off topic, but why does the news media keep pronouncing Huawei as Wah Wei? As a sometime Mandarin speaker, isn't it hwah wei?

Did you read the article above about how much that would cost? Ain’t gonna happen.

I don't think it's about money.

I wouldn't want our gov't, telecom or anyone for that matter to have this kind of spying capability on me or any other person.

Privacy is a privilege, including many other privileges we often take for granted, that many before us fought with their lives for. And it should be something that we keep for our children and generation to come.

Cost should be considered in many areas, but not basic human rights like privacy.

I'd say the situation has been evolving since it came up, and as a result, I'm sure her plans have changed significantly as well. With as much (international) attention as it has garnered now, perhaps she / China is now deeming that it has become more important for her to remain in Canada and comply with the court order (for the moment).

I remember reading a piece of news shortly after her bail release saying that shortly after Meng got home, a vehicle wearing a diplomatic plate has shown up at her residence.

You can tell 100% that the Chinese state is very much involved with this. If they deem she needs to get out of Canada at any point while she is still here, I'm sure they can find a way to do so.

1) This video adds to the mis pronunciation, it's from the company itself.
2) Native mandarin speakers can hear the sound of hwah, but non native speakers cannot hear the difference. It's something learned as a infant or early years of language learning.
3) It could just be that the media can't pronounce it and butcher it anyways.

CivicBlues 12-17-2018 03:17 PM

^Yeah that video came up for me as well. 'Muricans amirite? :D Can't even pronounce a simple yogurt company's name so they needed to change the spelling just for them.

Also found this on Wikipedia, looks like the company is actively trying to get it pronounced wah wei as sort of a close enough compromise.

The name Huawei may be translated as "splendid act" or "China is able"; Hua can mean "splendid" or "China", while wei can mean "action" or "achievement".[21] In Chinese pinyin, it is Huáwéi,[22] and close in pronunciation to "Hwa Way" in Standard Chinese. However, pronunciation of Huawei by non-Chinese varies in other countries, for example "Hua Way" or "How Wee" in the United States and "Hoe-ah-wei" in the Netherlands.[21] The company had considered changing the name in English as it was concerned that non-Chinese may find the name hard to pronounce,[23] but decided to keep the name, and launched a name recognition campaign instead to encourage a pronunciation closer to "Wah-Way" using the words "Wow Way".[24][25]

If she bail it will pretty seal Huawei's fate in the western world. Not to mention it will sure get a lot of people wanting to remove Huawei hardware telecommunication or even ban Huawei phone sales in Canada as a result.

Come to think of it, I have a coworker with the last name Huang. All the white people in my office pronounce it as “Wang” which I find odd. Same thing on the TV show Fresh Off the Boat where the family name is also Huang. Everyone on the show pronounces it like Wang.

that's just a contraction though and it's a distinct 2 syllables, i guess 'hua' is also 2 syllables in pinyin/bopomofo but it's a continuous tone

as a native mandarin speaker it's just kinda wired into the noggins and tongue as you have to use it to say flower, language, sino, slippery etc.

One of my earliest memories is my dad teaching me to count,
"One two free"
Then I repeated "One two free"
The he says "No it's free"
I repeat "Free"
.......

A lot of the time you can't even hear the different sounds in other languages and sometimes you can even hear the difference and not be able to make the sound

In Europe, specifically Finland there seems to be no words with the strong Y vowel sound

So my name is Tyler, growing up I was always around older finish people because my grandparents were part of a large outdoors/hunting and fishing group consisting almost entirely of finish people

I have trophies from events that say “Taylor” and I was almost exclusively known as Taylor as there isn’t that Ty sound in the vocabulary seemingly lol..kinda weird

And a 3rd Canadian is detained in China. If it is still not obvious, this is the country that China is, and this is exactly how she operates.

lol @ making the fun of the appearance of Canada's leader... Not that I'm into making fun of the way people look, but out of the other countries mentioned in this thread, I'd say we come out looking the best LUL

twitchyzero 12-20-2018 05:03 AM

Canada only throws a tantrum when Russia does something completely unrelated to us

but we will continue taking it up the butt when it comes to Saudi Arabia and China because we need their dirty money
