If I had first pick of any player in the NHL today to build an NHL team around, it would be Toews. Simply the best overall player in the game the last few years.
Guys like Ovie, Malkin and Stamkos go hot and cold. Others don't have what it takes to be a leader. Toews has everything. The only reason he doesn't score more is because he plays defense and an unselfish team game. The only one that compares is Crosby and even he only has one Cup.
You're crazy if you think Toews is overrated. If anything, he's underrated because people would still pick others over him.

Aquaman probably saw the low sales of the jerseys and other merchandise this past season that he brought up bringing in the skate jersey for 1 night to make back some of the profit.
Would make more sense if the game is against NYR or even the flames.

The Toronto Devils....
Maple Leafs add Jacques Lemaire to coaching staff - Sportsnet.ca (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/toronto-maple-leafs-hire-jacques-lemaire-as-a-special-assignment-coach/)
The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Jacques Lemaire as a special assignment coach, the team announced Friday.
Lemaire has coached 1,262 games (617-458-124-63) in his career split between the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild. The 69-year-old has spent the last six seasons in the Devils organization, most recently as a special assignment coach, where he worked with new Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello. He has some experience coaching beside Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock.
“Obviously Jacques Lemaire has a wealth of experience,” Babcock said in a press release. “We had a great relationship from the 2010 Olympics and I’ve asked him to join our staff to help me and the rest of our coaches within the entire organization be the best they can be.”
Lemaire, a two-time Jack Adams Award winner and Hockey Hall of Famer, won eight Stanley Cups as a player with the Canadiens and coached the Devils to a championship in 1995.
Reports first surfaced that Lemaire could possibly join the Maple Leafs earlier this week. Devils beat writer Tom Gulitti asked Lemaire Thursday if it might be bizarre working for the Maple Leafs since he has such a storied history with the Canadiens.
“I've been away so long that the only guy that is still involved there that I know well is [Canadiens head coach] Mike Therrien and [assistant coach] J.J. Daigneault, who I coached,” Lemaire told Gulitti. “But, besides that. [Canadiens GM] Marc [Bergevin] looks like a real nice guy, but I never really knew him before. I knew him because he was involved with Chicago and as a player, but not personally.”
Lemaire is the newest member of a totally revamped Maple Leafs coaching staff. In June, the team named Jim Hiller, D.J. Smith and Andrew Brewer as assistant coaches.

interesting article...not gonna lie i thought of the whole "Innocent until proven guilty" side but that was covered.
Should the NHL suspend Patrick Kane indefinitely?
Jack Todd: NHL needs to send the right signal by suspending Patrick Kane (http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Jack+Todd+needs+send+right+signal+suspending+Patri ck+Kane/11294493/story.html)
By far the most serious incident, of course, was the one that triggered a rape investigation underway in Hamburg, N.Y., a suburb of Buffalo where Patrick Kane makes his off-season home. That is where a late-night rape allegedly occurred, after a woman and a friend had been invited back to the Chicago Blackhawks player’s home for a late-night party. The accuser says she went into a room, that Kane followed and sexually assaulted her and that, according to unnamed sources, bites were involved in the assault.
Kane has been under investigation for two weeks without charges being filed but the investigation has already had some consequences, including EA Sports banishing the Blackhawks star from its cover. (Once it was Jonathan Toews and Kane together, now it’s Toews alone.)
As usual, the sports world has focused, not on the victim, but on the impact the case would have on Kane and the Blackhawks should charges be filed. Much fuss has been made over the poor Blackhawks, who lost a bundle of talent after their Stanley Cup win and now might have to do without one of their two best players.
Very little fuss has been made over the victim, who if Kane is charged will face the triple whammy: the alleged rape, public hysteria from outraged fans who don’t believe their heroes should be charged no matter what they do — and last and probably worst, a phalanx of expensive legal talent lining up to trash her reputation in court.
Kane has already retained high-profile lawyer Paul Cambria to represent him, a mere taste of things to come should charges be filed.
Other than the initial reports, the only thing that has come to light so far was that Kane’s driver that night was an off-duty cop who saw nothing inappropriate between Kane and the woman in question. But since the driver wasn’t in the house at the time of the alleged attack, that’s irrelevant.
What is not irrelevant is the way the Blackhawks and the NHL react. There are two possible templates involving NHL stars and domestic violence: in the first, the Colorado Avalanche used the “innocent-until-proven-guilty” dodge to stand behind Semyon Varlamov.
By the time the Los Angeles Kings’ Slava Voynov was charged, the social landscape had changed radically due to a single punch thrown by former Baltimore Ravens running-back Ray Rice. That punch, thrown to the jaw of Rice’s spouse, Janay Palmer, might never have caused much of a stir had a video of the incident not emerged. There it was, in grainy black-and-white: the abuse of a woman by a wealthy, entitled athlete, writ large. The wave of public outrage put all sports leagues, the NHL included, under scrutiny.
The NHL took the proper action and suspended Voynov and the Kings were later fined $100,000 for allowing the defenceman to attend a practice. Last month, Voynov pleaded no contest to the charges that he choked, kicked and punched his wife and was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years’ probation.
Investigators in New York State can take their time examining the evidence against Kane but the NHL and Blackhawks, if they want to stay ahead of the curve, cannot. Given the gravity of the potential charges against him, Kane should already have been suspended until this is resolved.
The principal that a suspect in a criminal case is innocent until proven guilty does not apply here. Under section 18-A.5 of the CAB, “the league may suspend the player pending the league’s formal review and disposition of the matter where the failure to suspend the player during this period would create a substantial risk of material harm to the legitimate interests and/or reputation of the league.”
That risk, in this instance, is huge. If charges are filed against Kane, the case will dwarf anything that has come before in the NHL. The league and the Blackhawks have been lucky that all this is going on during cottage season, when the world is paying little attention to events in Hamburg.
All that is about to change, no matter what local officials decide to do. At best, Kane’s reputation is permanently tainted, the myth that he had grown up since his previous brushes with the law now in tatters. At worst, the NHL will have the man who may be its biggest American star in the dock facing a rape charge.
At the very least, the NHL needs to send the right signal by suspending Kane until this is resolved, one way or another. It’s pretty clear the Blackhawks aren’t going to act unless the NHL forces their hand — and the time to act is now.

Why would they suspend him? He hasn't been convicted of anything. He hasn't even been charged?
Not defending him or what he's potentially done but seriously, we have nothing other than accusations. I could understand suspending him if he's been charged but he's just under investigation right now. Where do you draw the line?

another tidbit on slow news day
gonna be interesting to see the new designs that would come from this
Adidas lands NHL jersey deal - Article - TSN (http://www.tsn.ca/talent/adidas-lands-nhl-jersey-deal-1.346839)
The National Hockey League appears poised for radical changes to its team jerseys in the wake of a deal that may pave the way for advertising on team uniforms.
Adidas has won a long-term deal to make uniforms for the 30 NHL teams, beginning in the 2017-18 season.
Adidas takes over from its corporate cousin Reebok, a sports brand owned by Adidas.
For Adidas, the NHL deal is a big, if curious, win. The company beat out rivals Under Armour and Bauer Hockey for the NHL jersey contract, three people familiar with the matter told TSN. The NHL’s deal with Reebok pays the league about $35 million per season, a source said. The new deal with Adidas will see the rights fee double, the source said.
Both the NHL and Adidas declined to comment. A source said the agreement would be formally announced in mid-September. It's unclear whether the NHL will receive a cut of revenue from jersey sales or if it's a straight rights-fee arrangement.
A source told TSN that the deal would surely mean big changes to uniform designs, perhaps with Adidas’s familiar three-stripe trademark being added to some or all team jerseys.
“The NHL might not want big changes like that, but for the money Adidas will pay, they’ll be pretty aggressive pushing to make the NHL jerseys identifiable with their brand,” the source said.
It's believed that Adidas will also produce jerseys for the eight teams that will play in next year's World Cup of Hockey, although that could not be confirmed.
Moving to a new jersey supplier may be a natural transition for the NHL to begin introducing on-jersey advertising, several league sources told TSN.
During a meeting of NHL team presidents in New York last year, league officials estimated they might raise $4 million per team – or $120 million annually – by allowing corporate sponsors to put their logos front and centre on jerseys.
“If you’re already deciding on a major NHL jersey overhaul, maybe with Adidas striping on the jerseys, then it seems like it would be a good time to introduce the ads, if you plan to do it anyway,” a league source told TSN.
Adidas has already been quietly preparing for the new hockey contract. This summer, Edmonton Oilers phenom Connor McDavid filmed a commercial to promote the brand.
Adidas also hopes to feature Sidney Crosby in its marketing plans. Crosby has an endorsement agreement with Reebok that expires at the end of August and his agents have been negotiating with Adidas.
The NHL deal is somewhat curious because it wasn’t too long ago that Adidas said it would move away from league partnerships.
In March, Adidas announced it was quitting its partnership with the National Basketball Association after 11 years. The company said at the time that it would instead emphasize new products and sponsor individual players, Bloomberg News reported at the time.
In 2014, Adidas signed deals with four of the top six NBA draft picks, including Canadian Andrew Wiggins. In June, Nike announced an eight-year agreement with the NBA worth a reported $1 billion.
In 2012, Adidas’s Reebok unit lost the right to produce National Football League jerseys to Nike.
Adidas has struggled to boost its sales in the competitive North American sport market, particularly against dominant Nike.
“America is not a sprint for us, it is more a marathon… we still have a lot of work ahead of us,” Adidas AG chief executive Herbert Hainer said earlier this year on a conference call with reporters.
Adidas’ North American sales fell 7 per cent last year, and the company slipped to third place in the market behind Nike and Under Armour, according to the data firm Euromonitor.
Overall, Adidas has global sales of $14 billion (U.S.) and a global market share of 10.5 per cent, compared to $36 billion and 15.9 per cent for Nike. Adidas has increased its marketing budget by more than 25 per cent, Reuters reported in March, and the company has put a new emphasis on the U.S., the world's top sportswear market.
Investment analysts have speculated for several years that Adidas plans to sell off the struggling Reebok unit.
While Adidas bought Reebok in 2006, Reebok has since been repositioned as a fitness brand, perhaps suggesting its ties to the NHL no longer make sense even if Adidas rejects calls from investors to sell Reebok.
Adidas executive Mark King, who recently ran the company’s golf division TaylorMade, has been tasked with rekindling Adidas’ North American sales.
At an investor day earlier this year King said he wanted to make Adidas “cool” again. The company, which has a partnership with rapper Kanye West, will relocate 75 designers, developers and marketing executives from Germany to the U.S., King said, adding Adidas will run its biggest ever ad campaigns over the next three years.

My optimism and hope died ages ago. I think at this point I'm just glad hockey's back. I gave up being optimistic about the Canucks cus it's been one let down after another. Now instead of, "Oh i'm stoked and really optimistic about the coming season!" it's "Surprise me."
I wouldn't say i'm excited. I'm not optimistic either.
The only exciting part for me will be seeing how the new players fit into and the potential of prospects having good training camps and challenging for roster spot.
The very best thing that can happen this season is a prospect having a break out season. I have very low expectations in terms of winning or making the playoffs. If they somehow turn out a good season and develop some prospects, great! If not, oh well I saw that coming.

Not particularly excited. Realistically, we aren't winning a Cup with the lineup we've got. If there's no shot at a Cup, we're just playing for regular season bragging rights...and that just lowers your draft pick so...not a lot going for the Canucks this season.

IMO, anything can happen when you make it to the playoffs.
One hot goalie, one hot scoring streak, puck luck, injuries. I don't care how many president's trophies you've won, playoffs is a totally different game.
I think we'll be competitive. We definitely downgraded skillwise on paper, but we definitely improved in the work ethic department. We have too many guys who leave it all on the ice every game to tank, for sure. I'll be happy if we make the playoffs, if not, oh well. Can't be worse than watching the latter half of the Torts season or the Keenan era and I managed to live through that (honourable mention to the garbage Nonis brought us; if it weren't for Lu, those teams would've been bottom 5 for sure).

it's the Canucks lol...that anything can happen rule exempts the Canucks, Buffalo, St Louis, Toronto (i might be missing some but you get the gist)
You're better off having nil expectations...especially in the playoffs.
Hell, if this team makes the playoffs i'd be pretty happy already...means something must've gone right.
Puujarvi, Matthews or Tkachuk would be awesome if we blow this season
doubt that's gonna happen though.
I'll be keeping an eye out for Matthews and see how he does under Crow.

It's almost funny how visibly irritated linden sounded on the radio when it was suggested the best way to win is to tank for multiple years to acquire top end draft picks. I for one agree with linden
1) no draft pick is a slam dunk, not even mcjesus
2) Vancouver market will not accept a tank season or three. The bandwagon is already quite roomy despite the team exceeding expectations last year. Seasons ticket waitlist went from ~5 years to none in basically half a season
3) aquaman would never allow a tank season
TL seems content on plodding along as a middling team during these transitional years and instead rely on scouting and player development to back their future success. That's no slam dunk either, and some may even think that's a pretty grim option, but at least it's realistic, maybe

No team purposely tanks and no owner would allow it. Sometimes the fanboys forget this is all a business. And no business sets a plan to purposely lose money.

^ i dunno about that...it's definitely not a common thing but there are exceptions.
Buffalo last year would beg to differ, i'm preeeeetty sure they were tanking on purpose.
There were also few teams in the past that were probably playing tank wars for "generational" talents.

Buffalo did for 2 seasons and the make up for that profit will generate for a decade of playoff hockey and probably a top 8-10 team
If Edmonton accepted bottom feeding team for 10 years why cant us? Because we live in Vancouver and everything needs to be high standards?
We were a top 10 team last year (and every year since '08-'09 except the Torts season). Buffalo tanked to get to where we are now?

The reason why Edmonton can do it and we can't is because Edmonton has true fans and they will show up win or lose... Actually every teams in Canada has true fans that show up to the games unlike the Canucks and the corporate crowd they have...

Average ticket price by Canadian teams:
1. Leafs - $446.25
2. Oilers - $328.33
3. Canucks - $296.56
4. Flames - $264.92
5. Jets - $252.67
6. Canadians - $219.43
7. Senators - $190.08
http://blog.tiqiq.com/2013/09/2013-14-nhl-average-ticket-prices-team/
IMHO, the average price can't be more than $200 if you want anything even resembling a non-corporate crowd at Rogers Arena - even that'll be a stretch.
Expensive cost of living in Vancouver + high ticket costs = corporate crowd
There's just no way around it.

Gotta lose to win
We've always been winning at a steady pace. So sneak into the playoff every year and call it success.
If that's the case we should just get players to win individual trophies. Sedin won back to back art Ross and still no respect for them....
So your telling me..let me get this straight. The owner who has invested millions into the team told the GM "hey lets tank so I can lose money for two years"...yeah fucking right
Yes.
But you're leaving out the part where he can hopefully make boat loads of money for the following decade, win a cup, etc. This is the stuff dreams are built on. It's a risky game they (buffalo) played but now they are full of hope and optimism. Give it 3 years and let's see where they are at. My guess is it won't be that much further along than before they dismantled and blew up the team
If Edmonton accepted bottom feeding team for 10 years why cant us? Because we live in Vancouver and everything needs to be high standards?
Not convinced Edmonton had been trying to tank for the last 10 years in a row. They just genuinely sucked. His many times did oilers fans say "we're going to make it next season just you watch. X that we just drafted will anchor the new dynasty and those guys we drafted the past couple years are due to break out." who knew you needed dmen and a goalie to be an actual decent team

Alfredsson is going to return to the Senators in a role with the team's hockey operations department.
The first order of business for the Sens should be retiring Alfredsson's jersey.
Alfredsson on the verge of return to Senators organization - Article - TSN (http://www.tsn.ca/alfredsson-on-the-verge-of-return-to-senators-organization-1.348862)
Former captain Daniel Alfredsson is on the verge of returning to the Ottawa Senators organization.
A source tells TSN 1200 that Alfredsson is hammering out the final details to accept a role in the club's hockey operations department. An official announcement is expected at some point before the start of training camp next month.
Alfredsson's future with the Senators organization was cast into doubt following a messy divorce from the club in the summer of 2013. After contract negotiations went off the rails with the Senators, Alfredsson opted to sign a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. He retired after the 2013-14 campaign, leaving many to wonder if he would ever return to Ottawa after such an awkward departure.
But the door for Alfredsson's return was opened in early December of 2014 when he officially announced his retirement from the NHL during an emotional ceremony in Ottawa. Following that event, the frostiness between Alfredsson and the organization melted away and the long-time captain was welcomed back into the fold.
He sat alongside general manager Bryan Murray during the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, leading to speculation that he was interested in pursuing a front office job with the club.
Alfredsson told TSN 1200 in June that he was going to spend the next two months in Sweden with his family and would make a decision about his career path at some point during the summer.
Murray has said that 2015-16 will be his final campaign as general manager, so Alfredsson's addition to the front office would provide additional depth for the staff. He has previously stated he would be open to working in a variety of roles in the front office, though it's not clear at this time what his official title will be with the hockey operations staff.
Alfredsson is the Senators franchise leader in virtually every meaningful statistical category, including goals (426), assists (682) and points (1108) and served as team captain for 13 seasons.

Not gonna lie, was never a big fan of Crosby and I've always thought he was overrated but this was a good article.
he seems like a GGG.
Sidney Crosby parks his Chevy Tahoe outside of the Hilton Garden Inn and jumps out. While talking about how dynamic he thinks the Steelers offense will be, he volunteers to help unload camera equipment.
Inside, front-desk staffers begin to gather, wondering whether their eyes deceive them.
“That was Sidney Crosby, wasn't it?” one asks. “My son's going to be so jealous.”
..........
COLE HARBOUR, Nova Scotia
Troy and Trina Crosby sat side-by-side on the same blue couch they've owned for more than a decade. Cards celebrating their son's recent birthday were displayed on the mantle. Photos of their hockey-playing children framed the room.
Now an empty nester and looking every bit the part in capri lounge pants, bare feet and a pair of glasses pushed above her forehead, Trina Crosby seemed genuinely surprised she has spent about one-fifth of her life as the mother of an NHL superstar.
“I think for some people it will always be ‘Sid the Kid,' ” she said. “But it doesn't really stick as much as it used to.”
Ten years into his career, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is no longer a kid. He's a mature 28, celebrating his birthday on the final day of his first hockey camp for kids held to much acclaim in his hometown, at his home rink.
Crosby also is the proud owner of college credits for a World War II history course he completed online last season. He's a philanthropist and has started thinking about his legacy outside of hockey, something he hopes to shape through charity and his foundation.
No longer Mario Lemieux's tenant, Crosby is a homeowner twice over, including lakefront property in rural Nova Scotia that he showed off recently to a Trib Total Media reporter and photographer.
Yet Crosby, the NHL's top earner who pulled in about $17 million last season in salary, endorsements and memorabilia, remains most comfortable in sandals or sneakers, athletic gear and a cap.
“I don't ever want to be seen as a guy who's forgotten where he's from,” said Crosby, who has earned about $75 million in salary alone in his first 10 seasons. “I have an appreciation for the people around here, and that's the best way I can show it, by making sure I stay grounded.”
Crosby may no longer sport that boyish look from when he took the NHL by storm, his every move compared to Wayne Gretzky or Lemieux. His 102-point rookie season did little to temper expectations, but some things remain the same. He still is unfailingly polite, patient and humble — traits he attributes to his working-class hometown of Cole Harbour.
Whether it's playing hockey, performing charity or shopping at the grocery store, Crosby takes nothing for granted. He doesn't like change, and he's not extravagant.
Lunch on that day occurred at Pete's Fine Foods, a Halifax grocery store similar to Whole Foods. The bill was a little more than $10. Around Nova Scotia, Crosby tools around in a 6-year-old Chevy Tahoe. And his biggest recent undertaking outside of the hockey school? Paddleboarding.
“He wants to be one of the guys and doesn't really seek to separate himself or get special treatment in any way,” said Andy O'Brien, Crosby's trainer for the past 15 years. “He takes a lot of enjoyment in the regular, simple things in life and having a normal, ordinary routine.”
..........
Golf clubs and a new pair of hockey pants are in the trunk. Pop music is playing quietly on satellite radio. Crosby has with him a bottle of Fiji water, a banana and a bottle of Aquafina — for mixing amino acids later.
Talk soon turns to how expensive hockey sticks have become.
“I wouldn't know,” Crosby says. “Haven't bought one of those in a while.”
..........
CHARITABLE FOCUS
Crosby had known for a couple of years that he wanted to do something. Only about a year ago, however, did plans crystallize for what it would be.
The Sidney Crosby Hockey School, held Aug. 3-7, welcomed 160 kids to Cole Harbour Place from as far away as Japan.
Instead of making a few cameo appearances, Crosby spent every afternoon on the ice. He also scheduled meet-and-greet time so every camper received an autograph, a photo and a chance for one-on-one chitchat.
“It meant a lot to me to have the hockey school,” Crosby said, “especially to have people come from different places, see Cole Harbour and experience what I did as a kid. It was really special.”
Counselors included NHL players such as Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon. Any proceeds benefitted the Sidney Crosby Foundation, which was started in 2009 and raises money for children-focused charities.
“He's not making money off of it,” MacKinnon said. “I'm sure he's spending money to put it on. Plus, all the proceeds go to his foundation.
“He could have had it in a big city, but he had it right in his hometown. He's such a good advocate for this area. He's always giving back.”
Crosby signed off on every detail and talked Soccer Canada into giving a presentation on the benefits of kids playing multiple sports.
“If he's putting his name to something or involved with something, he wants it to be first class or something you can respect,” said his father, Troy Crosby. “He's very conscious of that.”
Shane Bowers, 16, is Nova Scotia's next up-and-coming talent. He grew up idolizing Crosby, not only for his play but also for how he represents his home province.
“Growing up here, we don't have a ton of NHL guys,” Bowers said. “For Sid to be the best player in the world, come from Cole Harbour and to act the way he does, he's a big role model. Every kid around here looks up to him.”
After winning the Art Ross Trophy in 2006-07, Crosby took his bonus money and donated it to Cole Harbour's youth hockey association. Paul Mason, who coached Crosby in youth hockey and baseball and ran the hockey part of Crosby's camp, used the money to make more than 600 jerseys and repurpose them into travel bags. The money Crosby earned for Canada going undefeated at the 2015 IIHF World Championships went to Halifax Forum. In late July, Crosby and MacKinnon dropped in on Bryan Carroll, a 7-year-old boy with leukemia in nearby Dartmouth. They stayed for more than 90 minutes.
“As you get older, you realize the effect that you can have,” Crosby said. “When you're younger, you don't necessarily understand that quite as much.”
..........
Inside Pete's Fine Foods in downtown Halifax, Sidney Crosby has just finished a make-it-yourself salad, egg whites and orange juice for lunch, consumed around a small table on a publicly accessible balcony overlooking the cash registers.
On his way out, Crosby is offered a sample of a chocolate cookie. He can't resist.
“Now those will get you,” Crosby says.
..........
STUDIOUS SID
Too much writing. That was Crosby's takeaway from his recent college course, which he found through the NHL Players' Association and studied via Southern New Hampshire University.
“I'd call my sister (Taylor) and be like, ‘Do you know how to do a works-cited page on Microsoft Word?' ” Crosby explained. “She had to help me, but it was cool. You interact with other students. Every other student would read your papers. You would read their papers and comment on it.”
The reading wasn't difficult, Crosby said, often being handled on flights or in hotel rooms on the road. The crunch came when it was time to write a paper while Crosby was consumed with hockey.
“The material was easy, because you're traveling and you can read,” Crosby said. “If you have to write a paper and it's not coming that quickly and you don't have that much time, you don't enjoy it as much. You're just trying to get it done.
“It was nine years since I had done anything school-related. It was a pretty big wakeup call.”
Crosby's final exam was writing a paper on the influence of radar in World War II.
“We had a way better radar detection than Germany,” Crosby said.
His love of history and quest for knowledge dates to Crosby's childhood, when he would volunteer at a hospital for veterans where his aunt worked.
“A lot of guys didn't want to talk about (their service) as much,” Crosby said while driving past Citadel Hill, a historic site in downtown Halifax. “But there were some guys who loved talking about it. It was pretty interesting.”
Crosby doesn't know whether he'll take another college course. If he does, it probably would focus on business. What he's more certain about is what he plans to do after hockey.
“I don't know if I want to be involved in the NHL necessarily, but I'd like to be involved in hockey in some capacity,” Crosby said. “I don't think I would want to be a head coach. I don't think I would want to be a GM, at least as of today, but I'd want to be involved in hockey. … I like the developmental side.”
..........
Sidney Crosby admits to being a bandwagon fan for the Toronto Blue Jays, and the question comes up in conversation, asking what year Joe Carter hit his walk-off World Series-winning home run.
“Nineteen ninety-three,” Crosby says.
“That was a good year for Canada,” he continues, also referencing the Montreal Canadiens winning the Stanley Cup in '93.
...........
‘STAY GROUNDED'
Crosby's parents still live in the same-split level house where their son grew up.
It's in suburban Nova Scotia, a few blocks from a shopping plaza where young Sidney would rollerblade if Trina needed him to pick up something for dinner.
The couches remain because, as Trina Crosby explained, “It's hard to find a Chesterfield that you really like and is comfortable.”
“We're creatures of habit,” Troy Crosby said. “If you like something, you stick with it. You don't just change for the sake of changing.”
Crosby's childhood room remains intact, still decorated with Canadiens gear because, as Trina said, “We're not in any rush. We don't really need the space right now.”
About the only thing different are Crosby's dinner requests. No longer does he devour Trina's Shepherd's Pie or meatloaf. These days he prefers only healthy foods.
People often ask Taylor Crosby about her famous brother. She offers the same answer every time.
“I ask someone if they have a brother or sister,” she said. “They say, ‘Yeah.' And I say, ‘It's about the same thing.'
“Once I say that, they're like, ‘Oh, yeah, I guess, but he's really good at hockey, right?' ”
Taylor calls Sidney “an old soul.” He's not on Twitter, wishes he still carried a Palm Treo smartphone and does his own grocery shopping — he loves the idea of finding new, healthy foods.
Crosby's distaste for change has made him the perfect ambassador for his Atlantic Canada hometown, one that's equally as blue collar as Pittsburgh.
Tanya Walker, 28, attended Colonel John Stuart Elementary School with Crosby. She was impressed then but even more so a couple of years ago when Crosby showed up at the gym where she works to film a Reebok commercial.
“He asked all kinds of questions about the gym, how long we were there,” Walker said. “He wanted to know about us, which was awesome.
“I really don't think you could ask for anyone better to represent Nova Scotia.”
Gaetan Tremblay, 49, also of Cole Harbour, met Crosby when the latter was a teenager. Tremblay handles Crosby's equipment and ice procurement during the summer.
At the end of workouts, it's Crosby who returns the nets to storage spots and gathers pucks, Tremblay said. He later told a story of Crosby, early in his career, refusing to drive his car too often because he feared exceeding the lease's miles limit.
“I was like, ‘They might give you double what the car's worth anyway because they can resell it to someone and say, ‘Sidney Crosby drove this,' ” Tremblay said. “But that's the type of guy he is.”
..........
A man is waiting for Crosby outside of Halifax Forum.
Crosby stops and chats for 10 minutes, later explaining the man takes care of the ice there. After Crosby agrees to donate money to the rink, the man wants to discuss with Crosby where it should go.
“That was a good brainstorming session,” Crosby explains.
..........
INTENSE AS EVER
Crosby's summer home, purchased in June 2006, suits him. It's polished but not showy. Located off a dirt road and through two security gates, it's about a 40-minute drive to downtown Halifax, a little less to Cole Harbour.
A stone walkway leads from the back patio to the 14-kilometer lake. It's in a cove, Crosby points out, gesturing toward a small beach area. The water's filled with bass, chain pickerel and trout.
“You can see the chain pickerel coming 10 feet away,” Crosby said proudly.
There are dark hardwood floors throughout and a large, granite countertop in the kitchen with seating for six. There's a sophisticated feel with modern furniture and decorations, yet there's hockey, golf and tennis equipment piled by the door next to barrels of protein powder.
“Being here definitely allows me to get away, be somewhere where I'm pretty comfortable, whether it be with surroundings or the people, that kind of thing,” Crosby said.
The three months or so he spends here every summer might relax Crosby, but that doesn't mean he escapes hockey.
In the largest open area on the main floor, Crosby has a pass-back machine with a stick positioned in front. There's a separate shooting area out back, slightly different from the one he constructed in his Pittsburgh home that perfectly matches his parents' basement — only without the dryer he used to fire pucks into.
This lakefront home has everything Crosby needs and offers all the privacy anyone could want. However, he hardly disappears for weeks at a time.
“It would be pretty easy for him to clam up around here and try to avoid everything,” said Philadelphia Flyers defenseman and friend Andrew MacDonald. “We grab lunch from time to time at Pete's. People approach. He takes it in stride.”
Crosby's memorabilia is confined to the downstairs, a man-cave of sorts where there's a chair made to look like his Penguins sweater and team photos from various levels of his career. No individual accolades are celebrated.
The most striking display is a painting of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final next to an L-shaped leather couch, a not-so-subtle reminder of what ultimately drives Sidney Patrick Crosby.
“He wants to win more Cups,” Mason said. “His focus is still on hockey. He wants his team to win more Cups. And when that (focus) leaves him, he's not going to be playing hockey anymore.”

Ehrhoff was offered the same contract Bieksa signed (5 years, $23M and heavily front-loaded), but Buffalo was offering 10 years, $40M with even heavier up-front payments ($18M over the first 2 seasons with $13M in signing bonuses).
Plus we already had a long-term, front-loaded contract that had us in hot water with the league in Luongo's contract.
It sucked losing Ehrhoff, but it's not like we lowballed him or anything. He took a deal we realistically couldn't match.
As for Torres, his body has completely fallen apart.
Canucks moving to real-time dynamic ticket pricing | The Province (http://blogs.theprovince.com/2015/08/28/canucks-moving-to-dynamic-ticket-pricing/)
The modern age in ticket pricing has come.
Whether that’s a good thing remains to be seen, but know this: if, somehow, there’s high demand for a Canucks game this year, you’re going to pay for it.
We’ve known forever about how ticket scalpers read the market and price their markups accordingly; now the Canucks apparently set to turn modern computer algorithms on their own ticket sales. Prices for single-game tickets will move like they would in a commodities market.

Agreed, Virtanen is a human wrecking ball.
I think what mike oxbig meant that he may not have a long career due to how physical how plays
Nucks are stacked at Center in our prospect lineup.
Not even including Horvat, we have McCann, Cassels , Guance
The latter 2 will probably be 3/4 centers.
Wings are decent with Brock and Virtanen (I hope/think that one of them is RW and other LW)
We need some blue chipper D now.
Franchise Dman dont grow on trees but we can trade/draft for one

Still missing that top line centre though. Hopefully Horvat or McCann can fill in that role.
I think we've been looking for that Franchise Dman for a very long time.

I think he means Jake Virtanen's playing style in Major Jr may not translate over well to the NHL.
Similar to Gilbert Brule, a high level prospect that could play a pretty physical WHL game but became injury prone once he tried doing the same in the NHL.
Brule, drafted at 5'10" 180 lbs, currently listed at 5'11" 187 lbs at age 28 ... Is comparable to the physical freak of nature that is Jake Virtanen? :fulloffuck:
Virtanen already proved he can physically dominate in the AHL playoffs, absolutely demolishing veteran players ... At age 18 ...
Here's 6'3" 221 lbs Brian Lashoff stepping up on Virtanen to deliver a hit and Virtanen sends him flying instead.

Virtanen is hardly a physical freak of nature. At 6'1 207lbs, he's essentially the NHL average. It's a bit premature to call a guy proven when you're assessing him based on a sample size of 10 AHL games.
Virtanen is hardly a physical freak of nature. At 6'1 207lbs, he's essentially the NHL average. It's a bit premature to call a guy proven when you're assessing him based on a sample size of 10 AHL games.
You're all over the map here.
First of all, the NHL average for forwards is 6'1" 197 lbs. Virtanen is listed (literally on this page) at 6'1" 212 lbs ... At age 19 ... Was drafted at 6'1" 208 lbs (source: CHL top prospects fitness testing) ... 15 lbs heavier than average and still growing ... Not that weight necessarily = strength ...
Pre-draft scouting report:
Loaded with some of the best physical tools in this year's entire class. He's a tremendous skater with speed, balance, terrific agility for a big man, and an explosive initial burst. Also has a rifle shot with a lightning release. Has the size to drive through defenders, but needs to use his size to better advantage.
And this past season, he took his physical game to another level.
Secondly, you're comparing him to Gilbert Brule, who was 5'10" 180 lbs and 8.5 months older when drafted ... Who matured at an early age and barely gained any mass over the years. That's a 3", 28 lbs difference not to mention that Virtanen is also faster and stronger than Brule was (check the fitness test results).

I'm basing my information as per the Globe and Mail's 2013 numbers of 6'1.3 ft tall, 203.7lbs (NHL teams bigger, younger than a year ago - The Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/globe-on-hockey/nhl-teams-bigger-younger-than-a-year-ago/article14660704/)) and comparing it to Jake Virtanen's Eliteprospects profile.
Virtanen is listed as 6' 1" 208lbs on NHL.com as well.
Utica Comets website: 6' 1" 207lbs,
Vancouver Canucks website: 6' 1" 208lbs.
I never compared Brule and Virtanen's size. Mike Oxbig said "Virtanen might be a fragile player the style he plays" and I compared it to Brule's playing style. He wasn't afraid to play the body in Major Jr but playing the same style in the NHL caused him to get hurt.
You have to take those combine results with a grain of salt. The first part of the article shows the results from the top performers at the 2010 NHL scouting combine: Scouting Combine blog - 2010 NHL Draft Combine presented by Reebok (http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=530023)
Recognize many names? Exactly.
Until Virtanen actually plays a game in the NHL and starts manhandling other players it would be an overstatement to call him a physical freak of nature.

Lol yeah, saw that but same with what everyone says. Canucks see something in him and if he can step it up and have a good training camp this year, he's got a good chance of sticking in Utica and being one of the first names for call-ups
I think we've been looking for that Franchise Dman for a very long time.
I swear the season we get a Norris Dman is the season we win the cup. Semisrs.
that just makes no sense. he'd be in the ahl or echl as a prospect, if he develops can be added as part of a trade, find a spot on the roster down the road etc. especially considering utica needs an offensive centreman..

i was trolling about the undersized part and the Tigers Alumni project part in case you haven't noticed. I think he'd be a low risk addition as well based solely on point production. But i guess the scouts know something we don't, hence no contract and no invites. Not everyone can be Tyler Johnson.
Probably right about Fox...lol, the guy wrecked it in Junior as an overager then proceeded to get rekt in the pros. Still, i don't think it's too late. A good training camp/preseason can make all the difference on how his season will play out.

I expect him to cash in at 10M ala Toews/ Kane (who is btw innocent until proven guilty. The girl most likely just trounced on the situation to be a 'victim') or slightly below 10M with and reupping with the Kings. They cant fill his void

Los Angeles will never let Kopitar walk. Lombardi hardballs the shit out of his players but he'll eventually cave and Kopitar will get an 8-year, $84M contract.

Everyone is saying that we should go after Seabrook, but the one guy I'd love to have would be Byfuglien. He can play F/D, has a wicked shot, and has a huge physical presence.

If Hamhuis doesnt get injured and plays effectively as a shutdown D and Vrbata has around 20 goals during the trade deadline I could see them going for picks and high level prospects
but after this off season...i'm almost certain Canucks will find some way to get ripped off or fuck up the deal

I'm excited to see the young guys play.
I'm not completely sold on him yet. He's growing on me and the fact that he earned Travis Green's trust rather early on is encouraging.
I compared him to David Booth (pre-decapitation by Mike Richards) ... 30-30 player who has elite skating, a wicked shot, and plays physical. I think he's demonstrated that he's more physical than Booth already and he probably has a better shot, so maybe he's got a bit more potential than that. I still worry heavily about his tunnel vision and hockey IQ, though. If he doesn't develop in those areas, we may end up with a Jason Chimera type player.
Hopefully he gets traded out of Calgary to a good program like Kelowna to further his development (assuming he doesn't make the team out of camp). I strongly dislike Mark French as a coach.
On a purely selfish note, I'd love it if he got traded to the Royals. Dave Lowry loves players like him (look how his son plays for Winnipeg).

It is not absurd to think a lot of those players will sign new contracts with their current team.

The team is having a "#20in20" schedule to celebrate 20 years at Rogers Arena.
The West Coast Express is re-united on December 7th just before the Buffalo game. Naslund, Morrison, and Bertuzzi. :smug:

Vancouver, B.C. – The Vancouver Canucks announced today the 2015.16 season schedule of events and themes for #20in20; the 20th anniversary celebration of Rogers Arena. The first of 20 special game nights begins opening night with a look back at the original opening night, on October 9, 1995, when the Canucks moved downtown, the Grizzlies were born and the world’s biggest acts landed a new destination.
The #20in20 celebration includes a selection of marquee nights with special guest appearances in addition to themed game nights honouring unique moments in Rogers Arena’s rich history. Marquee #20in20 nights include a reunion of the West Coast Express Line on Monday, December 7th versus Buffalo and the return of Markus Naslund, Brendan Morrison and Todd Bertuzzi to Rogers Arena. Grizzlies Night on Monday, November 2nd vs Philadelphia is another special evening when fans can wear their Grizzlies colours alongside Canucks jerseys with pride and celebrate Vancouver’s former NBA team. And already confirmed, ’95 Retro Night welcomes back the Canucks skate logo, black jersey and uniform for one game only on Saturday, February 13th versus Toronto.
The Saturday, October 10th home opener is significant not only for the launch of #20in20; it’s a must attend game because of the annual ‘Jerseys Off Our Backs’ event for fans. ‘Jerseys Off Our Backs’ offers every fan in attendance the chance to be selected and join Canucks player’s on-ice postgame to receive a personally signed, game worn jersey.
You can join in on the #20in20 fun by participating in an interactive, fan-driven bracket challenge. By casting a vote for your favourite experience you’ll help determine the favourite fan moment in Rogers Arena history. Details will be available at Canucks.com/20in20.
A complete #20in20 schedule of marquee nights and themed games is listed below.

Yeah, I remember back in the day when the WCE had a set up play on the PP that worked very well. Nazzy would make a hard wrist shot at the opposing goalie's pads. Bert would be in front of the net to wait for the puck to rebound from the goalie's pads so that he puts the puck into the net.
PP% during WCE era: 18.1%
PP% from '08-'09 to '12-'13: 20.3%
