What I hope to see out of every game:

1 - Bo/Bae scores
2 - Sedins scores
3 - Lose

The Wideman one looks totally intentional...he looks directly at him and then decks him from behind.

The Lucic one, the shot glances off the helmet and hits the linesman; imo not intentional.

“I was just trying to get off the ice. And, at the last second, I looked up and saw him,” said Wideman post-game. “I couldn’t avoid it. I didn’t know where to go or how to get out of the way of him.”

I don't buy his excuse for a second. He was looking at the bench the entire time. You're telling me an NHL level hockey player cant avoid a hit while coasting into an official with his back turned? LOL! It's not even like they collided, he clutched his stick with both hands and laid him out. My guess is it was frustration from getting hit in the corner.

Ill be mind blown if the league doesn't look at that.

That vine takes the video a little out of context. He looked pretty out of it on the skate back to the bench. I'm not saying whether he meant to or didn't, but the full video gives u a little more to work on.

i just cant fathom how you can mistake ANY of what the ref is wearing for anything else than being a ref lol when he inititally hits the board it does look like he was "woozy" per say, but the skate back to the bench looked normal

Ikkaku
01-27-2016, 10:37 PM
If you were just trying to avoid the ref, you would maybe put the stick up to brace the ref from backing into you. In the video, you can see he pushes his arms in a cross-checking motion.

AzNightmare
01-28-2016, 06:06 AM
imo, Wideman was probably distracted or "woozy" from getting hit.
Initially on the way back to the bench, he didn't even notice the linesman, then at the last second, saw someone not in red jersey and hit him.

Definitely intentional, whether he was in the "right state of mind" is debatable.

Either way, no excuse though. That wasn't just a regular "collision". That was a cross-check.

If there going to spend Ovechkin and Toews for a game for missing the all star game when legitimately injured because it's the rule of law then Wideman should get a minimum of 20 games.

IMO I think he probably didn't have his wits about him and thought it was another player and just reacted. That said if you're going to apply the rules a rule thing you have to apply it to every situation not just some of the time.

40.2 Automatic Suspension – Category I - Any player who deliberately strikes an official and causes injury or who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official with intent to injure, or who in any manner attempts to injure an official shall be automatically suspended for not less than twenty (20) games. (For the purpose of the rule, “intent to injure” shall mean any physical force which a player knew or should have known could reasonably be expected to cause injury.)

The linesman was in the hospital until 5 am

Edit: Tegra apparently doesn't believe the linesman was in the hospital until 5 am ...

http://www.thescore.com/news/947505
Don Henderson was sent to hospital for precautionary reasons after a collision with Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman on Wednesday and has since been released, TSN's Darren Dreger reported Thursday.

The 47-year-old was knocked to the ice after Wideman, who was visibly dazed after being hit into the boards moments before, ran the linesman over from behind.

Related: Flames' Wideman: Cross-check on linesman was 'completely unintentional'

Sportsnet's Eric Francis reported that Henderson, who was able to finish the game, was in hospital until 5:00 a.m. dealing with "neck pain and nausea," and went through the concussion protocol.

Dreger added that a decision on whether Wideman will be suspended as a result of the collision is expected later Thursday.

I agree. Question is what is the typical reaction when you're woozy?

-Skate slowly back to the bench?
-Try to regain your focus as you skate?
-If you see something or someone in your way, you would put your arm and hand against that object to brace yourself?

I see none of that. He put his other hand on his stick and in a cross checking manner shoved the linesman. Keep in mind that the opposing preds player was skating back, he could've cross checked that player instead.

Man that whole John Scott thing and various other media fumbles and weird suspension / non-suspension and questionable referee decisions this year has really made me feel not very good about the NHL... Text book example of how to make a high quality product that speaks for itself look low quality and possibly even completely rigged.

Text book example of how to make a high quality product that speaks for itself look low quality and possibly even completely rigged.

And this is problem when there is a lack of transparency.

The NHL doesn't care though so there won't be any changes.

I liked how Shanny brought about telling why a player got suspended. An additional step that I would like to see is them making a video for why a player wasn't suspended on a borderline/controversial hit that gets reviewed.

RRxtar
01-28-2016, 03:32 PM
I don't buy the "he was woozy" thing too much. He got up had a slow skate, then had about 2 or 3 good hard strides, and banged his stick on the ice with one hand. Then grabbed his stick with both hands, and targetted the linesmans head in a hard crosscheck.

usually if you get your bell rung you either barely skate and just coast, or if you try skate hard you do the old stankey leg all over

Here's Kerry Fraser's take on the incident.

C?Mon Ref: A former NHL official?s take on the Wideman incident - Article - TSN (http://www.tsn.ca/talent/c-mon-ref-a-former-nhl-official-s-take-on-the-wideman-incident-1.429965)

This is where any free pass for Wideman ends for me. While I believe contact at this point was unavoidable, I do not accept or condone the finishing push of Wideman’s hands that exacerbated the degree of impact and caused a hard fall to the ice by the linesman.

I would ask Wideman why he didn’t bear hug the defenseless linesman to minimize the contact. Why didn’t he decelerate his forward motion in any way to reduce the impact? Finally, I would ask why he felt it necessary to extend his arms and finish the contact with a strong push on the back of linesman Henderson.

Usually it's pretty cut and dry
Kerry Fraser hits it on point, that's a 20 gamer at least

But the NHL is so shitty at being consistent when it comes to player discipline and punishments, wouldn't be surprised if he got just 5-10 games.

If they still have the fan vote next year, everyone should vote for Dorsett!

Remember that first campaign when it was "Vote for Rory"? He was leading up to the last week and somehow he was "outvoted". I'm surprised there weren't phantom votes from the NHL for Scott to not make the game.

I don't think it was that he was outvoted, it was that they said there were multiple votes from the same people so they didn't count those votes instead.

The NHL is going to learn from this. There will not be a free reign vote in for the all star. They'll change it so that you can vote from a pool of players instead of any player in the NHL.

carisear
01-29-2016, 12:12 AM
^^ I remember when they released the numbers over 4 weeks, one week was like 100,000-200,000 votes less than every other week for rory. it was obviously a case of the league 'vote-fixing'.

The NHL is such a joke. Not like the all-star game is truly an all-star game anyways.

Completely stupid theory but my mind was wondering

I was checking out Virtanen's twitter the other night to see if he'd said anything interesting lately and I found a tweet to @chloegmoretz. Oh hey, I know her she is that girl from those movies I can't remember the name of. I click the tweet and see that she actually responded to Virtanen so I googled Jake Virtanen Chloe Moretz and found a tumblr post asking if they were dating and the response to that was that they follow each other so maybe. Then I remember a picture of Ms. Moretz I saw before of her in an Islanders jersey. So she likes hockey, maybe her and Virtanen have a thing, I mean look at them they're basically twins (Chloe & Jake). They even have the same haircut. Alright nothing wrong with that. So I start thinking about the Islanders and I remember Hamonic, the same Hamonic who requested a trade to western Canada. Isles GM wants basically Hamonic v2 returned in the trade but his options seem limited so maybe a high end prospect peaks his interest. Hamonic for Virtanen in some sort of package deal, Chloe and Jake ride off into the sunset and my mind explodes because conspiracies.

I don't want Virtanen to go but this came across my mind and I felt like sharing

Shinkaruk scored a nice shootout goal in the AHL All-Star Skills Competition. Lone representative of Utica. Leads the team in goals (17) and points (32) in 37 games.

Looks like the extra time in Utica is paying off for him. Can't wait to see what he brings to the Canucks next season

Gaunce as well, its nice to see the progression that they've made arguably their best 2 players right now. They really struggled to adjust to the AHL game but have both made great strides this year.

Such a feel good weekend

Great read on the weekend and overall commentary on the current state of hockey:
John Scott gave the NHL back to hockey fans - SBNation.com (http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2016/2/1/10885638/john-scott-nhl-fans-all-star-game-2016-mvp)

Mike Milbury is such a piece of shit
Get a stroke already, you outdated sack of dried up cunts.

But the hope is that the league goes the other way with it. Embrace it. Turn All-Star Weekend not into a showcase of the league's top on-ice talent, but into the league's personalities. Stop worrying about whether the hockey will be good, or if the players "deserve" to be there. Focus more on whether or not it'll make people smile.

John Scott gave us all joy this weekend. Like, literal child-like joy. We might never get quite that feeling at an All-Star Game again, but even if the NHL gets halfway there next year, it'll be a rousing success.

This. For too long the ASG has been this manufactured, full of shit event, I couldn't give two shits about if my balls depended on it.

The hockey during the All-Star game has never been "good". It's always been a garbage game watching millionaires that don't want to be there play at half-speed in a game no one gives a shit about because it happens in the middle of the fucking season and no one wants to get injured for NOT A GODDAMN THING.

The NFL does their game at the end of the season. The MLB play for home field advantage. The NBA...well, it's pretty easy to promote something with a fucking dunk competition.

But the NHL All Star game hasn't been watchable...ever. I watch some of the skills but never the game. This year, though, it was fun because it looked like everyone was having a good time at least and that big fucking goofy grin on John Scott's face every time the camera panned to him was priceless. The guy is obviously a little nervous and sheepish about the whole situation but good on him for embracing it and telling the NHL to go fuck themselves.

The Vancouver Canucks have reportedly inked defenseman Alex Biega to a two-year contract extension.

The deal will pay him $700,000 in 2016-17 and $800,000 in 2017-18, TVA's Renaud Lavoie reports. Biega signed a one-year deal with the Canucks over the summer.

His new pact is a one-way contract, according to Adam Forsythe of News 1130.

He has four points in 25 games with the Canucks in 2015-16, and six points in 14 contests with the AHL's Utica Comets.

prust cap hit makes it hard to trade him. but if he clears, as I expect him to it would allow for a team to acquire him and put him in the ahl until the playoffs. along with the canucks retaining salary and the amount of games actually left in the season after the deadline the cap hit for him would be quite small

Relevant CBA section (aka wall of text)

College Players.
(i) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.
(ii) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and does not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the later of: (a) the fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, or (b) thirty (30) days after NHL Central Registry receives notice that the Player is no longer a bona fide college student; provided that if the Player ceases to be a bona fide college student on or after January 1 of an academic year and the Player: (1) is in his fourth year of college and has commenced his fourth year of NCAA eligibility, or (2) is in his fourth year of college and is scheduled to
graduate from college at the end of his fourth year, then in the circumstances described in (1) or (2), the Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for such Player's services through and including the August 15 following the date on which he ceases to be a bona fide college student. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.
(iii) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19, who had received a Bona Fide Offer in accordance with Section 8.6(a)(ii) above, becomes a bona fide college student prior to the second June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive rights of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class.
(iv) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19, who had received a Bona Fide Offer in accordance with Section 8.6(a)(ii) above, becomes a bona fide college student prior to the second June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft and does not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the later of: (a) the fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, or (b) thirty (30) days after NHL Central Registry receives notice that the Player is no longer a bona fide college student; provided that if the Player ceases to be a bona fide college student on or after January 1 of an academic year and the Player: (1) is in his fourth year of college and has commenced his fourth year of NCAA eligibility, or (2) is in his fourth year of college and is scheduled to graduate from college at the end of his fourth year, then in the circumstances described in (1) or (2), the Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for such Player's services through and including the August 15 following the date on which he ceases to be a bona fide college student.
(v) If a Player drafted at age 20 or older is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection or becomes a bona fide college student while his drafting Club retains exclusive rights, then his drafting Club shall retain those rights until the later of: (a) the second June 1 following the date of his selection, or (b) thirty (30) days after NHL Central Registry receives notice that the Player is no longer a bona fide college student; provided that if the Player: (1) is in his fourth year of college and has commenced his fourth year of NCAA eligibility and the Player ceases to be a bona fide college student on or after January 1 of an academic year, or (2) is in his fourth year of college, is scheduled to graduate from college at the end of his fourth year and the Player ceases to be a bona fide college student on or after January 1 of an academic year, or (3) remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, then in the
circumstances described in (1) or (2) or (3), the Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for such Player's services through and including August 15 of that calendar year.
For purposes of the above provisions, the term "graduation of his college class" shall mean the class with which the Player is scheduled to graduate during his final semester of attendance (as opposed to his matriculating class (the class with which he is expected to graduate as of the date of his original enrollment)). For purposes of clarity, a Player's graduating class may change during his tenure in college.
Furthermore, a Player shall be deemed to be scheduled to graduate from college if, at the conclusion of his fourth year of college he would have been within five percent (5%) of the minimum number of credits required to graduate, provided, such determination shall be made assuming that in such fourth year of college Player earned at least the number of credits equal to the average number of credits for which he had been enrolled during his first three years of college. It shall be the Player's responsibility to promptly provide evidence (i.e., official school transcripts and requirements) that he was or was not scheduled to graduate. Absent evidence to the contrary, NHL Central Registry shall treat a Player as if he was scheduled to graduate or remained a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class. Furthermore, a Player who is removed from his Club's Reserve List as a result of the operation of the above provisions shall be a draft-related Unrestricted Free Agent effective upon such removal.
Any Club that retains the exclusive rights to a Player who is a bona fide college student may request, at any time, that such Player promptly provide a current official school transcript and the school's graduation requirements.
As a general matter, the above provisions were not intended to cut off, and shall not have the effect of cutting off, a Club's exclusive negotiating rights during the period that a Player remains in college.

This. Unrelated to your era, but the Canucks were so bad in the late 90s that they ran these "carnivals" for a few summers just to keep morale high. Most players were out and about on the main floor, while the stars were charging for autographs. Read the Province "Provies" blog this morning they have a giant conspiracy blog about Virtanen being scratched for what appears to be disciplinary issues (they are trying to make it out like that anyway).

punkwax
02-05-2016, 07:51 AM
I've heard Virtanen likes his sauce. Probably gained weight over the break and the team already busts his chops for his belly.

Also heard he was a cancer in the WJC dressing room.. friend of mine was in Helsinki and met one of the player's sisters. Apparently she was saying he thought he was above everyone because of his NHL experience and no one was happy with his stupid penalties.

Guess the Fins were cheering him that last game after every penalty he took. Virtanen is Finnish himself so they were acting like he was their inside man :lol

Surprised no RS'ers have chimed in about knowing the guy seeing as he's from Abbotsford.

i don't understand the media's outrage over Weber getting waived and suggestions that Cracknell should've been waived/sent down

i don't exactly remember how much he was utilized on the pp this year but from what i recall his play was garbage
the only reason no one's noticed is because Bartkowski was playing at a shittier level
it's amazing how all they can remember is his 11 goals LAST season but not the fact that he's done fuck all but 5 assists in 35 games this year

Cracknell has a better chance of being claimed than Weber...low cap hit, great penalty killer, versatile bottom 6/4th liner

Sometimes I think some of these local sports writers are high as fuck on weed when they make these comments.

Seriously? Yannick Weber is NOT Shea Weber. I doubt that the guy can even hit a slap shot at 95mph on the power play, let alone the 108.1 miles that Shea slapped during the All Star skills competition. :lawl:

Weber has 94.7 minutes of PP time in 35 games (2.71 minutes per game)

He has 5 assists, all on the PP, in 35 games.

He's been a complete liability even strength this season.

Good riddance

There are players who has off ice issues (loves partying) and can actually play hockey and can contribute to the team.

Then there are players who has issues and can't.

Seguin had problems but look at him. (Benning would disagree. haha)

Evander Kane...hmm I'd say he can still contribute to a team. But man if anyone is following his snapchats, he eats junk just as bad as we all do. lol
