Angel Cafe

7/10

The Eatery
http://www.theeatery.ca/

Fake Japanese food that tastes like crap with little lighting to see that what you are eating doesn't even look good. Some of the menus smelled like barf. Worst of all it was double the price of actually decent Japanese food that I could have bought anywhere else.

If I wanted to go to a club to listen to loud music I would go to a club, not a restaurant with overpriced crap food. I don't see why this place was so crowded.

2/10

Would you pay: $34 + HST + forced tip = $42 for this entree - two tiny rack of lambs (when the waiter assured that it would be a 'good size'?)

All my friends had equally bad experience. Hard to tell from the photo just how small these pieces were. Also, you get virtually no vegetables. Extra dinner rolls cost $2? Crazy. I've learned that a quality dining experience involves someone else doing the cooking for you. LOL.

So they have a mandatory tip for NOT cooking your food?

Hey LiquidTurbo, how come you were forced to pay tip at StoneGrill?

Was it because you were in a party of 8+ ?

I must also agree that Stone Grill licks balls, I'm surprised they're still in business and opened another location at Metrotown where Ricky's used to be.

We had a party of 6. Still... I wasn't expecting it...mandatory tips is always brutal. Tips is a privilege, not a right to the server. The server was a complete clown anyway.

suzuka84 10-18-2010 08:40 PM

anyone else notice the restaurants on commercial drive starting to suck?

I ate dinner at Havanas and don't remember the food tasting so normal

A service charge for only 6 people is rediculous.

I was at a restaurant a couple weeks ago where they had a 20% service charge on 8 or more, and I thought THAT was a low number to be charging the service charge on, Especially because half the tables in the place were fit for 8 people.

A&W
Sausage & Egger
4/5

my top pick out of all the fast food breakfast sandwichs

Senna4ever 10-19-2010 05:07 PM

A gratuity for just 6 people is stupid. I would short pay the bill - say the service wasn't worth the 15% or 20% tip. They really have no legal recourse.

mako 10-19-2010 05:09 PM

I've only ever seen the automatic gratuity with groups of like 12+ people

Most restaurants on Commercial Drive suck, either the food, service or both.

Alar 10-19-2010 10:50 PM

Man, I thought it was just me but for the longest time, I could not pull myself together to eat anywhere on The Drive.

BT Cafe, on Kingsway in Vancouver.

I initially thought that the food portion was small, but I still got pretty full in the end. Flavour of the food is there.

The place (or at least area) looks hella shady though but it does get busy.
Pretty cheap, with all day menu for $6.50 honger food.

8/10.

Roundtable pizza

10/10

Just had the chicken jalapeno pizza at roundtables and it is fucking delicious.

New Bohemian 6.5-7/10

Drinks were awful, but they do make caipirinhas with cachaça. Food and server was good though, actually surprised by the service especially since it was so busy. I liked the mussels with the fennel white sauce. Parallels chain quality but with lousy and noisy music.

TRDood 10-22-2010 11:47 PM

Hapa on Robson = 2/10

I'd say the food have a identity crisis. It's just not right.. With too many mixed flavours.

Goamme - spinach puree with random veggies? 1/10
Bbq udon - messed up flavours 2/10
Duck nigiri - interesting combo 7/10
Tuna and corn roll - another gimmick roll - 1/10
Sablefish - pretty good 8/10
Green tea parfait - nasty shit 0/10

Whoever said they got hot servers... They are good looking but nothing spectacular, like the ones straight out of Aritiza.

I think they are trying too hard to blend white food with japanese food = no good.

Anyonr else?

Cactus on Broadway (Ash)

Food 8/10
Service .5/10

Wasn't even that busy, the tables around us with other servers got their food/drinks/bill faster than we did, and we got in 20 minutes before them.

Supafly 10-23-2010 11:25 AM

Naan kuu <---- I think thats how you spell it...on Alexandria in Ditchmond.

On average of all the times i have been here,

Food - 8.5 / 10
Service - 7.5 / 10

When you're craving real japanese food at midnight, I come here. A bit loud and obnoxious when you have drunk patrons in the back as the venue is small...but the food and service always makes up for it. Quality of food is always fresh, and the price isn't all that expensive.
Our bill came to 45bux for latenight snacks without any drinks for 2.

Meowjin 10-23-2010 12:18 PM

the only good place on commercial is santa barbra and for their deli cuts, and portoguese buns.

nack 10-23-2010 12:19 PM

a bit off topic, but anyone know of any places where they serve real poutine?

knight604 10-23-2010 12:54 PM

Taiko sushi on Denman.

Went for the AYCE at lunch time (before 4 pm.) for $13.95. Way better than your average AYCE and it also had sashimi which was actually pretty good.

8.5/10

cowncow 10-23-2010 01:36 PM

I ate at...

Seasons in the Park @ Queen Elizabeth with my girlfriend...

Gave it 9/10.

Not the perfect restaurant, but close to it for a nice night out. Everyone's very friendly and talkative there, except for that one bitch in the front taking coats.

Food was real good. Try the stuffed mushrooms if you're gonna go!

mako 10-23-2010 02:55 PM

Cattle Cafe
7/10
