Somehow the Emberson Kulak pairing finished +1 for Edmonton lol… no idea how |

If they are going younger, Sherwood is gone for sure. Makes no sense to re-sign him. Garland probably gone if they can find the right trade. I'd say trade Hughes and get back whatever you can get back. Then go to EP40 and say "you won't be winning or see any playoff action anytime soon" so he might waive his NMC. Trade him, and do the same to the others boat anchors. Then just tank hard for picks and build through the draft. We still got Cootes, and our young D prospects look decent. |
Sherwood and Garland are literally the 2 most popular players on the team, RIP to the comments section if those 2 get traded lol... I think most of the people in this thread are more analytical and a lot smarter than the average commenter, so we get the fact the value is high now. I love Sherwood visually on the ice how he works and his goal scoring has been great, but his underlying numbers are pretty horrible. If the Canucks were smart they'd get someone cozy with EP40's new wife and start planting seeds in her mind about where would be better to live... especially in those gray months of Vancouver winters when she's at her lowest happiness levels. He'll be accepting a trade to Cali or Florida before we know it. Don't even have to get that much back for him to be honest, addition through subtraction (of his huge cap hit) is a thing. |
I agree. I hate getting rid of heart and soul guys like Garland and Sherwood.... But IMO I rather do the rebuild now, or if they believe in this "core" they will have to trade the future to compete now... So the question is how much of the future are you willing to trade to get good quality guys to make this team a championship team or at least a contender? 2? 3? 4? 5? |

The bigger question is whether the owner Aquilini will even allow a large scale rebuild of the team. Who really has the ultimate authority and decision making power on the present and future status of the Canucks? Will Aquaman give Rutherford and Allvin permission to trade away the core players of the team to start a rebuild? Is the owner gonna accept making less money or no profit from a team that rebuilds through young players and draft picks? |
If Hughes is gone, what "core" player is left? EP40 will request a trade unless he wants to stay through a retool or rebuild. But the dude said he wants to play for a "winner." I can see Boeser staying because his gf and her family is from here. As for Demmer, wouldn't be surprised if he gets bought out in a few yrs. So Canucks are going downhill no matter what. Unless they sell the future to try to keep the team at the mushy middle... at which point we are just spinning in circles. lol. |
I'll only agree to a rebuild once there is 0 chance Hughes stays, and he's got all of this year and the next still signed. You don't trade the Mcdavid of defence. I'll gladly take 10 more years of them trying to build a team around him (even if they fail) , than to do a rebuild. The odds of draft picks and young players turning out like him or any other super star is slim to none. The way this gets talked about so much, I swear this city is going to run him out of town. Even if you didn't want to leave, you can't help but feel like ppl have written you off or have decided for you what you want. You'd feel unappreciated. I feel bad for the guy, he's the captain, he plays his ass off every night for like 30 mins, he has no control over the team injuries, he wants to win and has shown in recent years that the team can win, he's a franchise player and will be one of the top dman to ever play the game, and all everybody talks about is trading him. Who in the right mind would've traded away Mcdavid just a few years ago? We'd be laughing at the oilers for their stupidity. Insanity. |
I wonder how much Hughes wants sign a contract extension IF this season turns out to be bad. Bad as in no playoffs, again. The team and coach Foote can still turn their season around if they improve their defensive play and penalty killing. We are still early into the regular season now. If you are Hughes, how many seasons of failure can you tolerate with this team? It's not about getting the captain getting traded. The ultimate decision is about whether the captain wants to play for this team for multiple seasons after a contract extension. Like what Rutherford said after the end of last season. Whether Hughes stays with the Canucks or not may not come down to money. The Canucks have had another subpar start to their season. |
Unless things improve here, Hughes would 100% take less money to play on NJ with his brothers. |
watching the ducks game... geez ducks hockey is fun hockey. Speedy youngsters.. you compared them to our "core" and its hella slow. |
Grass is always greener on the other side. Columbus traded Rick Nash away, haven't had anything to show for it since. Calgary traded Tkachuk away, haven't had anything to show for it since. I'm sure there are many trades of prominent players that dont work end up working out for the team. You only see the results of the successful ones. Something something survivorship bias. Canucks traded Luongo, Kesler, Burrows, Bieksa, then had Horvat, Boeser, Pettersson, and franchise d-man Quin Hughes leading the way. A promising young team, just like how the Sharks, Blackhawks, and Ducks, look right now. |
Tkachuk asked for a trade out of Calgary. He never intended to stay. Same with Johnny. Calgary offered a bag of cash and Johnny still left. Tkachuk left to panthers and won a cup. If he stayed in Calgary, he would be on a team that is at the bottom. They trade Luongo, Kelser, Burrows because they sucked after 2011 and their window was closed. They never made it pass the first round after. They traded Horvat because JR and AV wanted a team that is not soft. Canucks had their "core" and their chances... Its been 10 years now and nothing to show for it. If Hughes wants to stick around and suck while they retool again that's all good. But if he has a chance to play with his brothers in about 3 years time why not. Both brothers are locked up long term. IMHO devils got tons of young talent compared to Vancouver. Jack Hughes- 1st overall Nico Hischier- 1st overall Simon Nemec- 2nd overall |
The point of those examples is that the assets received in return don't necessarily result in building a winning team. Trading that aging Canucks core got a boatload in return. If Detroit had taken Hughes (instead of Zadina) in the 2018 draft and the Canucks took Zadina, Boqvist (taken next), or Kravtsov (funny enough, we ended up getting him anyway), i'd be 100% on board with a full rebuild, trade everyone. But not with Hughes. Until he says he doesn't want to be here or demands a trade, you keep trying to build around him. He's not 35, he's 26. If he hates it here so much, he'd already have asked to be traded. He'd get a better shot elsewhere to win a cup before he joins his brothers in 2 years, right? Why ride out the rest of the contract in this shit hole? If we treat our franchise generational talent this way, why would players like Celebrini or Bedard, even in dream land, want to play for the Canucks. Heck, even if we drafted Gavin McKenna, he'd want to leave in a couple years too then. |
Because you don't want him to walk in free agency. The later it goes the less "time" management has to work deals and less return. Where have we heard this excuse before? Lol Look what happen to John Tavares in NY and why they hate him so much. If Hughes comes out saying my career is with Vancouver and I want to retire here all this noise goes away. |
Tavares had a NMC. Hughes does not. There are also no shortage of suitors for Hughes. He's a top 5 player in the league. Players don't say that until the later years of their careers. If everyone knows you want to play 20 years here, theyll build the team as if they had 20 years to get there. It's the same reason why Mcdavid only signed 2 years extension, puts pressure on management to make the team competitive today. |

McDavid signed 2 years to put him in a position to leave most likely. It makes him look good and at the same time gives Edmonton a good trade value to get something decent back. |
^ that is 2 yrs of his playing career, just to look good though. If he left after this year (before the 2 yr extension kicks imn), no one would honestly blame him for the sh*t show called Oilers mgmt. McDavid gave them 2 yrs of SCF already. |
How's that 2yr deal treating McDavid? The Coilers are still a shitshow. |

Exactly. Even with McDavid, you might not win. But do you have a better chance of building around McDavid or hoping that draft picks/prospects turn into the next.... McDavid? There's no guaranteed formula. It's just which way do you do it that has a higher chance of success. How many generational talents does a team draft/develop in the history of their existence? |
What a sick goal from Petey! That hand eye coordination. Afternoon game on Black Friday. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
What a reffing shit show lol |
