Maybe just where you got it from? The ones I got from Stevenson and also today from T&T were decent in size, definitely not small.

My neighbour works on a boat doing emergency response related stuff. He's caught me a bunch this year while they are out doing training or just patrolling.
Otherwise I prefer to use sidestripe shrimp to spot prawns. Not as large or impressive. Equally delicious.

Thanks for the tip on the sidestripe shrimp!

Spot prawn season yet again, and yet again people subtle flexing posting their spot prawn meals all over their Instagram.

If you ate spot prawns and didn't post it on social, did you really eat spot prawns?

westopher 05-20-2021 08:01 AM

At the current prices I’ll be getting Alaskan king crab instead.

If you didn't post your vaccination on IG then you clearly didn't get it, either.

Anyone not really into Spot Prawns and find the texture kinda....weird? Dunno, I just prefer Tiger Prawns and don't really understand the hype behind it every spring.

The "norm" that I see seems to be in the $19 - $20/lb range this year for live ones?

I've seen as low as $13/lb, but those are for non-live and non-frozen ones.

TOS'd 05-20-2021 11:31 AM

Just the beginning of the season, but I saw $39.99/lb at a local (ON) T&T on the weekend. RIP.

That's what you get for following bcrdukes.

Metro Tnt is at 19.99/lb this weekend.

Sautee garlic, shallots and some thinly sliced bird chillies, throw in prawns and some cherry tomatoes, smash all the juice out of the tomatoes, toss in some diced preserved lemon and deglaze with white wine, season with salt and pepper, reduce wine down and throw in a shit load of butter. Remove from heat and stir in the butter so it melts in slowly and emulsifies with the tomato juices and wine. Sauce should coat a spoon. Have some toasty bread to mop it up.

-had spotted prawns for dinner last night for the first time this year.

I steamed the prawns in a wok for ten minutes. Then I heated some cooking oil to add the oil in order to cook some scallions. Put the heated cooking oil into a sauce dish along with the scallions. Add soya sauce.

Dipping sauce for the spotted prawns. Delicious! FeelsGoodMan

Obsideon 05-31-2021 06:34 PM

Picked up some Spotties on Saturday, pretty plump this year.
Ate a few sashimi style, then simply boil the rest for 2 min. Heat up olive oil then pour it over thinly sliced serrano peppers and soy sauce. Simple yet delicious dipping sauce.

Made some Seafood Miso soup with a bunch of the heads, scallions and tofu with udon noodles.

G 05-31-2021 10:43 PM

Made some last weekend but when I was boiling, realized they had a lot of gunk/dirt/dark green substance leaking from the heads... I don't recall that happening last year, maybe just poop?

bcedhk 05-31-2021 10:48 PM

Is the hype dying? Went to H mart today and saw a lot in the tank. They were selling it for 18.99 a pound

bcrdukes 06-01-2021 06:00 PM

People can't afford spotted prawns then they're preparing their anus to overpay for GVRD properties well over asking. :troll:

pherio 05-04-2022 04:05 PM

It's that time again. Dailyhive says there's "huge demand" this season. Anyone seen prices yet?

whitev70r 05-04-2022 04:15 PM

^ can't wait, with inflation, Covid tax ... I'm guessing $1000/lb ??!!
