Trying to understand what's up with the Canucks 3rd round pick this draft almost broke my brain this morning.
For a rebuilding team, we could really use some more picks.

I'm guess he's going to have one year in the AHL then once Miler's contract is up it will be him and Markstrom for a 1/2 punch if everything goes good.

that's the plan...unless a team offers something too good to pass up for Miller over the draft
or he wants out
wouldn't be surprised if he wants out

Who on earth would offer anything for Miller at the draft?
I'm not confident that Markstrom is ready to be a true #1 yet either. I'd rather have them split the season so he can at least prepare.

thing is with miller he isnt getting any younger and why would he want to stay here when its a rebuild? Our best bet is if Anaheim gets beats by the preds and that ducks goaltending shits the bed...then I could see miller going to the ducks via trade and if I were benning u take what u can get for him!

highly doubt he'll get traded but stranger things have happened
Miller is gonna be an expensive buffer for Markstrom but I guess it can't be helped for now.

Not exactly related but somewhat, have you noticed what it takes in the NFL to aquire a 1st or 2nd overall pick in the Draft? Two examples this year as both the 1st overall and 2nd overall picks have been moved.
First Overall Tennessee trades with the Rams
Rams Get 1st overall, & 6th Round (177th)
Tennessee gets 1st (15th) 2 Seconds (43th & 45th) 3rd (76th) and there 1st pick in 2017.
Today Eagles traded for the 1st Round 2nd overall pick.
Eagles get 2nd overall and 4th rounder 2017.
Browns get 1st Round (8th) 3rd Round (77th) 4th round (100th) 1st round 2017 & 2nd round 2018.
What would it take to make a deal to move up in the NHL draft? If you had 2nd pick and were offered say a deal similar to what the Browns got today to drop to 8th but also get a 3rd a 4th and a 1st & 2nd in future years would you take it?

Signing Demko is a game changer for this organization. Potentially Cory Schneider 2.0, but ten years younger. Once Miller hits the road after the 2016/2017 season (or earlier but I doubt that), a one-two punch of Markstrom and Demko sets this organization up very well in the coming years.
After the debacle of losing Luongo and Schneider in consecutive years, I was really worried that we were entering a new era of shitty goalies for Vancouver. Martin Brochu and Danny Sabourin anyone?
With a plethora of young forwards, it's time for JB to focus on improving the defense.

Report: Thatcher Demko agrees to entry-level contract with Canucks
Justin Cuthbert Apr 20, 2016 10:54 AM
Thatcher Demko has agreed to terms on an entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks, TSN is reporting via Bob McKenzie.
He's expected to officially sign later Wednesday afternoon.
The second-round draft selection spent three seasons at Boston College. He was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award in his final season, winning 27 games - earning a shutout in 10 of those starts - and stopping pucks at a .935 rate as a junior starter.
The San Diego, Calif., native towers at 6-foot-4, and has elite athleticism for the position.

Bring on Demko :awwyeah:
link? and it better be a 3 year deal
It has to be a 3-year deal.
As per the CBA regarding ELCs:
Age 18-21 = 3 years
Age 22-23 =2 years
Age 24 = 1 year
Age 25+ = not subject to ELC rules
Age is as of September 15 of that season.
Demko was born December 8, 1995, so he doesn't even turn 21 for another 8 months, let alone 22.
The Comets may sign him to a try-out contract to get him working with Cloutier during the playoffs.

i don't know if i'd ever trade down at 1st and 2nd...3rd and below maybe but Matthews and Laine are pretty much NHL ready and will instantly make an impact. Can't say the same for upcoming prospects in next drafts.

I wouldn't call Miller a bitch. He's old and likely has another season or two of being a starter before his numbers drastically drop off (Brodeur). He'd be wasting it on a rebuilding team if his goal is to win the cup. Perfectly justified feeling on his part imo

Unfortunately, despite having good overall numbers, Miller has a rep as not coming through when you need him pretty much ever since the Olympics -- that silver medal has been an albatross for him, his play with St. Louis in the playoffs just cemented the belief and he wasn't exactly sharp last year against Calgary with us either... Not a game stealer anymore on a consistent basis. He's not going to get his wish to go to a contender as their main goalie IMO.

I hope that's true selfishly because of my pool but honestly I don't see it. Chicago has looked like shit, worst I've seen them look in years. Don't forget the Hawks managed to split the series in St. Louis 1-1 and then went on to lose 2 at home, I wouldn't read to much into momentum after one win in OT.

Thing is with JB he makes terrible trades/asset managment but one thing that fucker does well in is draft! So if we are out of the top 3 its pretty much a crap shoot but will still be confident on who JB picks...just hope he doesnt go off the board and pick some rando lol

Depending on what happens in the off-season signing wise, I'm sure this won't be the last time canucks contended for the first over all pick within the next couple years. Hopefully we don't get to many bandaid players or else we will find ourself picking mid pack and that will make the rebuild that much harder, unless we get some good/lucky draft choices.

I don't get why a rebuild/retool/re-_____ has to be the way where you sign bandaid players and trade them for picks or be a the very bottom for a high pick ( which it's nice if we do land a good player).
If the sharks end up winning the series against LA, I think they were once a team who were going to rebuild as well. But they were able to surround their older players in Marleau and Thorton with younger players now. I can easily see the same with the Canucks where we can build around the older players with the Sedins.

but they draft well. Dont think Pavelski was a high end prospect. haha
but for the kings, seeing doughty do it all and having no results is rough
The Sedins would be very effective if they weren't our only consistent source of offense.

^2 blatant trips right in front of the refs too. game should have never made it to OT.
The NHL wants to make it more "exciting" by artificially keeping games close via the officiating.
IMO, it just makes it aggravating.
Luu was slow to react on the goal, but with his age and the asinine scheduling, it's hard to fault him for being tired.

I haven't watched many complete hockey games since the lockout but that Islanders game yesterday had me excited again, that was a great game. Lu played pretty well and made some huge saves, he wasn't the reason they lost IMO.
I'm excited for the Hawks game tonight I wish I was able to watch it.
In regards to reffing I wish they called playoffs just like the regular season, letting shit go because it's playoffs or elimination game is bullshit IMO.
The NHL has always been like that, though. The emphasis that the playoffs is more important so they skew all the calls and suspensions is ridiculous

04-25-2016, 04:11 PM
Really it kinda makes sense though. If teams played all 82 games like they do in the playoffs, no one would be healthy for the post season.
More whistles during regular season keeps everyone in check for the most part so that the league has stars to showcase when the games ramp up come playoff time.

I would argue that it's basically playing the same game but with two completely different set of rules. It doesn't make sense that you can't get away with certain things but, all of sudden, because it's playoffs, you're off the hook.
punkwax
04-25-2016, 04:37 PM
I wouldn't contest that argument.. it is pretty much exactly that but that's ok with me. Playoff hockey is the best to watch because the whistles are put away.
I'm fine with the refs loosening up on calls in the playoffs.
I'm not fine with the increasingly egregious game management where the losing team gets all the calls their way.
I think the term every referee should strive for is consistency.
Great refs have it and the bad ones don't have it. It's as simple as that.
punkwax
04-25-2016, 06:29 PM
I guess my point is that the inconsistency you speak of is what makes NHL playoffs what it is.. I'm not saying I agree that there are two seemingly separate sets of rules between regular season and playoffs, all I'm saying that that in it's own way, it kind of makes sense and draws an audience which = US exposure and more importantly, revenue.
If refs put the whistles away for all 82 games, hardly anyone would make it.
If they refereed in the playoffs like they do in game 1 of the regular season, it would kill a lot of the excitement that playoff hockey brings.
In the famous words of Todd Bertuzzi, it is what it is.
I've played hockey for the large majority of my life as I'm sure other regulars here have. It's just a given that playoff hockey is more hardnosed and you can get away with a little more out there. That inconsistency is what makes NHL playoffs what they are. Exciting hockey. If they want that type of excitement in the regular season, they'll need to reduce the amount of games teams play.. which will most likely never happen.
When they go to 32 teams, the schedule will likely go back to 84 games.
4 games each vs division opponents (28)
3 games each vs conference opponents (24)
2 games each vs non-conference opponents (32)

The lottery will be this Saturday. It takes place behind closed doors but many representatives from the league and teams will attend. Teams are assigned a series of number combinations based on their % of winning the first overall pick. 1001 combinations are possible with 1 causing a re-draw.
This video shows the process during last year's lottery: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=810726

But this might be the first time that the next round starts BEFORE the previous round is finished.
Based on the games listed in 1983, sounds like the previous round game was in the East and started first, and the next round game was in the West and started second.
Today, the second round game has started already, but the first round game doesn't start until 7pm.

We should've kept him because he was a great goalie that costs less than our current f'n goalie. Not really a knock on Miller since he played decent in his two seasons but I can't be the only one that thinks Lu's $5.3m is pretty reasonable now.
Didn't lu wanted out?
He wanted out the moment Schneider started the 3rd game of the Kings series back in 2012. We were down 2-0 and av started Schneider instead. Lu at the end of the playoffs talked about trade.
That was when his Twitter account surfaced and people saw a different side of him. I was pretty pissed about how he handled it. He basically rolled over and be like ok give Schneider the starting role. He didn't even thought about working through the summer and coming back to compete. Where's the competitiveness?

Canucks fans thinking reasonably? Now you're just trolling.

Lu's 5.3 was reasonable the day we signed Miller for 6

I'm still not sure why they gave up on Lu in that Kings series. He played well despite the losses. Throwing an inexperienced Schneider in at that point in the series was an incredible and unnecessary gamble.
:lol
Looks like the Canucks are using up every bit of luck they can muster.

Just a change IMO, anything to get the team going. Not necessarily giving up on anything at all. Team gave up 8g in first 2 games, after lu got the choke label from the cup run the season before. Team gave up 4g in the following 3 games... So the problem was?
I agree lu should have just been the good soldier and competed for the starting job the following season instead of being butt hurt--current lu probably would. But he was a bit of a weird guy back then

Apparently Kessler was banging Schneider's chick which led to their trades.

That's a pretty old rumour. Nothing new there.

When asked why he signed w Vancouver Garteig says it's because he doesn't ever want to play against Brock Boeser again :lol
He also beat Demko in the frozen 4 semis so there's another goalie controversy for you lol

Surprised the Sportsnet NHL draft lottery coverage hasn't started yet, like the huge deal they make trade deadline into.
