VICTORIA -- British Columbia has had its first death from the novel coronavirus, provincial health authorities announced Monday.

B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix and provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry also said five new cases of the virus, known as COVID-19, have been found, bringing the provincial total to 32 cases.

One of the cases was imported from Iran by a woman in her 50s and the other was imported from Italy by a man in his 30s, Henry said. Both patients have been isolated at home in the Vancouver area.

One of the residents of a care home in North Vancouver, whose case was announced on Saturday, died on Sunday night, Henry said at a news conference in Victoria Monday morning.

"We are deeply saddened to hear that one of the residents of the Lynn Valley care home who was infected with COVID-19 passed away last night," Henry said.

"Our heart-felt condolences go out to his family and loved ones."

In Ottawa on Monday, Canada's top public health doctor recommended Canadians avoid travelling on cruise ships to protect against the spread of coronavirus.

Dr. Theresa Tam previously advised Canadians to think twice about cruises but toughened her stance in a Monday morning news conference in Ottawa.

Henry addressed the cruise ship issue at the B.C. legislature.

"We are very aware that the cruise ship season is coming up here in Victoria," Henry said.

"My personal belief right now is we are in a very critical time around the world and it is my belief that we should be delaying our cruise season."

So far there are no cases of coronavirus confirmed on Vancouver Island.

Jesus woke up this morning to market carnage, complete trainwreck.

Meanwhile a reporter just asked Dr. Bonnie Henry whether they'd consider closing schools to prevent big congregations of people. Her response? There are more effective ways to separate kids in schools such as putting them in different classes, and telling them to wash their hands.

In a few weeks when reported cases pop up at schools due to her tactic, she will just cry in front of camera and try to gain sympathy points.

I don't know man, you don't think she feels bad and that the tears might be a combination of knowing there is no going back, some people aren't listening and doing what they need to do as far as quarantine and generally just being worn out, stressed out and tired from having to appear in front of the media almost everyday with more bad news?

She is the face fighting/containing the virus here in BC but don't for a second think that she has the power to do whatever she wants she still has to answer to others in regards to policy. You think she could come out and say I'm shutting down all airports, schools and businesses we're going full quarantine? I wouldn't want her job, pretty sure you wouldn't want it either.

I'm willing to cut her a bit of slack, it's not all on her.

twitchyzero 03-09-2020 12:56 PM

does dr. henry our public health officer have the power to do anything? or can only consult the premier and advise the public

CivicBlues 03-09-2020 12:56 PM

Anyone else surprised by the fact that most of BC's imported cases are from Iran and Italy instead of China. That's a fact now right? Anyone know the definitive list?

hud 91gt 03-09-2020 01:11 PM

Correct me if I’m wrong. Aren’t chinas borders closed? As in all cases in Canada should technically be from elsewhere?

I was proactive today, and filled my water bottle at home rather then the gym. Doing my part :) lol

ilovebacon 03-09-2020 01:14 PM

That is raising my suspicion. Propaganda?

Digitalis 03-09-2020 01:15 PM

Good side is crossing the border today at least the canadian side asked if i had been overseas or felt sick the US side didn't even ask.

The bad side is Iran/Italy prisoners are breakingout/let out of jails now so..... shtf

CivicBlues 03-09-2020 01:20 PM

Well it's been 2 months since China has raised the alarm. If there was community transmission within the Vancouver Chinese community we'd probably have noticed it by now but nothing so far. The Iranian and European immigrant communities though, that's another thing every day the past 2 weeks it's been either a person who travelled Iran or a close contact of a returnee. Did they ever explain how the nursing home in N. Van got it? Was it through an imported case from Iran?

Problem is we can't ban flights coming in from Iran because we don't have any direct flights from that country.

and zero from Korea when we have flights from Seoul every other days?
still in incubating stage waiting to explode?
scary......

Found this:

Filter by Canada, BC

If you don't count the HK/India lady, it looks like the last Mainland China related case was on Valentines day.

The ones from Ontario are even more surprising...almost 50% from Iran I'd say. Where's all the racist backlash against them? East Asians are getting beat up in the streets while kebabs are still being consumed freely /s

twitchyzero 03-09-2020 02:01 PM

not that surprising because many passengers from iran enter through YYZ

i don't expect there to be official restrictions on air travel but it's kinda irresponsible to visit hot spots these days for non-essential visits

China's influence on the outbreak seems to be coming to an end. Probably almost everyone who had it in that country is either dead or "recovered" (aka dead)

Boggles my mind how different the west and the east is treating COVID-19 in regards to when to wear face masks.

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/scie...tance-and-stay

Quote:

The scientists behind the research said their investigation also highlighted the importance of wearing face masks because of the length of time it can linger

The researchers also found that it can last for days on a surface where respiratory droplets land, raising the risk of transmission if unsuspecting people touch it and then rub their face.

The length of time it lasts on the surface depends on factors such as temperature and the type of surface, for example at around 37C (98F), it can survive for two to three days on glass, fabric, metal, plastic or paper.

They said the study proves the importance of washing hands and wearing face masks in public places because the virus can linger in the air attached to fine droplet particles.
Asian researchers are telling everyone to wear face masks based on their research, meanwhile people in the west who are wearing face masks are subject to racist banter or get the living shit beat out of them because public health officials continue to stress the importance of NOT wearing face masks due to their ineffectiveness.

Are Asians a different human species that are somehow more susceptible to airborne droplets, or is the west continuing to be as ignorant as ever? Mind you, those old Chinese uncles and aunties are still hacking away their phlegm in the middle of the street, on public transit, etc. etc.

Actually the mask wearing thing in Asia is a societal thing only. So far, all guidelines by governments and scientists in Asia have been telling people they don't have to wear masks unless they're sick. Govt officials make a point not to wear them in public. I'd have to read the paper this article is referring to, but it's most likely that they are blaming the spread on the fact that the sick person was not wearing a mask, rather than the people who GOT it not wearing masks (because most of them probably were actually wearing masks)

Singapore specifically sent out masks to everyone, telling them not to wear them until they show symptoms.

Italy under total lockdown now

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51810673

I wonder if the "Healthcare professionals (who) look at hard facts and statistics" will start to consider that this is... well a factual thing that is actually happening? :considered:

But no, if you're under 80, you are totally safe. "more likely to die from a car accident than to die from COVID-19" so just don't worry about it. Hey look at that guy wearing a face mask, what a total dork! lol

As above, Santa Clara county bans gatherings. Relevant for those who follow hockey as the SAP center/San Jose Sharks play in this facility.

No statement from the Sharks yet however...

I'll never understand why our government is being REACTIVE compared to PROACTIVE. The evidence of community spread is already there and I'm confident that with our lax quarantine policy that there will be many more. Yet our government doesn't think this way. :fulloffuck:
