As mentioned before, I don't have any issues with the renaming of Trutch Street into šxʷməθkʷəy̓əmasəm / Musqueamview Street -- at least people can say that Joseph Trutch implemented racist policies against Indigenous people during his time in office.

But with Pattullo Bridge, the fellow that the bridge was named after seems to be a person worthy of legitimate recognition. He was the BC premier that oversaw the original Pattullo Bridge's construction (during the Great Depression, no less), and he contributed to the initial WW2 wartime effort during his time in office.

This is exactly the kind of thing that pisses people off, esp those who are more conservative in their views.

I am not deliberatly trying to argue for argument's sake, and you've provide a good enough reason as to why the Pattullo Bridge should be renamed. But if there isn't really a good reason to ditch a name that already been in use for a long time, then it's just like pandering to the indigenous community and become disingenuous.

What exactly does indigenous community get from it? Recognition of any sort? I drive quite frequently on the Sea to Sky lately and see all the signs for places in indigenous languages, and sure, I'm not a native person... but if I saw the sign in Chinese... would I feel any different? Not a single bit. Ok, you might say because I'm not a Canadian born individual so I wouldn't feel anything. I once joked with a Québécois buddy at work when I used to work on the East that he must really bad when we drove past certain part of Ontario and signs were no longer in English/French. And he's like "wtf are you talking about? There was French?!?"

Instead, why don't we do things like funding Indigenous language program, cultural lessons... etc. From what I get from my kids at school, they get maybe a day worth of special sessions to teach the pupils about it? So, if an indigenous pupil comes to their school, they are done with their culture. We don't need full immersion style kinda school, just special program for those who wants to participate. Like an hour or two after school. While at it, fund programs where kids from indigenous group could adapt better to our society.

We are offering all sort of program for them "ONLY" in their special zone. We basically locked them up in there. There's very little incentive to leave indigenous areas because they lose so much benefits. How can you expect them to integrate with our society?

This is the same with so many of our "benefits" programs. The people who receive them basically become dependent of them. They have very high incentive to stay in the program.

I think the renaming stuff is pointless to get upset about, but it doesn’t do anything meaningful. Any programs and education related things are where the money should go, and certainly indigenous people shouldnt lose 90% of their benefits if they don’t want to be confined to living on a reserve.

The BC School Curriculum now literally incorporates indigenous content and does require credits in indigenous studies to graduate.

I was just gonna say this myself -- in the last 2 years in elementary school, my kid has had whole education units on indigenous contents. And it isn't like they just bring in a guest to do a talk or something. It is literally an education unit that lasts for a few weeks -- taught alongside other units, of course.

At least if you rename shit into Musqueum/Squamish/whatever use fucking actual latin characters people recognize. It makes absolutely no sense why IPA is being used when no other language in the world uses it in their writing system.

Recently visited New Zealand and Ireland, both countries are in the process of reviving their "native" languages Maori and Irish respectively. Guess what? People seem to be generally supportive of that shit there. It's a lot easier to read their signs and use their place names on a regular basis without having to resort to things like @#&$&%^! in the name.
