Do you think Ryan will be making more than Getzlaf and Perry with 5.3mil cap hit? I think not.. My guess is he signs for around 4 mil

411ken 03-19-2010 10:23 AM

Isn't Bobby Ryan a few years younger than these guys? by the time he gets to these guys' age, I see him making 5+ as well.

Didn't Phil Kessel sign for 5m as well? now that's a bargain for the laffs.

That is TRUE but it can also work both ways...as he can also go on the decline....and get stuck with 5mil cap for a few years.

I highly doubt that would happen as I see Kes as a hardworking player but anything can happen.

Ryan Kesler has broken away from the likes of Pavalski and Backes, the numbers and defensive game shows it, its more like Pavel Datsyuk nowadays minus the godlike hands

like me and a friend were saying like 30 games ago, at this point in his career I wouldn't trade kesler for kovulchuck, he has the heart and determination you want in your upper echelon players and he's also the type of guy who never takes a game off, players like these are invaluable

And saying this is too much too early is kinda stupid IMO because a contract like this was the only way to keep him long term at a reasonable rate, if we had signed him to a 2 year deal and he continued to progress at the rate he is there is no way your getting him for 5 at the end of that contract

True, if he were for anything less, it wouldnt be the same 2yrs later. We all know what kind of work ethic he has. Last night showed it after being cut for icetime tuesday

Im a little iffy on the 5per for 6, and i really hope he proves me wrong.

Is that what your crystal ball is telling you? Don't forget, Bobby Ryan is 23 while Kesler is 25. Bobby Ryan is on the top line and will continue to produce points. When Kesler was 23, he was only making $1.75 M.

Comparing Ryan and Kesler is like comparing apples to oranges. Give him a few more years, and then you can compare them.

Pavelski and Ryan are both due for a raise as was Kesler before he signed his contract. It's like saying, why is anyone worth what they're making if Stamkos has a $3.7 mill cap hit on his rookie contract? It just doesn't make sense to compare contracts like that when the player is bound to get a huge raise.

Both Pavelski and Ryan will get a contract in the $4+ million range which is in line with what Kes will be making but I guarantee those two don't mean as much to their team as Kesler does to the Canucks.

where was the price cut he was talking about?

non existent. mehhh whatever, accept it, be happy, and hope he continues this pace for the next 6years, then it be worth the money. Hes been a consistent 20goal guy.

Pavalski is an amazing hockey player

fobulaus 03-19-2010 11:24 AM

My point is I highly doubt guys like Pavelski/Ryan would be making 6 mil a year on the next contract, hence making Kesler's 5 mil contract a "pay-cut". Like I said before, Kes signed at market value at the very best, I'm just saying there wasn't any discounts.

Sure, someone brought up Kessel. Do you think 5.4mil with the Leafs was a pay-cut too?

Alright fine, Bobby Ryan wasn't the great example. How about guys like Loui Eriksson and Nathan Horton? These guys have slightly better production but obviously don't have the same intangibles Kesler does... But still, would you pay these guys 6 mill a year?

shawn79 03-19-2010 11:39 AM

kesler = american mike richards

invader 03-19-2010 11:53 AM

^ Richards has better hands.

But character wise similar.

411ken 03-19-2010 11:57 AM

At the end of the day, we can debate on this for days and still the same shit.... all pressure will be on him now and hope he keeps it up..

haha hey in his defence he did back peddle after he made that statement publicly.

Burrows probably feels ripped off now lol

punkwax 03-19-2010 12:03 PM

I'm not surprised that Kes would get the 5M he wanted after the Olympics. Too bad for us he didn't take his own advice but I think his head is a little swollen right now, so maybe he thinks he did.

For me, this all comes down to playoffs now. If he can elevate his game even more, score some clutch goals as well as be a force defensively, he's worth his 5M.

I think it's a good signing. I would have liked it much more if he did take a huge discount his value skyrocketed after the Olympics. 2-way forwards that can put up points are hard to come by. Selke winner this season? :p

Both of these players are so crutial to their respective teams. Points are on par but Datsyuk has played fewer games.

who knos, this Selke thing is a gong show anyways. Kesler winning the Selke this year wont mean much since Datsyuk hasnt really been that strong. It be a great addition to his growing glorious career tho.

the truth is, Kesler has excelled his peers in the likes of Joe Pavalski and David Backes, who someday will also compete for that Selke

I keep bringing those two up is because they are all very similar players at the start of their careers

FUCK YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!

Not really racist! 03-19-2010 02:57 PM

My next jersey was going to be a Kesler but I was reluctant because I wondered if he was really going to take a paycut and stay in Vancouver. Didn't necessarily take a paycut but I'm still happy we locked him long term. Looks like I'll be picking one up soon

And this happens.. on the day I lose my debit card -_-

the way the chips were falling last season in the playoffs I got really worried they were going to go all the way.

this season, they have no problem scoring from multiple lines despite the early perception it would be an issue. so that's good. i'm not sure what luongo's numbers are but the number of times he's been pulled this season, especially lately, can't be good. maybe give him a little rest an hope he comes back playing hot in time for the playoffs. they are a solid team and will go deep if things go right. I guess its more a question of how the other teams are looking. chicago shouldn't be as tough as the were last season now with all the injuries and not having khabibulin. would you rather face Detroit or Calgary at this point, both fighting for 8th? sharks look the same as every year. as for the yotes, preds, avs, and kings: all wild cards (and who would have guessed they would be were they are). they could be dangerous or they could go nowhere. oh and If i'm wrong, please excuse me, i'm not a canucks fan. I just watch the odd game.
