Not using any tools. Haven't looked into them yet. Not sure what they do

They help you stagger plots. Without them you can do 3 plots on a 1 TB drive at a time with them you can do 5 because they start at different times.

At the peak in 2017 bitcoin was around 20K. Even if you bought at the peak you would be laughing today.
