He has a better chance somewhere else. He's not taking Petey, Miller, Horvat, Gaudette, Beagle or Sutter spot. If this accelerates our success, I'm all for it but like I said a bit overpayment. I think Schaller + Madden was more than fair

whitev70r 02-18-2020 07:46 AM

Overpayment is JB's greatest strength.

Ch28 02-18-2020 08:05 AM

lol if anyone things Schaller has any value. He was purely a cap dump.

spoon.ek9 02-18-2020 09:24 AM

Schaller-Beagle-Motte has been our best 4th line in a long time so he did have some value. Maybe not $1.9mil worth though, I can agree on that front lol.

After seeing all the comments and reactions the things that make the most sense are:

- Benning is all in to make the playoffs (self preservation)
- Need a winger to replace Boeser until he heals and because Ferland is out for season
- Past success with Pearson on the 70's Line in LA.
- Bo needed a fixture for the 2nd line winger spot (assuming this actually works out)

Toffoli did just record a hat trick in his final game with LA, so there's that too.

Hondaracer 02-18-2020 09:42 AM

Honestly i think Benning should take more heat for the Ferland signing..

I know everyone in the media wants to make it a "personal story" about the person and not the player, but the guy was 100% damaged goods, no team wanted to give him term or money until the Canucks came along and paid full market value on the longest term anyone was willing to deal out, and now he's probably finished playing hockey

or at the VERY LEAST, he's never going to be the player you signed him to be and as such will be overpaid, and not bring the aspects he was specifically signed to bring.

SumAznGuy 02-18-2020 09:56 AM

Boeser out for at least 8 weeks with teh broken rib.

source? last I saw it was rib cartilage fracture and 3 weeks

edit nvm, I just saw another announcement

SumAznGuy 02-18-2020 10:13 AM

The trade makes sense now. 8 weeks puts us mid April.

Agreed. Ferland should’ve been signed for cheap or put out to pasture. Never liked the signing, was hoping he’d prove me wrong. Nope.

highfive 02-18-2020 12:06 PM

I thought Ferland had offers for 3 years. Benning gave him 4.

That being said, if he's injured, we just put him on LTIR right?

Yea the money isn’t really the issue. It’s that we have to spend picks and players to bring in replacements for him

I think tyfolli is to replace boeser isn't it?

Ferland was is good middle 6 to add but hopefully he's better next year.

68style 02-18-2020 02:04 PM

Picking Toffoli up in the ol pool for sure tho, Canucks are saying he's going to be on the PP etc.... keep in mind his down numbers have been playing with that boat anchor Jeff Carter, he's a legit 50-60 point player with good linemates!

I think given what has happened say we didn't sign Ferland and we are in the same spot in the standings now (realistic to say since he basically didn't play) and Boeser and Levo are essentially done for the year we'd be making the same trade anyway would we not?

EvoFire 02-18-2020 03:56 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but say Ferland decides he can't play at the end of the season, or the next season and retires, since he's not signed till 35, it won't affect our cap?

I wasn't a huge fan of the signing as he didn't seem to have done much after Calgary, but it's not like Erickkson's contract that we are dealing with here.

Tim Budong 02-18-2020 05:19 PM

If Ferland retires, it comes off the books.

i agree but i think with Ferland in the lineup you're in a much more comfortable position than without, it's a trickle down effect to some degree

I dont really care about Madden too much but its just giving away more picks :rukidding:

EuterVanWasser 02-18-2020 09:11 PM

Knowing now how long Boeser's out, I'm glad we signed an impact player. The cost is unfortunate, but missing the playoffs will cost the organization more in the long road with missing out on the experience of playoff hockey for the players to get a taste of and grow from. There are no guarantees what happens next year and the team is close this year. Is it ideal, no, but I don't fault any GM for gambling at this time of the year given circumstances the team is in and the weak division they're in.

W/R/T Toffoli, every time we play LA I comment that Toffoli is a Canucks killer.. he clearly likes to score in our rink so lets hope he know does it in a blue jersey. Ima keep the cup half full on this one.

Mike Oxbig 02-18-2020 10:40 PM

isnt subban a locker room cancer?

would you guys take a gamble on subban for stetcher + eriksson + luongo recapture? both have 2 years remaining

RiceIntegraRS 02-18-2020 11:00 PM

^this is coming out of left field no?

I cant see why New Jersey would do this deal. Can u even trade a recapture penalty? Sounds like something Ottawa would want to trade for so Melynk can save 3mil. Anyways to answer your question, Yes I would take a chance with Subban if that means Ericksson is off the team. If they exhausted all options on getting rid of Ericksson.

nah 02-18-2020 11:40 PM

The Canucks aint' going anywhere if Boeser isn't ready for the playoffs.

Can't see Ferland retiring though. Who would give up that money!

If you retire due to injury you still get paid out as far as I know.

Unfortunately, Rick Dhaliwal reporting that he is in Utah with a concussion specialist and is working to return next season.

As a pro athlete you never want to admit it’s over, but if he comes back plays 10 games and has another concussion or symptoms it’s going to fuck over the Canucks hardddddd
