i love this phone :) Getting 10mpbs down in my house with the LTE enabled.. and my area doesnt have LTE or very weak LTE.. cant wait to test more tomo.. $400 for this amazing piece of hardware, now with LTE :D

FerrariEnzo 11-23-2012 02:29 AM

Dont you need an LTE plan to get LTE speeds even if you have LTE enabled on this phone, wouldnt it be using the HSPA+ connection? Im confused here..:ahwow:

Here is the article over at gsm arena for those who already have the N4 :okay:

Seems legit from what I read on xda as well.

Apparently the LTE hardware is functional and left in the nexus 4 but just not enabled by software. It's also apparently missing some sort of 'amplifier' chip for the LTE so the reception will suck vs other 'real' LTE phones (ie. iphone5, htc one X, sgs3, etc.). But regardless, it works and a lot of people have posted clips on YouTube now.

this seems like a legit explanation. i have yet to see a video of the nexus 4 reaching 50 mbps like my S3. but it can easily reach 15+, even 20+. Which I would consider LTE speeds already.......

From the screenshots posted it seems like even with LTE enabled the speeds are still 4G speed though? Or maybe the ones I've seen so far just have poor connections.

Because Rogers use the 4G term quite loosely and they actually have an icon for LTE

S3 for example 4G isn't LTE and when it logs in to LTE network it's labelled as LTE

Actually Rogers is the only company that really advertised 4G as 4G LTE Telus/Bell were advertising 4G as their DC-HSPA+.

That's just the labeling that the phone's ROM uses.

A lot of phones show HSPA+ as 4G, some phones show LTE as 4G, and some phones show LTE as LTE.
The speeds they are getting look like LTE speeds. There's no way you get 10+ Mb/s uploads on HSPA+.

AOSP ROM's will almost always show E/3G/H+/4G. It's the TouchWiz ROM's that show 4G/4GLTE. But yeah the amplifier chip explanation seems reasonable.

Only in the beginning Rogers had "LTE plans". Recently I believe they've upgraded everyone to LTE speeds as long as their SIM card/phone supports it. Telus/Bell on the other hand never had "LTE plans" and just allowed anyone with a data plan + LTE able phone/SIM card to use LTE.

So why did Google lie about the specifications of the Nexus 4? They probably didn’t want to offend people. Imagine the PR blunder that would have resulted if Google went ahead and said Canadians can enjoy LTE, but Americans and Europeans couldn’t. There would have been geeks with pitchforks storming the Mountain View campus.

LTE working fine here :D

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6...s937/photo.jpg

I have a feeling Google will find a way to plug this loophole. Nexus 4 is only FCC certified for HSPA+, and not LTE
Honestly, I've already disabled LTE and went back to HSPA+...it was fun to play with, but if LTE suddenly disappeared, I wouldn't shed any tears over it. It's fast, but not a requirement for what I use my phone for.

c3m 11-23-2012 02:16 PM

^ how was the signal strength since the nexus 4 doesn't have lte amplifier and antenna

FerrariEnzo 11-23-2012 02:21 PM

damn it GOOGLE!! wheres my N4!!

It's not great...2-3 bars?
But I can't say if that's due to hardware, because my brothers Note2 (also on Rogers) has a around 2-3 bars as well. In fact, my LTE speeds were faster than his Note2 by about 5mbps when we tested together.

I don't understand how the LTE hardware works, but I was under the impression those missing amplifiers and antennas were the reason why the Nexus4 only works on Band4 LTE? I don't know if it affects Band4 signal strength.

twitchyzero 11-23-2012 03:28 PM

i think it's extremely impressive google launched a high-spec'd phone for $300
i'm honestly shocked the LTE antenna works...congrats to everyone who upgraded but I think im gonna stick with the galaxy nexus (if I knew there would be LTE I would've jumped ship too...I'm sure GNex resale value has tanked in the last few weeks)

I think this just shows the margins phone manufacturers and carriers make on hardware sales.

But then again, there are rumours that Google is partially subsidizing each phone sold.

DC5-S 11-23-2012 10:17 PM

I get four bars lte signal in van. Got over 50k down 25k up.. Even if Google patches it out in a patch. Developers will always find a way to bring it back.. I compared my phone to the galaxy note 2.. That phone has noticeable lag, and I much prefer the screen on the n4.

Not with Telus. Just need an LTE capable SIM.

I get about the same reception as my iPhone 5 in terms of # of bars in areas with LTE. I don't have LTE at home or work (where I could sit down and actually compare signal strength with actual numbers) so I couldn't really tell you specifically if the signal strength is the same. The Nexus 4 does have the amplifier for LTE but ONLY for Band 4 and none of the others. We're just fortunate enough in Canada to actually use those bands for our LTE implementations.
