Was Gillis supposed to not trade for depth for upcoming playoff runs?

Benning has somehow managed to never come into a draft with more than 7 picks despite finishing in the bottom 3 in 3 of his 4 seasons, but Gillis bled draft picks ... yeah, okay ...

I'm not saying that Gillis was a bad GM. I'm saying that a lot the building blocks were already there when he came in. He did a lot to attract some excellent players leading to the 2011 run and along with Gilman was a god damn wizard for contracts but also the Luongo fiasco.

I'll be the first to say that the Benning/Linden duo messed up royally with this "rebuild on the fly" BS. I was howling from the get go that a true rebuild needed to take place. Whether this was Aquaman behind the scenes, I don't know. At the end of the day, it appears we finally have the green light to go ahead with a rebuild in its purest form.

Padawan GM (Dubas) outduels Master GM (Lamorello).

Anyone thinks this puts the Leafs into a higher echelon? Maybe advance to 2ND round and lose instead of losing in the first? I don't think this catapults them into like top 4 teams level ... they still have Gardiner on D.

So we paid Baertschi almost $2 million more than Riley Nash over the same term? Why?

JesseBlue 07-01-2018 10:18 PM

Maybe because he didn't want to go here

invader 07-01-2018 11:16 PM

Well then...

I've checked out of next season.

Tim Budong 07-02-2018 05:35 AM

James Neal to Calgary
5.75m AAV for 5 years

That’s inconsequential, Baertschi isn’t worth $2 mill more than Riley Nash over 3 years... our salaries for our players are inflated over that of other teams with similar or better players

JesseBlue 07-02-2018 08:25 AM

Well I think you should apply to become a gm.

While we sit on this side thinking it's that easy, we are in for a rude awakening.

How do we know Nash didn't request for a 4 year deal if he signed with the Canucks?

At the very least, Baertschi wanted to be here and it was good that he was paid fairly. After all, gas prices and house prices are also over inflated

mj_39 07-02-2018 09:52 AM

What some of you fail to understand is that the majority of valuable players available during free agency have multiple offers. Why would a player want to come play for the Canucks if they have an offer to play with a much better team? Term and salary are all we can offer to obtain a player over another team... Do I like everything about the moves we made? Nope... Did we give out too much term? Yes... Do these moves fulfill a gap that the Canucks don't have with their current roster/prospects? Yes...

Our penalty kill was not very good last year and we had no grit. Our younger guys are going to need the space and time to succeed in this league. Last thing you want is for our younger guys to be treated like rag-dolls... You can all say what you want about the league transitioning to speed and skill over size, however you can't ice a bunch of smaller rookies and expect success. It just wont happen.

Over payment is inevitable in one way or another when you don't have a great team.

Wait...you're telling me that being a real GM isn't like NHL 18 where I can force a CPU trade?! PogChamp

So ... don't sign them ... sign guys on the secondary market/out of training camp to shorter-term, lower-priced deals.

yea.. because the same people won't be complaining about those

Hondaracer 07-02-2018 08:24 PM

It’s better to pay MORE in the short term than less on the long. 4 years is insane and it’s already bit us hard a few times. The term is the biggest issue and could have huge ramifications going forward

JesseBlue 07-02-2018 11:06 PM

Have faith in the system just like how people didn't think Vegas would do anything last season

whitev70r 07-03-2018 06:42 AM

Leafs sign Subban ... Jordan from the LA Kings.

68style 07-03-2018 08:46 AM

^ He can make a club with Corrado as a jilted Canucks prospect who probably won’t hack it with the Leafs either

Bouncing Bettys 07-03-2018 11:43 AM

Does PK want to follow the trend and come home, now that his brother is in the system? :)

He still got 5 years left on his contract?

Bouncing Bettys 07-03-2018 12:29 PM

Speaking of which, Yakupov to the KHL, what a bust.

Lol what would leafs offer that Nashville would want?

Can’t believe Ottawa is going to trade Karlsson. If they suck next year, pick is going to benefit Colorado. Lol

Kinda said vanek won't be back. I know he wanted to play with the Sedins but he and brock had some serious chemistry.

Ch28 07-06-2018 07:58 AM
