Time and again, GMJB finds himself behind the curve. Could've moved Tanev a year or two ago when he was worth a lot. Instead, still have Tanev who is injury prone and looking slow. Same thing with the whole Hamhuis situation...

So, to your question about feeling closer; We have taken a couple steps forward but in reality the team is far far away from even remotely being close to competitive in the playoffs. This rebuild is taking a lot longer than expected and I attribute that to this "half-assed" approach of not embracing a full on aggressive rebuild by weaponizing cap space, and trading away assets for picks when possible.

As mentioned, we're 5 years into the rebuild and here's the kicker:

Our top 2 dmen are, without a doubt, players from the Gillis era (Edler, Tanev). 3 of our top 4 dmen are players from the Gillis era (depending on whether or not you rank Hutton ahead of Stecher).

The dmen that Benning & Co. have brought in are:
  • Stecher, Troy
  • Sbisa, Luca
  • Gudbranson, Erik
  • Pouliot, Derrick
  • Del Zotto, Michael
  • Bartkowski, Matt
  • Tryamkin, Nikita
  • Larsen, Philip
  • Clendening, Adam
  • Pedan, Andrey
  • Sautner, Ashton
  • Fedun, Taylor
  • Brisebois, Guillaume
  • Holm, Philip

The list of Gillis-era dmen inherited by Benning:
  • Edler, Alexander
  • Tanev, Christopher
  • Hutton, Ben
  • Hamhuis, Dan
  • Biega, Alex
  • Weber, Yannick
  • Bieksa, Kevin
  • Stanton, Ryan
  • Corrado, Frank
  • McEneny, Evan
  • Garrison, Jason

Like, it's actually nuts to think a top 6 of Gillis dmen 5 years removed and most of them well into their 30s is easily better than the top 6 of 14 Benning acquisitions on the back end.

Aside from Stecher and Tryamkin, every Benning dman has been awful.

Tryamkin-Stecher
Sbisa-Gudbranson
Del Zotto-Clendening

vs.

Edler-Tanev
Hutton-Weber
Hamhuis-Biega

Which begs the question: how bad is this team if Benning had traded Edler, Tanev, and Hutton last year like many were clamouring for last season? I truly believe it would be absolutely unwatchable.

Update: Canucks w/ and w/o Edler
w/ Edler: 20-14-4 (95-point pace)
w/o Edler: 6-14-4 (55-point pace)

Yesss, successful TDL for GMJB if that's all he does.

Speed2K 02-25-2019 11:54 AM

Jonathan Dahlen is gone (to the sharks for Linus Karlsson), but I wish he could've had a chance to play with Petey.

I'll hold my arm chair GM comments because really I don't know shit about who Linus Karlsson is and as for Dahlen I would have loved to see him play, there was always some hype about him being a potential scorer for us and in the AHL after a slow start he was really heating up points wise. With that said, no idea how the rest of his game was so we'll see.

On the other hand I'm so glad we got rid of Gudy. He can't play D, he can't provide offence, he's a big guy and has some leadership apparently which is great but can we not find someone who can't play hockey who's big and has some leadership for cheaper?

Expresso 02-25-2019 12:14 PM

haha at least he's honest.

@TSN1040
Gudbranson on time in Vancouver: Honestly, I'm not too proud of it. I don't think I played very well. I worked hard every single day, came to the rink and tried to get it together.

per Botchford:

Quote:

I do think the Canucks have been concerned about Dahlen’s focus and commitment and the team was disappointed with how he showed in training camp because of fitness issues.

But this isn’t just a fitness level thing like it was for Hutton and Juolevi.

I used to hear similar things about Hunter Shinkaruk.

So it doesn’t surprise me the Canucks are exploring the possibility of selling off their Dahlen shares.

I know a lot of people are going to say the Canucks would be selling low, but Dahlen still has pedigree and it will really erode if he doesn’t take a step up in production next season.

Dahlen and another asset could bring in something valuable.

I’m not against the idea of trading him if you can find the right return but I’d lean toward working with him here. He’s shown more than enough already playing on a line in Sweden with Pettersson that it’s worth exploring in the NHL.

Karlsson D+1 in Allsvenskan: 17 points in 48 games
Dahlen D+1 in Allsvenskan: 44 points in 45 games

roastpuff 02-25-2019 12:45 PM

Dahlen has really looked bad 5v5 in the AHL though. He relies on PP to get his goals. Very slow footspeed at all, and doesn't seem motivated.

Damn..i don't follow much but is that when him and pettersson played together?

either way.. we'll just have to trust Benning on this one.. he has been pretty good with our drafting/scouting haha.. afterall, we got this one for Burrows :P

Yes

Pettersson had 41 in 43 that year (draft year)

Literally every prospect except Juolevi and MacEwen has struggled under Cull. Palmu bailed for Europe, Dahlen asked for a trade. Doesn’t seem to be the relatively-prosperous environment that it was under Green.

68style 02-25-2019 02:53 PM

Why can’t we get a draft pick for Guddy... man do we really need any more of these 3rd or 4th line wingers?!?! We have like 3 teams worth of these type of guys.

Just be thankful he's gone!

highfive 02-25-2019 03:17 PM

I'm surprised we're able to unload Guddy and not be a lower round pick.

Pearson might get us more down the road if he end up getting traded.

Dahlen was disappointing that he wanted out. Like wtf happened to cole cassels, still remember linden's season ticketholder event responding to what are we going to do when we face mcdavid, he goes we have cole cassels. lol

With Gudbrandson out, I have a feeling Benning is going to try to sign Myers this summer. He's another player Benning got a hard on for.

Jmac 02-25-2019 04:03 PM

Cassels had his career derailed by injuries.

Re: Dahlen trade

RRxtar 02-25-2019 04:09 PM

can someone do a 'where are they now' with all of the controversial moves JB has made? it seems like alot of the guys that fans talked about like we're talking about dahlen right now, ended up as busts or we're ahead in the deal now.

Acurapinoy 02-25-2019 05:31 PM

Let’s just all be happy JB got us Petey,Brock,Hughes,Demko,Virtanen,Juolevi,Dipietro pool
and was able to trade burrows for any prospect haha. Now can we land Jack Hughes somehow lol

spoon.ek9 02-25-2019 08:39 PM

woo! finally a good, regulation win. can't believe that's our first shutout of the season...?
