My money is on no.

if all you needed was ONE great skill to make it into the nhl, there'd be a ton of 35 year old beer leaguers playing on the back end and making $800,000+ a year.

for one day, i would love to see people like you strap on the gear and have a skate with even the WORST nhler just to see how incredibly talented they are.

+1

Hell, not even the WORST nhler. I'd like to see these guys go up against WHL throw-backs.

While I agree with you, I have to say Sami Salo is the most overrated Canuck. The man is injury-plagued, and while his slap shot is fast, it's very erratic in its aim. I'm actually tired of seeing him play the point on the 1st unit PP, but I guess we have no one else.

And you can't really say anything good about Salo apart from being a steady stay at home D man when he's not injured.

Hondaracer 10-20-2008 09:22 PM

Salo hasnt had "The Shot" for the last 3 seasons..

and u guys are 100% right about skating with NHLer's, I play in DIV 4 in the ASHL which is actually pretty good, almost everyone on our team has played hockey their whole lives and everyones pretty good

and there's 3 more div's ahead of us..DIV 1 = ex-junior players and NHL rejects, they are fuckin crazyyyy good, could hammer surrey eagles etc.

Ch28 10-20-2008 11:15 PM

I still cannot believe we re-signed him knowing how fragile he is :ugh:

lol. i played with an ex-ECHL player a few years ago. he was out of league for 3-4 yrs. but damn...he was freaking good. he may have been overweight, slow, missed the net half the time, but everytime he hits the net, the goalie be fishing it out. at the end of the game he would still end up with 5-6 PPG average. it was freaking awesome:haha:

i think junior B players are better than 90% of the guys in these leagues

He was re-signed well before he started getting all the injuries, and while he was playing REALLY REALLY well... for well below his market value, too - he gave us a discount to stay here. If we hadn't signed him at that rate, the fans woulda been screaming blue murder.

and what would that prove?

Everybody knows how difficult it is to be in the NHL and how much talent you need to be anywhere near that level. So what? The guy was just stating his opinion based on what he sees. It's just a game. One that would not exist at that kind of level if fans didn't give a shit and support it by watching it closely and paying for it - one way or another.

Again, nobody was doubting the level of play. We all criticize. Without criticism, there would be no standard.

that a professional athlete is better at his given sport than a 150lb internet gamer

Apparently not EVERYONE realizes what it actually takes, given some of the BS spewed by armchair players on this and almost every other forum (and that goes for ALL sports-related forums, regardless of the sport).

Doesn't mean it's an intelligent or particularly valid opinion.

Giving a shit doesn't automatically make one worthy of making comment.

Wow, that's pretty weak. "My opinion matters, regardless of how idiotic it is, because it sets a standard."

Now see, there's the same prejudice - just as you admonish the gamers for underestimating the athletes, you now underestimate the gamers. Come on, 150 pounds? No gamer worth his salt would come in an ounce under 250.

All our opinions matter. Yours included. Plus, those weren't my words. I think you take things too literally. Read it again.

I went to HSBC yesterday in hopes of picking up those pocket schedules and calendars they were giving out last year. They didn't and won't have any this year. I know there's one you can print out on the Canucks' web site, but would like to have the real one. Does anyone know where else I can pick one up?

hotjoint 10-21-2008 07:55 AM

Still early in the season guys. No need to worry

+1. And I'm not expecting much out of these guys. In fact, I would be pleasantly surprised if they make it past round 2 if they make it to the PO.

So far, they've already exceeded my expectation. Win or lose, it's good to see a hockey team play with hockey passion again. Led by the likes of Burrs, Kes, Mase & Hansen. God I can't believe how much I miss this kind of hockey.

Gaborik is already being shopped around.

Would you take him if you were the Canucks?

Hondaracer 10-21-2008 08:51 AM

^ he won't be traded to a division rival.

Pettinger claimed off waivers by Tampa

hotjoint 10-21-2008 09:05 AM

If the Canucks were interested, I'd take Gaborik over Sundin. younger, more potential and cheaper. Let see what happens.

murd0c 10-21-2008 09:07 AM

So do we get anything for pettinger getting claimed?
