VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The Vancouver Aquarium could close for good in two months if it’s unable to secure at least $1 million a month in immediate financial support.

Lasse Gustavsson, CEO of Ocean Wise, which operates the aquarium, said it projects to lose $3.3 million a month after shutting down due to COVID-19.

“For the aquarium and Ocean Wise, the conservation organization, this is a disaster,” he added.

Ocean Wise applied for $9.5 million in emergency funding from the federal government three weeks ago, Gustavsson said, but hasn’t heard back yet.

The CEO sounded optimistic about getting the funding necessary to help keep Vancouver Aquarium in business. The fact that they've had consistent dialogue between all branches of government, both Federally and Provincially, bodes well for them.

And before anyone says it's not all about money. I think the captive animals inside would much rather die in the wild than be spectacles behind glass.......... to die, anyway.

Trying to find a good quote about let me die without chains than live two more years without dignity........... something like that.

EDIT: I take back some of the things I’ve said. I keep mixing up the aquarium and the zoo. Ocean wise does do a good job of taking care of injured animals. Having said that, I don’t agree with the captivity of cetaceans.

Vancouver Aquarium isn't another Seaworld or zoo/aquarium in some shit third world country. Everyone wants to lump them in with the whole "YOU'RE TERRIBLE FOR HAVING CAPTIVE ANIMALS!!!" narrative, but they do a lot of excellent work.
  • They're the 4th largest aquarium in North America
  • Canada's only marine mammal search and rescue facility
  • I believe they're the only marine mammal search and rescue facility on the West Coast
  • One of the first in the world (first in Canada) to ever receive an American Humane certification for their treatment of animals
  • Animals that are rescued and rehabilitated to health are almost always released back into their natural habitat. Only animals unfit to be released will be kept in the aquarium so they have a safe place to live
  • Integral marine research work
  • Huge educational resource for children

Taiwan can make 10M a day, but aren't exporting them. US and Canada should be on their knees begging them for masks.

Japan worked a deal with Taiwan to get masks

Still waiting on Canada to do the same

Tell your leaders that Taiwan can make enough masks, get some from them for your people!

RE: the Vancouver aquarium

They also were the facilitator of the Oceanwise program, which although it's not without its flaws, is one of the most important systems to educate consumers and the food industry about sustainable seafood consumption.

Is Kirkland really that good? I usually buy the Royale ones (with the kitten on the logo) they seem really soft and also don't crumble when you wipe your ass.

Butt, but, my Charmin Ultra Strong............

I did buy a package of Kirkland about two weeks ago. Don't know when I'll get to it.

Maybe time to switch? I still have the Scotts that Costco and Superstore used to sell. The ones that were individually wrapped in plastic. I used to say, "Jesus that stuff sucks assssssssss." I hated it, but it was cheap. My Charmin is so strong, it beats using tissue paper to blow my nose with. Soft, yet strong. Like a good woman.

Hondaracer 04-16-2020 06:19 AM

I have charmin and another brand I got from London drugs and I can’t remember which brand paper towel but yea, the Kirkland TP is wayyy better. Softer, you get seemingly double the amount per roll etc.

And the paper towel, the half sheets of the Kirkland paper towel seem more absorbent and durable than the full sheets of other brands

Really can’t believe I’m having this conversation lol.

Butt it's important. I'd rather hear reviews and comparisons from people I know (well, sort of) rather than reviews from people who may have some bias, because of corporate sponsorship or chinese government influence...............

If I can get my hands on Kirkland I should give it a try (might ask parents to get it since they have the Costco membership I don't lol). On the topic of TP it seems more place have them in stock in. Went to superstore around 5pm and they still have TP and paper towel and tissue although none is on sale. However cleaning solutions still hard to find. And a tip if people is looking for Lysol wipes and Wet ones superstore have them at the customer service counter so you have go there and the limit is one per customer. They don't have them all the time I think on Tue they have restock them (at least the one in Coq).

GLOW 04-16-2020 06:29 AM

this is the next tv ad for the stuff...guys instead of talking shop talk about the softness is TP & PT :lol

MG1 04-16-2020 06:37 AM

We all gotta go, might as well, "Enjoy the go."

Speaking of Charmin, I do not like the Ultra Soft. The Ultra Strong, however, is my go to..........

GLOW 04-16-2020 06:39 AM

new take on 'going strong to the hole' Kappa

punkwax 04-16-2020 06:39 AM

The Safeway by my place still has zero TP & PT. I have some Kirkland left and some garbage brand that I bought in desperation at a big box outlet when it was sold out everywhere else. My wife grabbed another brand from Choices the other day that I didn’t recognize. Probably free range, non-GMO, organic, grass fed TP from there.

I’m avoiding Costco until I absolutely have to go. Walmart and Superstore as well. I’ll pay more $ to shop where there are less humans atm. Literally had to buy eggs from a circle K because my Safeway has been sold out for a while. Eggs from a circle K... what a time to be alive.

MG1 04-16-2020 06:40 AM

So who makes the Kirkland brand?

Well, isn't the point of flattening the curve saving more lives at the cost of taking longer before the pandemic is over?

I am not encouraging Murican Freedom™, but if they choose to not flatten the curve then it might not last as long for them, at the higher cost of lives, of course...

Kirkland on the right VS Royale Velure on the left

I also think the cost of the 8 pack from shoppers drugmart of the royale is was as much as the 30 pack from Costco

"Hey, Joe, what took you so long?"

"Man, captain's log 9.5........ then I tried the Kirkland toilet paper wife purchased last night. That shit was so soft I just hugged it for minutes. All of a sudden, I lost track of time, and most importantly, forgot all about life and that fricken, busted head stud."

"Kirkland paper products............... even tough dudes appreciate the go."

Background music and sounds - so important in television and radio ads. Now, question is, who to cast for this. Berz?

If they are willing to sacrifice the lives of their family members for their (false) sense of freedom they can go ahead. I’m proud to live in a country that doesn’t have that sociopathic mentality engrained into such a large portion of the population.
