Weird, I've never tried using the smith machine for bench..
Sometimes I use umm.. I think its called hammer strength or something.
But basically you're just benching the weight, you dont need to stabilize or anything.

Is the smith machine pretty much the same thing?

yeah dude have not used the smith machine in years, but i have been reading articles and some bb dude used it to just get his upper chest built, i don't do bench on it well like i do, i do really wide grip bench and guillotine bench on it, been doing that for the past month and half and i have noticed great improvements in chest like my upper upper like almost neck and were the top of your shoulders meet, i could find i never get that off normal bench or dun bells no matter how i did them . you should try it out

RRxtar 12-23-2009 10:38 AM

sounds like its a smith machine

barbell runs along sliders and has catch points you can rotate the bar to set it on. all you have to do is 100% push instead of focusing on stability as well.

i use it for bench if i dont have a spotter sometimes. and i use it for shoulder presses (in addition to dumbells) all the time. you can also use it as an alternative to squats if you arent comfortable with real squats.

!Yaminashi 12-23-2009 11:09 AM

^I actually see ALOT of ppl use the smith machine for squats at my gym.
Moreso than actual squats. Maybe I'll start using that for now, just in case..

RRxtar 12-23-2009 11:26 AM

ill admit, i use it for squats too.

hal0g0dv2 12-23-2009 11:28 AM

I find I can't get the same feel with tr smith for squats I feel to restricted, then again everyone is diff

I really hope that was a sarcastic comment

!Yaminashi 12-23-2009 02:00 PM

And why's that?

your body is in a fixed position when using a smith machine, your knees are going to be positioned awkwardly, its an unnatural movement

mc25 12-23-2009 07:06 PM

Work, then sick with a cold for the past few days=no gym + lots of rest…. :(

Its funny, I can leg press about 350+lbs, but when I started squats and now I can only do about 90lbs (all with 3 sets of 6-8reps)

yeah weird eh

there are so many dudes at my gym that can do like 6 plates on each side for leg press but when they step to do squats they can barley to 2 plates per side
suckers, i started with squats and barley do leg press

!Yaminashi 12-24-2009 08:30 AM

Honestly I've never done leg press, but I used to do squats alot. Now I think I should lay off. I hate leg days though, they feel like a chore

RRxtar 12-24-2009 12:31 PM

mc25 12-25-2009 01:40 PM

Ya...but it's worth it...
you have to work hard for what you want (not only referring to the legs)

Well, I used to mix my shoulder day in with my back day, but since I did deadlifts yesterday I sorta skipped shoulders :(

I just didnt have the energy for seated military press
