seems like bennings hiring is making him a scape goat rebuild/draft good players then step down becoming our head scout.

I hear a lot of talk about heart and good guys. Being nice to the "heart" and "good guys" has not worked out. This shows that Benning does't care about that nonsense. Finally we have someone who will deal people based on cap space and the fact that they are aging rather than how much the fans liked him.

06-30-2015, 03:09 PM
Haha, man, I know it's all because of no-trade clauses and that ish... but at the end of the day, Anaheim has Kesler and Bieksa from us... and we have Bonino and Sbisa from them.
Why are the Canucks always such losers? Love them to death... but man... that's just bad.
You're forgetting $4mil worth of salary cap space. Besides, all you dipshits complain how we need to get younger. Well that's exactly what he's doing. FailFish

i love bieksa for his work on and off the ice to death but in all honesty this isn't a bad trade, bieksa doesn't have many good years left in him (if any, rmb the turnovers last year?)
this gives us a chance to play frankie corrado and our younger prospects more. biekesa gets a chance to win the cup. win/win

Even tho I'm going to miss juice like everyone else has said a 2nd rounder is decent and this is the start of the rebuild and us getting younger which is needed. Can't wait to find out what happens tomorrow but I have a feeling we are going to land a certain dean which is from BC
Canucks are going to suck next season and I look forward to #Tank4Matthews

Some Canucks fans need to chill.

Aging core, many players with NTCs and no prospects in the cupboard. Canucks have enjoyed success for a decade and the timing of where this franchise is now with Edm and Cgy rising sucks, but it's going to happen slowly.
People on Team 1040 are so critical and that's fair game to voice concerns. You have to build the prospect pool first. It's going to take time. Some luck would also be nice (i.e. Hitting on a prospect) that wasn't projected to be a top 6 for example - see Gaudreau.
I see a bad couple of years before things turn around for the Canucks.
This was a necessary move and I hope other guys like Higgins gets moved because he's pretty much filler, while guys like Hamhuis and Edler get moved because they're assets for any team looking to upgrade their D

Real sad to see him go but it was necessary. I hope he wins it all with Anaheim! :(
Canucks are going to get rekt hard this season and perhaps the next 1-2 as well.
I'm glad that we're seemingly moving away from retooling to rebuilding.
This should have been done a couple seasons ago but I'm glad it's finally underway.
We've had our fun with some really good hockey and now it's time for other teams to shine.

Sad to see Bieksa go. He's going to be on the short list of alot of peoples favorite Canucks, but the times are changing. Im actually more excited about the next 2 years than I was about the last few and Im almost not even disappointed if we lose. The next year or 2 are going to be about the small victories of watching the kids develop, and seeing what kind of youth we can bring in. Remember when Tanev just kind of showed up out of nowhere as a solid D, or how Horvat has really developed over the last year, we're going to hopefully get a few of those to look forward to now. Im excited to see the next generation of Canucks develop into the new core. Its like 05-07 again watching Kesler, Burrows, Hansen, Bieksa, Edler, etc all become regulars taking over for the WCE, Linden, Ohlund, Jovo, era.
hi-revs
06-30-2015, 09:53 PM
Canucks are like Calgary a few years ago. It's bound to happen as our veterans age.
We've had a more or less successful last handful + of years. Hopefully Benning and Linden can build a successful next decade.

I'm honestly going to shead a tear when the Sedins are traded or retire, they have been two of the best Canucks ever and have been perfect roll models for the players and in the community. It kinda looks that's the way it's going now and it totally bums me out
PiuYi
06-30-2015, 10:41 PM
I think its much less likely the Sedins and their mammoth contracts get traded, especially at 33/34 yrs old... they're also essential, along with hamhuis, to keep around to mentor the new generation
but like you said earlier, they're gonna get rekt next year which will be tougher to watch than us losing
Age isn't the issue with the Sedins. Their possession style cycle works well regardless of age. The thing that's holding them back from being traded is finding a contending team that is able to take on 14 million in salary per season until the 2018-2019 season.

The guys on the TSN panel make some good points about adjustments that Crosby and Hornqvist need to make in order for help Kessel become a 40 goal sniper.
Kessel is soft as cotton candy. He doesn't like to hit or get hit. Kessel will definitely not go into the corners to get loose pucks. -not a grinder.
That means Hornqvist needs to help Crosby out to get loose pucks.
Kessel likes to score off the rush. Either Crosby will adjust by passing to PK on the fly, or Kessel adjusts his game by just skating straight to the opposing team's net and wait for the pass from no. 87.
He's definitely on my radar in terms of hockey pool picks. :fullofwin:

So who won the Kassian/Hodgson trade?
Buffalo had to buy out Hodgson, at least Canucks got something back for Kassian (Prust) Prust was good for NYR but wanted a lot of money for his contract. Sather (who just stepped down as NYR GM) didn't want to give him it, I would of liked to see Prust stay in NY.

Benning and co wanted Kassian out, I get that. Kassian has on/off ice issues, I get that. But you don't just trade away 24 year old first rounder for an aging NHL grinder. Prust is 31 and has one year left on his deal. He's locked to be traded at the deadline. This trade doesn't make sense and it's an awful trade no matter how you spin it.

I'm actually not too surprised at the low return for Kassian, he has a number of off ice issues and he's now been through what, 5 pro coaching staffs, 3-4 management teams between Vancouver and Buffalo that has been nothing but frustrated with him with his motivational and work ethic issues.
I am surprised Benning had to give up a 5th round pick for Montreal to take him.

I'm hoping Higgins is sent out of town guy has been always useless second half of the season every year!
Also don't forget Grenier will probably get a good look this year which I'm really hoping so! He's a big body has put up points in the AHL and deserves a shot...just think maybe he is suppose to be what Kassian was suppose to be!

Let's have some fun and rank our recent trades
July 1, 2015: Zack Kassian + 5th round pick in 2016 draft for Brandon Prust
June 30, 2015: Kevin Bieksa for 2nd round pick in 2016 draft
June 27, 2015: Eddie Lack for Guillaume Brisebois (66th pick, 2015 draft) + 7th rounder in 2016
Mar 2, 2015: Rasmus Andersson (53rd pick, 2015 draft) for Sven Baertschi
The Kassian trade as I mentioned earlier this morning is mind boggling. Sure he may have a tennis ball sized lump on his back at times but his potential is there and everyone has seen his soft hands and vision. You just don't teach that. Prust is an aging 31 year old with an expiring contract. He's sure as gone at the deadline for picks. Brandon has a good sense of humour though, tweeting about winning a Stanley Cup with his new team. I think he's talking about the new team he's going to play for after the 2016 trade deadline. Trade assessment: C
Bieksa for a 2nd rounder is a great deal, if it was 2015. Some say 2016 will be a deep draft if not deeper than 2015 but the verdict is still out on that one. Benning's job is to rebuild on the fly and do it quickly. He missed out on the opportunity to get a 2nd rounder this year when he was too busy chit chatting with Doug Wilson who turned his back on JB. Trade assessment: C+
Lack deal is beyond underwhelming. To say that Eastern teams don't pay too much attention to players on the West is total BS. JB's job is to market and show our players as a commodity and not a POS. The organization never liked Lack from the start and it shows in the bargaining table when they failed to negotiate much from the deal. Lack has worked hard this off season and from what I'm hearing from Kevin Woodley, he's going to be even stronger next year and his vision will improve with a new neck technique. JB says Brisbebois is going to become a top-4 defenseman on TSN1040 but it won't be until 4-5 years from now until we see him on the roster, if he makes it to the show. Trade assessment: F
Sven Baerstchi deal looked like a steal when the trade happen. Verdict is still out on that one whether Sven turns out to be a top-6 forward. Hard to tell but might take another year or two but it won't be long until we know. Trade assessment: B

Trade Higgins (2.5 mill), Burrows (4.5 mill) and Hamhuis (4.5 mill) and we free up 11.5 mill in cap space on top of the 4.8 mill we have now.
Bring up Baertschi and Kenins to replace Higgins and Burrows
Hamhuis can be replaced with someone on the roster (Edler, Clendening, Weber, Tanev, Sbisa, Bartkowski, Corrado) or a UFA

imo your assesment of both lack and kassian are a bit too high. but most people do this with players from the team they like. kassian is a bonehead player far too often, who doesnt put the effort in, not a good combination. the negatives far outweigh any potential. lack while interesting and a fan favourite is not a sure fire starter, he over commits a lot and seems to have some luongoish issues when getting down early. that klingberg goal in ot really made me doubt his reaction ability and puck following ability

Isn't Kass a UFA next year as well?
I was hoping for an early 2nd for Lack, we got an early 3rd and a 7th. If it wasn't going to be an early 2nd, the best we could hope for is a 2nd next year or an early 3rd this year because it was primarily non-playoff teams that were in the market. A 1st for a pending UFA goaltender with question marks was never going to happen.
Baertschi deal is 100% an A. How many late-2nds even have a shot at the NHL? There are the gems like Subban and Weber but they're extremely rare.
Isn't Kass a UFA next year as well?
No, he's 24. He won't be UFA until 2018 offseason.

Canucks didn't miss out on Bieksa, it's just that the Sharks pulled the plug last minute. Canucks got a decent return anyways. The GM there also has past history with Bieksa as I believe Tim Murray once worked for the organization.
Kassian had it coming... return was shit... but we got SOMETHING.... 1st round draft picks are just a status... its a crap shoot.
I hated the return for Lack, but he's gonna be UFA and not much value as he isn't a bonafide no1. He's ready...but he hasn't walked the walk. Same with Talbot, xept people probably give a shit about NYR than Vancouver...

Thing with lack is, as he is unproven the Canucks probably could have just held on to him, signed him to a value extension, then trade him at the deadline etc.
Not like markstrom had any pull in the situation, what's the difference between losing a disgruntled markstrom for a 4th or 5th rounder than what we got for lack?

I hate the Lack trade, I still kinda do but it is what it is.
If Markstrom can translate his AHL numbers into the 20-30+ games he'll get in the upcoming season that'll ease the pain somewhat
as if i don't hate the leafs enough already. The whole fucking day yesterday they kept coming back to the Kessel trade, and so far today, my feed has been let's look back at the trade.
nobody gives a fuck. Kessel's an overpaid cry baby. Why do you need so many fucking angles on a trade.

Vancouver, BC – Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations, Trevor Linden announced today that the club has relieved Vice President, Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager, Laurence Gilman, Assistant General Manager, Lorne Henning and Director, Player Personnel, Eric Crawford of their duties.
“On behalf of our entire organization I would like to sincerely thank Laurence, Lorne and Eric for their commitment and dedication to the Vancouver Canucks,” said Trevor Linden. “They have been important members of our staff for a long time and made significant contributions to the success of this team. Further still, they are great people and respected members of the hockey community.”
“We have made some difficult decisions to our roster and staff recently after a thorough review of the team,” continued Linden. “These are not easy decisions, nor were they taken lightly. But they’re important as we transition this team and build for the future.”

I'm loving whats happening right now. We've been spoiled by having great teams for a decade now. But the core is stale, management needs a refresh and we need to get draft picks and develop our youth. Hopefully our organization becomes close to what Detroit is right now. Having the youth come in and develop into good and great NHL players.

Detroit is just magic.
Change is great and long overdue...i just hope they have a positive effect or else this will be the late 90's early 2000's all over again.
I'm thinking the Gilman & Henning firing was more to do with a clash of ideas. I can't see a moneyball guy like Gilman approving the Sbisa signing as that type of term and money for him was the complete opposite of what Gilman is typically signing players to.

Sounds like Canucks Jonathan Wall, director hockey ops & analytics, gets a big promotion, to fill in the work of Laurence Gilman.
"As the Director of Hockey Operations & Analytics, Jonathan Wall works with Assistant General Managers, Player Development and Amateur and Professional Scouts on a variety of hockey operations tasks including salary cap analysis and planning, contract analysis, immigration, entry draft, free agency, college scouting, training and development camps as well as any special projects as directed by the General Manager.
Wall began his tenure with Canucks Sports & Entertainment in 1998 as the Scouting Information Coordinator. Previously in 1996, Wall worked as the Equipment Manager for the Vancouver Voodoo roller hockey team. Prior to that, Wall worked with the UBC Varsity Hockey Team as the Team Manager while he completed his degree in Sports Management at the University of British Columbia."

Vancouver Canucks player Daniel Sedin is selling his Vancouver Shaughnessy neighbourhood home, sources tell Vancity Buzz.
The 4,346 square foot residence at 1233 Nanton Avenue sits on a 8,224 sq. ft. lot and is on the market for $5.898 million.
The home, which was listed for sale on Monday, was completely rebuilt in 2006 and incorporates “time honoured craftsmanship.”
According to realtor Matt Pozer’s listing, the two-storey wooden structure home has five bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a giant walk-in dressing room, and four bathrooms.
Adjacent to the main level’s living room and dining room, there is a separate recreation room for crafts and music. More amenity space such as a media room and play room can be found in the basement.
The property also includes a semi-circle driveway, triple car garage, hot tub and custom kids playground.
This can be yours for the multi-million dollar price plus $15,686 in annual property taxes.

Since Henrik has the hart trophy ahead of Daniel on their resume
Daniel has an MVP trophy as well; which one is more valuable depends on if you value the players' opinions or the hockey writers' opinions more.
It's more likely that Daniel Sedin is simply moving as his family has grown considerably over the past several years; now with 3 school-aged children.

Hopefully this means Delorme is going to get his walking papers soon

The way this offseason has gone, Delorme will probably get promoted :heckno:
Snepsts, our western scout, probably the worst western scout in the league, should also be relieved of his duties.

4000+ sq ft is not enough for 5 people? :okay:
Looks like Daniel has moved already - apart from the furniture in the house, there's nothing else (e.g. empty closet).

massive overpayment for both players

I wonder if these overpayments are tied to how much some of the top players are signing for. Toews/Kane getting 10.5 so a player like Saad getting 60% of what they make might seem reasonable in an agents eyes.
A lot of money for those two....
Sabres and Blue Jackets are going to be very good teams within the next couple of years.

O'Reilly's contract is structured pretty unique, annual salary of only 1mil each year, gets everything else as a signing bonus.
https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/617044878145515521
I was hoping for a 6 to 6.5ish cap hit, but I can live with this, guess this is the new numbers in a post cap-circumventing/10+ year contract world where top 1st line guys will be making $10.5 cap hits (Toews/Kane). I'm looking forward to the next few years as a Sabres fan, that center depth of O'Reilly, Eichel, Reinhart, Grigensons, Larsson, I'm sure a couple of them will move to wing though. Will be an interesting/fun mix in the top 6 between Eichel, Kane, O'Reilly, Reinhart, Grigenson, Ennis and Moulson.
Canucks being my second team, I really hope they do decide to go tear it full down to the ground soon and do a full rebuild.

O'Reilly salary is only 1 million. Rest is signing bonuses. Damn...
But if Sabres buy him out, it's only for the $1 mil.
I don't know about full rebuild, Benning did drop the P word (playoffs) the other day.
Another one year signing for the Canucks.

Canucks not so much, but I've grown to accept that we can't do what other clubs do.. Still my favourite team.. just lower expectations so I don't continually get disappointed. Because it hurts. A lot.

That basically makes him impossible to buy out since the cap savings and $$$ savings would be insignificant.
If the Sabres were to buy him out after year 5 of 7, they'd still have a cap hit of $6.833M for years 6 and 7 then a cap hit of $0.333M for years 8 and 9.

Wow that was intense!!
Lack probably would have wanted something around 4M for 4 yrs, not exactly a value or bridge contact. If canucks didn't give him that, then he'd leave as UFA and we wouldn't even get a used jock for him in return.

Good to know we're paying Dorsett and Prust more than what Matthias got.
well when you consider your 4th liner is putting up as many points as matthias did while he was playing 3rd and 2nd line roles..then on top of it sticking up for teammates every game.. can also put up points against teams in the west unlike matthias. im fine with knowing dorsett makes more than matthias. prust i dunno, lots of intensity, good on the pk, bonehead at times

Yah Matthias had his little run with the hat-trick against Boston and whatnot......... but he's just so invisible and it makes it even more frustrating because of his size. He'll continue to get 1 or 2 year contracts for the rest of his career because some team will continue to take a chance on his potential to get angry and play with anything resembling intensity... but he likely never will!

Honestly thought Matthias was our best player for maybe close to a couple weeks. Then recalled a Leaf tried to knock his lid off. It appeared to throw the whole team off a bit with him out for a while.
It didn't really make sense how him and Richardson were so solid on their skates compared to last year. After a couple pints I figured they were both juiced up during the off-season.

Your might be right but he made a nice play in the last game. It was a weird play. You could see Matthias was proud of himself then seconds later Sbisa turned it over. Recalled, was going to just go for a cruise with noticeably less traffic on the streets if the Canucks scored one more. Didn't happen. Sbisa must of had a sore neck or something.

Both Dan Cloutier was hired in 2012 to be a goalie consultant. Not sure what his exact title is now.
And I believe ex Canuck Ryan Johnson is also part of the staff.
Wiki says he is a player development consultant.
Cloutier primarily works with our AHL goaltenders.
Matthias might be the largest guy in the league that has no idea how to throw a body check.
We only had 2 big players for the playoffs; one of them was injured (now traded) and the other one was less physical than the Sedins. I was high on Matthias up until that point.
