have other things to buy.

I think it as a free road trip down to PDX.

With 2 kiddos, we get 3200 worth of allowance. (Or at least that's what I think. Never had CBSA said otherwise) Yeah... they are supposed to get stuff that's actually for them (which honestly it's not hard to justify. Last black friday I upgraded their iPads, all their cloth and shits can all go in there. And CBSA usually doesn't go that much into detail but rather simply ask the grand total). That's 384 in taxes in saving, not to mention any price dif.

A nice suburb AirBNB/hotel along the way down to PDX can be had for as little as 70CAD if I shop around, Add another 150 in gas. I've got enough money saved for my weird microbrewery/Stumptown coffee bean supply for the next month or so.

1st time in secondary in years and years

why do they tax on total amount and not pre-WA sales tax again?

is the only explanation for tax on tax: because Canada?

I read on RFD somewhere is because that is the amount it took for you paid to get it to the border as a consumer. I'll edit if I can find the thread.

It's here

Ebola is the name of the CBSA guy on RFD. I think they can even add shipping costs too if they wanted to.

i wonder if US agents tax on top of the 12% PST/GST declared for their residents coming back

acrophobia 03-10-2019 02:39 PM

Chicken products not allowed across the border after avian flu in California. Had to trash 5 dozen eggs when coming back this weekend :(

Look in the Nexus thread. But afaik, it was pretty instant for most people. 2-3 day turnaround at most.

Applied in Mid Aug, nexus expired in November but since I had an application pending it still worked, got my renewal in Mid December; no new picture though :/

MG1 03-12-2019 06:45 AM

Fucking hell............. random check, they said. Got told to go secondary. Oh well, they did a vehicle search and I was on my way. I declared two parcels. Had receipts, so all was fine. What a pain, though.

Mine took 2.5 weeks from the time I submitted my renewal application to receiving the new card in the mail.

Expresso 07-17-2019 10:08 AM

Are there any 24/7 parcel options in Blaine besides 24/7 Parcel?

Some pretty bad reviews lately, but I'm not a customer so I don't know if they hold weight.

Where are the reviews? Always had a great experience with 24/7 Parcel.

Yelp. Should correct myself and says some of the reviews are quite old. Most of the negative reviews are pretty lame though, where people go before getting the notification.

Specifically speaking it sounds like there are times they will run out of lockers and you are stuck picking up in person. Does this happen often?

i have epic reviews, i email them often and they usually respond within a few hours; always a response also and when I'm on site.. super professional.

I pick up maybe 5 times a year(5th year) from here. Last time was for a set of 4 rotors and front and rear brake pads.. They fit everything into 1 locker (3 packages), unless you're buying something super awkward, most items will be placed in a locker. I've never had to pickup anything in person during business hours but I've never purchased anything extremely large or weird shaped. If you're getting rims or something large there's a higher chance of having to pick up in person. I've even had 2 helmets shipped in one box fit in a locker. They do have a large variety of lockers. I've had zero concerns here.

Been going there for years and never had an issue where they ran out of lockers and I order stuff frequently so I'd say no, it doesn't happen often

MG1 07-17-2019 02:36 PM

I go there often - at least three times a month. No issues, but I'm always looking for alternatives.
