I got mine off Craigslist for $10 awhile ago. But this is exactly what I have.

Anyone ever worry that these car dvrs will make thieves want to break into your car to get them?

Gh0stRider 02-15-2012 10:47 PM

the cameras are removable

!Aznboi128 02-15-2012 10:52 PM

i did worry, but you know what, people might break into your car for no reason too? can't be too much worry. you lock your car, you alarm is on. you did your best already. i got a buddy got break-in couple weeks back, he just lost around 10 dollars change. the thief didn't even bother to take his DVD player and iPod, which is mounted on the dash.

I recently saw some luxury cars (Mercedes and BMW) with dash cams that were integrated quite well into the space between the rearview mirror and the windshield and, imo, appear to be factory options. Anyone aware of auto-makers including dash cams as options?

NLY 02-19-2012 01:45 AM

Does anyone's BlackVue keeps repeating "Blackvue - for your safe driving" over and over randomly?

Mine does that doesn't record properly, as if I'm missing segments in between.

I tried pulling the power and restarting it but it's going the same thing over and over.

^mb try reformating/upgrading firmware?

i turned all the talking and stuff off, found it annoying. havent had any problems with mine really

Are you sure they were dash cam's? Did you see any images?
Chances are it might be one of many many 'camera'/'sensors' mounted on luxury cars now. For example...Mercedes have all those senors and technology that brakes for you if it sense you're too close to the car in front, etc.

^^ are you sure they aren't just night vision cameras?

godwin 02-19-2012 06:01 AM

Because car data system has limited bandwidth. All those cameras have on board processors (the majority is by a company called MobilEye) that already sensed / processed the video image data usually on sensor (since CMOS has plenty of silicon real estate). You can't just try to solder a video out line.

The sensor on the location you talk about, could be night vision or just the rain/light sensor. Most new MY cars that are 50k would have more than 1 camera.. eg lane departure / blind spot sensors are just CMOS camera sensors.

You should put the camera on a bench top power supply or better, power the camera in car on from a separate battery power source to see if you can replicate the problem.. Chances are your wiring is loose and experiencing intermittent voltage drops, causing the camera to restart. It depends on the car, if your car's suspension is hard, I won't use wire taps.. Either find a power source you can screw down, or thermal wire strip a reliable power wire and solder a splice.

I have a GoPro but never mounted it. When I was in Europe last June I gave my buddy the camera to see how it would turn out, quality seemed fine. Now I just have to mount it on my car here (this thread shows that it could be an excellent idea). It snaps on and off, easy to use and is full HD.

Here is the "test" video from when I drove through Wales.

I think that might be the problem, I'm currently using a cigarette lighter splitter for the blackvue and my iPod. The power cable doesn't sit all the way into the splitter opening.

Although, one issue is when power or voltage drops, the blackvue should say "the blackvue is now shutting down." Instead, it seems like it keeps restarting so it doesn't seem like an interminent power issue.

My suspension is pretty stiff as well so the power cable might be jumping around loose, but it's never lost power.

I tried that first and it still continued happening. Looks like I got the defective piece in the batch.

That "BlackVue for your safe driving" gets annoying really fast, doesn't it?

Mine started doing that the other day, so I checked the wiring which was ok. Then I deleted all of the recorded video/gps/voice recordings which didn't make any difference. What did work was going into the settings program with the BlackVue viewer installed and rewrote the settings onto the memory card. It's been working fine for the last couple of days.

I only use the voice as notification that the camera has started recording. How did you rewrite the settings onto the memory card?

Hadn't occured to me that they may be sensors but that's probably the case. Thanks for clarifying :)

TOS'd 02-19-2012 11:43 AM

^ you could probably just delete it and go back into options to redo your settings.

Also it makes sense that your BV doesnt shut off, probably because it loses power but regains it right away, like a skip from the power source. Maybe you should remove the splitter for your ipod and just plug the camera in alone. See if the problem still occurs.

Go to settings and click on Save and Close at the bottom of the screen. Change one setting and let it resave everything again.

It seems that the unit doesn't have the capability of remembering your preferences so it read the memory card everytime it starts. Maybe a file on your memory card was corrupted and causes the problem.
