Maybe Benning was not confident in Madden wanting to sign with the Canucks

Mike Oxbig 02-17-2020 05:42 PM

What other cap dump do we need?

Eriksson - 6 mill
Sutter - 4.375 mill
Baertschi - 2.291 mill
Luongo (cap recapture) - 3.033 mill
Spooner - 1.033mill

16.732 mill cap space wasted. We could be cup contender this season

BlackV62K2 02-17-2020 06:22 PM

Not sure about giving up Madden for this....

whitev70r 02-17-2020 06:22 PM

^ Canucks are cup contenders this year ... if you listen to some commentators. The West is apparently wide open.

BlackV62K2 02-17-2020 06:28 PM

Good test against the Bruins coming up

I have a feeling this had a lot to do with it... not sure where he would have slotted in with our current centers

sonick 02-17-2020 06:35 PM

Benning probably would be at risk of losing his job if Canucks manged to miss the playoffs this year. Maybe an insurance policy for that with Boeser and Ferland out.

+ this = SeemsGood

Jmac 02-17-2020 07:29 PM

It’s so Benning to give up a 2nd (in a draft where we’ve already traded our 1st assuming we make the playoffs) and our 2nd best prospect for a 40-point pending UFA.

Blah_Teggie 02-17-2020 07:35 PM

Great trade by the Canucks. I’m super excited bout this one. Can’t wait to see what Toffoli can do with his old buddy Pearson or with Miller and Petey. Not sure why fans are so upset at losing out on a player who’s never played a game at the NHL level. I truly believe LA would’ve gotten more for Toffoli if they held on to him until the trade deadline. But good for us. I guess Canuck fans are never satisfied with any trade JB makes unless it’s an absolute gift like the Leivo trade. Where are the people who bitched at the Miller trade now? Sure JB has made a few mistakes like signing Eriksson but what GM hasn’t made a mistake? After all, he is the GM that drafted us Boeser, Petey and Hughes

bobbinka 02-17-2020 07:43 PM

Is it so hard to keep every asset, fleece other teams without giving up anything, and draft like you can see the future? Comon, GMJB.

My guess is he'll be getting back at least a 2nd before the draft.

highfive 02-17-2020 08:05 PM

Rantanen out for avs. Maybe banning can flip baerschti or Goldie for some picks

punkwax 02-17-2020 08:55 PM

They’re getting a proven NHL’er. Risk vs. reward.

Hughes hadn’t played an NHL game yet at this time last year, so I guess by that logic, it would’ve been cool to trade Hughes, a 2nd, and a 4th liner for YET ANOTHER MIDDLE 6 WINGER last year ..

The Miller trade was an awful trade that, so far, has worked out extremely well for us. Sometimes you go all-in on a pair of 5s and it works out. It doesn’t make it a good play.

How is the Miller trade awful from the get go? If you know anything about hockey hes a swiss army knife for coaches.

Miller was a former mid 1st round pick

That’s an awful comparison... are you really comparing Hughes to Madden?

spoon.ek9 02-17-2020 09:52 PM

all we can do now is wait and see how this pans out..

Mike Oxbig 02-17-2020 09:55 PM

Next: trade joulevi + eriksson to ottawa for demelo and tierney

Vancouver finished in the bottom 10 5 years in a row (bottom 3 in 3 of those 5 years), gave up a 1st for a 50-point player on what was widely considered to be an albatross contract.

That’s his argument (No NHL games = worth less than proven NHL player), not mine.

6thGear. 02-17-2020 10:09 PM

I don't mind the trade but imo its a bit overpayment. Although we won't know if Madden will even make it to the NHL.

Madden considered a top 40 prospect by TSN ... last month ...

It must be nice to be able to argue things both ways. If the Miller trade didn't work out, you'll be saying "I told ya"! But since it has worked out, you still say it's an awful trade. And yes, you are totally correct, that is exactly what I said. Trading an unproven Hughes is the same thing as trading Madden. Why are you so high on this kid anyways? Look, I know nothing bout Northeastern hockey and I'm not gonna pretend I know anything about it. But how is the competition there? What level hockey is he playing against? All I know is Madden is 150 pounds! 150!!! How many 150 pound guys have been successful in the NHL??
