Yea that was one of the councillors arguments that a huge portion of assaults are carried out on the drug users/mentally ill/marginalized people anyways

So we catch these repeat bums on camera destroying shit. So what? They get caught, get released the same day. They add to their rap sheet. They go back to destroying shit. They've got nothing to lose. How is getting them on camera a deterrent? Nothing will change before we put away the repeat offenders for good.

CCTV seems like a good idea in practice and tbh I don’t see a downside but it’s not very powerful… like my building has a mail area and they decreed it safe for Amazon drops cuz there’s 3 cameras pointing at it but thieves knew packages are there and keep breaking in the front door now to steal them, they don’t care that there are cameras everywhere, a covid mask and baseball cap fixes that.
Most of the time it’s just providing a feeling of like “At least I know what happened” and you’re standing there watching the footage like that meme of Arthur with his fist clenched powerless to actually do anything lol

We need 2-way radio monitors attached to the cameras, have someone on the other end shout out "Hey! I see you, quit it.. QUIT IT!!" if they see any vandalism or stealing of this here property!

footage (if good quality) is useful in prosecuting if suspect(s) are caught. it may deter people but isn't a magic bullet unless it's actively monitored and responded to like the flanders pic.
our legal system once prosecuted is another story altogether. i think doing it for the majority of dt, including the tourist/party areas isn't a bad idea.
i mean when i'm at the mall i'm certain i'm on cctv, no one notices or cares

That's pretty wild they voted it down. CCTV is everywhere, have these people ever visited the UK? 
Even in Canada you go into a mall or most private businesses, surprise you're on camera.
As GLOW said, it would certainly help in identifying and providing evidence against some of the more heinous crimes that occur down there (one's that would elicit jail time).

Why the hell is there a near 80 year old on city council? 
She won't even be alive in a few years to see the changes made by policy she's voting for now. Dinosaurs like her had their time and need to move the fuck on to retirement. Get some fresh blood in there, ASAP. There needs to be age and term limits on politicians at all levels.

There seems to be a lot of resentment towards the current municipal "leaders", and they have shown themselves to be extremely incapable in managing the City as well as its finances.
Of course, there is no guarantee that the new crop of people in City Hall won't be as incompetent as the current ones...  | |
