Came across this good post on the virus, which goes over a lot of what I've been saying here, but with references to research, etc. So you don't just have to take the word of some geek on a board, you can see the numbers for yourself (though IMO the numbers out of china are completely skewed, and it's way worse than they're letting on. And any press who tries to show what's going on disappears immediately)

This actually helped convince my cousin, who was very unconcerned, recklessly so, about it, to consider taking precautions. Especially the Atlantic article quoted in there by the epidemiologist

Deaths in WA shot up to 6 today

Right? All these "flu" people should realize that "the big scary flu" they go on about infects 1-11% of the population yearly, and kills "all those people" with a mortality rate of 0.1%

This could infect 40-70% of the population, with a mortality rate of 2% Do the math!

They've been standing on the "flu" argument (for some stupid reason) and it literally proves the opposite of their point :seriously:

See how much time it buys us?"

and Canadian gov is asking people coming in from Iran to "self quarantine" meanwhile everybody they see/ shaken hands w/ or things they touch on the way is at potential risk. no err on side of caution.

There are 132,8XX school in K-12 schools in the US so closing down 48 is really nothing. Less then fraction of a percent. Didn't think US had to deal with this so soon. It's happening. People were laughing at Japan + HK + China for stopping schools, I wonder how US will deal with this.

Caronafrenzy has hit Nanaimo. Last night some guy came into our store and bought the last 3 bottles of hand sanitizer we had and the last bottle of rubbing alcohol. The dolllar store today was almost out of stock with just the travel size bottles left.

Is that a frenzy, or people just being prepared?

With a lot of countries shutting down big events... I'm starting to wonder if Coachella Music Festival will be shut down in April (have tickets/am booked to go)

SkinnyPupp 03-02-2020 03:44 PM

Wrestling fans are wondering if Wrestlemania will be canceled. They already have confirmed cases in Tampa

It's going to hit the USA really hard. Their entire privatized healthcare system is really going to bite them in the ass.

Or is it like Y2K when people bought generators and a bunch of other stuff that they returned January 2nd?

That's for sure. I don't want to be a douche to say the "Look at you now gayboys" and making fun of people who are actually sick.

Poor health care system + broke ass country + uneducated people by the millions... it'll create quite a stir. NY + LA + Chicago + Houston are biggest city of US, let's see how this rolls out.

That makes sense. Sure it won't be that bad for young people, but it will overload the healthcare system if it gets out of hand for those that need to be hospitalized.

As for China, I don't know... Trying to show off to the West is one thing, but at the same time, if they are making the numbers sound good then that will make their own people think it's not a big deal and that's not good for them, either. Supposedly they also encourage cured people to donate blood for the antibodies to help current patients. Acts as a makeshift vaccine, essentially, before one becomes available.

Yup. We are going to be so much better off when 750,000 people are lined up to get into a hospital in Canada. Hospitals that are already over capacity.

750,000 = the 19% hospitalization rate of the low estimate of 10% of the population getting sick.

Well, Singapore airlines just cancelled our connecting flight for next month. Just checked their website and 3/4 of the daily TPE SIN flights are cancelled for the next month. Full refund, no cancellation fee as we we're cancelling the entire trip.
