I'm torn too. What I see thus far is:

Fat:
-proven reliability
-Linux abilities

Slim:
-small form factor
-supposedly quieter
-bigger HDD
-"low maintenance" finish

I'm gonna wait til the full Slim reviews come out, ie a teardown and full list of what was dropped from the Fat, but thus far I'm leaning slightly towards the Slim if it proves to be as trusty as the Fat

LOL perhaps see you there

YiNG_YaNG_6o4 08-18-2009 11:08 PM

i think the old PS3 still looks better when you stand it up.

rickross888 08-18-2009 11:34 PM

i don't really like the look of the new ps3 but hmm...at $299 i'm thinking of buying the new slim ps3 and putting it in my room so I don't have to go all the way downstairs to play it haha. such a hassle to carry that huge thing up and down the stairs and plugging everything in and out.

underscore 08-19-2009 12:22 AM

^ get extra cables and leave them attached?

x2krazi3 08-19-2009 12:52 AM

Right now futureshop selling the fat ps3 for $299 as well, darn can't decide which one I should get.

they always do shit like that. it really bugs me. it makes ppl who bought it early feel screwed over. although a new slim design would be kinda cool. the ps3 weighs about 11lbs right now lol. one reason i didn't bring one back from HK. didn't wanna lug that thing around

how did the ppl who brought it early feel screwed over? only the original 20/60GB owners have a full featured PS3

hotjoint 08-19-2009 06:58 AM

No regrets about buying the 60 gig. I'm not even considering buying the slim because its "cool". I would only buy the slim if I never purchased a ps3. I have a ton of ps2 games so backwards compatability was a big reason why I got the 60 gig.

the slim one has 45mm cell instead of the 60(?) and/or the 90mm cell in the fat ones, which produce less heat.

q0192837465 08-19-2009 08:24 AM

slim cuz of the higher resale value. Seriously, in 3-4 years, the PS3 wil become obsolete, so why get one that will dimish in value more.

Just like why would u get a pre-facelift model when u can get a facelift model at the same price.

wouwou 08-19-2009 08:30 AM

^resell value doesn't matter when the price mark for PS3 hits 299.

At BEST you can get another $10 when you are selling the console 3 years down the road.

underscore 08-19-2009 08:30 AM

^ that's only if you ever plan on selling it. I'd keep mine as a bluray player if nothing else.

true, the main thing the fat has going for it is its proven reliability. though I don't think Sony would botch it up and build a POS now

hotjoint 08-19-2009 08:39 AM

Sony isnt gonna make another console for atleast 5 years and you wont be able to make that much more off it. I'de say $50 max. Plus I don't plan on selling mine.

Renxo 08-19-2009 08:48 AM

Do you guys think the slim will sell out fast? Like the Wii shortage in the past?

Ironically, I had to take my 40G back to MTC in Coquitlam for repair twice within one year, once for burnt out BD drive, 1 month after purchase, another time for loud fans, 6 months in.

Now my 40G is louder than my refurb 360 from 07 5 mins into BD movie watching.
