Time and again, GMJB finds himself behind the curve. Could've moved Tanev a year or two ago when he was worth a lot. Instead, still have Tanev who is injury prone and looking slow. Same thing with the whole Hamhuis situation...
So, to your question about feeling closer; We have taken a couple steps forward but in reality the team is far far away from even remotely being close to competitive in the playoffs. This rebuild is taking a lot longer than expected and I attribute that to this "half-assed" approach of not embracing a full on aggressive rebuild by weaponizing cap space, and trading away assets for picks when possible. | As mentioned, we're 5 years into the rebuild and here's the kicker:
Our top 2 dmen are, without a doubt, players from the Gillis era (Edler, Tanev). 3 of our top 4 dmen are players from the Gillis era (depending on whether or not you rank Hutton ahead of Stecher).
The dmen that Benning & Co. have brought in are: - Stecher, Troy
- Sbisa, Luca
- Gudbranson, Erik
- Pouliot, Derrick
- Del Zotto, Michael
- Bartkowski, Matt
- Tryamkin, Nikita
- Larsen, Philip
- Clendening, Adam
- Pedan, Andrey
- Sautner, Ashton
- Fedun, Taylor
- Brisebois, Guillaume
- Holm, Philip
The list of Gillis-era dmen inherited by Benning: - Edler, Alexander
- Tanev, Christopher
- Hutton, Ben
- Hamhuis, Dan
- Biega, Alex
- Weber, Yannick
- Bieksa, Kevin
- Stanton, Ryan
- Corrado, Frank
- McEneny, Evan
- Garrison, Jason
Like, it's actually nuts to think a top 6 of Gillis dmen 5 years removed and most of them well into their 30s is easily better than the top 6 of 14 Benning acquisitions on the back end.
Aside from Stecher and Tryamkin, every Benning dman has been awful.
Tryamkin-Stecher
Sbisa-Gudbranson
Del Zotto-Clendening
vs.
Edler-Tanev
Hutton-Weber
Hamhuis-Biega
Which begs the question: how bad is this team if Benning had traded Edler, Tanev, and Hutton last year like many were clamouring for last season? I truly believe it would be absolutely unwatchable.
Update: Canucks w/ and w/o Edler
w/ Edler: 20-14-4 (95-point pace)
w/o Edler: 6-14-4 (55-point pace) |
