Mon Mom's Cafe in New Westminster for bfast. Unpretentious trucker-cafe-style diner that serves chinese food too. Got all this for about $16;

-2 eggs, 2 slices bacon, 2 french toast, pan fries
-2 eggs, 2 sausages, 2 blueberry pancakes, pan fries
-side bacon (4 slices)
-2 slices toast (one white, one brown)
-unltd coffee

Not crowded. Great friendly service. I would go again in a heartbeat. 8/10

E Tea usual place

The Pink Peppercorn
A solid and well-deserved 9/10.

mk1freak 11-23-2010 09:55 PM

karasu sushi in north vancouver, small sushi joint

spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll, spicy chopped scallop roll, dynamite roll, and california roll 4 pieces of salmon sashimi and 4 pieces of tuna sashimi with tea and miso soup
came to around 25 bucks,

quality ingredients, and super nice old japanese dude who owns and makes the sushi fresh.

i rate it a definite 9.5/10 (he loses a half point for not carrying ginger ale!)

It would have been a 10/10 if I was there.

one of the best things about working in non-profits is that the kitchen in the housing centre i work at (with a emergency homeless shelter) is it runs a culinary training program(for individuals who are at -risk of being homeless or those who are just getting back onto their feet from being homeless), learn the skill to get employed in the industry(this is a free program though by referral only). where the skills they learn (food they cook) goes on to feed, 3 times a day, the individuals who access the shelter services. The fellow who runs it was the same fellow who started up the culinary training program for the Art institute.
a sample of the meal they made tonight was:

curry and herb marinaded chicken served on a bed of rice, with blanched cauliflower/broccolli, with a fresh pineapple pureed sweet and sour sauce.:

service in action:
http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/803/dsc0122iv.th.jpg

The advance class made this tonight:
duck confit in canneloni with ricotta cheese and parmesan
http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/1...c0116md.th.jpg

last night the advanced class made:
stuffed quail breast, and sliced duck breast on rice with sesame oil grilled green beans
pictured here me eating the plate lol
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/6...c0115io.th.jpg

while of course the people who are guests in the shelter eat for free, staff only have to pay 3 dollars a plate for dinner, 2 dollars for lunch...with all proceeds going back into running the culinary school.

mind you that of course that the housing centre is the only one of it's kind in north america that has a culinary training school as part of a housing centre (emergency shelter) so the food that is served at work is a step above what the other shelters would be serving. lucky me :)

$9.99 for dinner

+$1.99 for the beverage bar. wtf is this shit? i gotta pay for pop? Shouldn't it be included already in the price? Thats fucking bullshit

Food wasn't great. The steak was ok, taco bar was shitty. Selection was pretty crappy. The worst was the pizza...i could of made a better one at home.

I shoulda went to get another McRib.

Yuu Japanese Tapas

Service 5/10
Food 6/10
Atmosphere 6/10

Although service was not rude and the servers are nice, it was slow and unattentive. . One dish came ICE COLD. Wasn't cooked properly. Quality of food wasn't worth what we paid. Although not an expensive restaruant, I wouldn't go back.

Purely 11-27-2010 08:28 PM

Shabusen at Grandville 8/10
service wasn't that well tonight

Not really racist! 11-27-2010 09:58 PM

Sushi Garden - 7 / 10... service still lacking.. wasn't busy either

mako 11-27-2010 10:02 PM

Ken's

les faux bourgeois

STARTERS
Pork pate for 2, came with mustard and pickles, i didn't really like the idea that you are supposed to eat this with bread. (We were served bread in the beginning, then you eat this with more bread, so you'll get pretty full) rich tasting, pretty good though 8/10

Qualicum scallops - 2 twoonie sized scallops baked with cheese, not much to comment, 7/10

French Onion soup - the menu description sounded good, it actually had little pieces of shitake in it too, not enuff cheese on top, very bland, needed way more salt or msg lol 6/10

Steak frites - hanger steak , pretty tough, fries were good, red wine jus was well done. 7.5/10

Beef tenderloin - way juicier and tender, served with scalloped potatoes and veggies, 8.5/10 (this was the same price as the hanger steak, i should have ordered this as well as ternderloin is a more expensive cut)

This was shared between me and my fiance, for the price its very good value for french food. I would say its CHEAP actually, all entrees were under $20, appetizers were from about $7-$14 i think.

been meaning to go there

reservations recommended?

Alphamale 11-28-2010 11:30 AM

^Yes sir.

BlackZRoadster 11-28-2010 11:51 AM

yes i would recommend reservations anyday, the place is quite small, and there isnt a waiting area if you want to wait, you'll probably end up leaving if you needed to wait

Ch28 11-28-2010 02:28 PM

+1 for Les Faux Bourgeois

It's a great place to take your date because of the small size and atmosphere. You don't want to show up without reservations cause you'll end up waiting outside in the cold for a table.

Pork belly beer house - 7/10

AYCE pork belly, korean style. AYCE soup, rice, pop, pork belly, and side dishes for $15 (or $14 after 9pm). We only had 3 plates of meat between 2 of us so in hindsight we probably should have just gotten the regular 1 plate. The restaurant is a bit dirty but overall I like the atmosphere - it's very casual and feels like you're in a restaurant in asia. It's very greasy so it's probably not something I'd wanna eat often but I'd definitely go back.
